Bible Note: Greetings CDBJ! I haven't read all of this thread, so forgive me if I repeat something which has already been said. Many translations of Ex. 21:22 use the term 'miscarriage' to translate the Hebrew terms. However, this is a major leap in logic. The Hebrew literally says, "so that her fruit comes forth without mischief". There isn't any indication in this verse that the 'fruit' died or was miscarried. The best choice seems to be to take the phrase to mean that the baby is born prematurely, yet without harm to the baby or the mother. This also makes better sense of the passage. An accident which causes a premature birth only results in a fine. However, if either mother or baby are harmed, then it is to be 'eye for eye'...'life for life'. This is a very strong passage demonstrating the value of even the unborn human life. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
