Bible Question: In Genesis we learn in Chapter 5 and 6 the life line of many different people. The longer living person I think live over 900 years. Where in the Bible does it talk about GOD cutting down those years for us where we will only live three scores? |
Bible Answer: A warm hello, escottl: According to Genesis 5:29, Methuselah lived 969 years, making him the oldest person recorded in Scripture. I am not aware of any mention in Scripture of God's decreasing the lifespan to three score, or 60, years; but biblical records suggest that antediluvian folks had longer lifespans than the descendents of Noah's family afterward. Job 14:1 says that "Man, who is born of woman, is short-lived and full of turmoil." But no specfic number of years is mentioned. The Fifth Commandment says, "Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the Lord your God gives you." (Exodus 20:12). Again, no mention of any specific number of days. Genesis 6:3 says, "My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, because he also is flesh; nevertheless his days shall be one hundred and twenty years." But the context leans solidly toward the exegesis that the passage is saying that God would give man 120 years before the judgment of the Flood would fall, and therefore it is highly unlikely that this passage has anything whatever to do with human lifespan. --Hank |
