AMPLIFIED 2015 | Genesis 3:22 ¶ And the LORD God said, "Behold, the man has become like one of Us (Father, Son, Holy Spirit), knowing [how to distinguish between] good and evil; and now, he might stretch out his hand, and take from the tree of life as well, and eat [its fruit], and live [in this fallen, sinful condition] forever"-- |
Bible Question:
Hi, Ed, Which one is it? Does sin result in physical death, or does sin not result in physical death? The curse for disobedience was death of the whole man, both spiritual (which occurred first) and physical (which occurred later). The gap between the beginning and end of death is not as important as that it included the whole man, body and soul. The order is the same in salvation. The relationship is restored first (the spiritual, the soul). The incorruptible body is resurrected later. So, everlasting life includes the whole man, body and soul. The death is total, and the life He gives is to the whole man also. God is not Platonic such that he is only concerned about the soul (I'm not saying that you're saying this.) He created Man body and soul; He will redeem man through Christ body and soul. |
Bible Answer: Lionstrong You jumped in here in the middle have you read the beginning of this thread? This thread begins with a discussion on the Tree of Life and its purpose. It was concluded that evidently man did not possess eternal life but needed to eat from the tree of life to sustain life. That may or may not be a valid assumption but I believe it is valid, why else the tree of life? Also Revelations chapter 19 infers that the tree of life will once again be available to man and it produces different fruit monthly again an indication that man must continually eat of it. What took place in the garden. First God warned Adam do not eat of the tree of good and evil or you will die Gen. 2:17. Unless Adam had an understanding of death the threat of death to Adam would have no meaning. That opens speculation that Adam may have seen death before. Maybe not, but let’s move on. Gen. 3:1-5 Satan then comes into the garden in the form of a serpent and tempts Eve with 3 things; lust of the eye, lust of the flesh, and pride of life. All of which Eve sees being satisfied in the forbidden fruit Gen 3:6a. So she takes and eats, does not die before Adam so he eats Gen3:6b. What transpired? Adam and Eve had once walked with God and were in perfect relationship with Him. Now all of the sudden they are afraid, ashamed and hiding. They had broken relationship with God and were dead spiritually. God had warned them they would die and die they did, instantly at this point. Now look at the curse of sin Gen. 3:14-20 nothing about death except Gen 3:19 which says rather expectedly, you will work until you die. Almost as if Adam accepted death to be a natural conclusion to life. Now look at God’s words in Gen 3:22 If man stays in the garden and around this tree of life and eats of it he will live forever he must be put out. And man was thrown out of the garden. We do not know Adam’s age at this time so we don’t know how long he lived after this just that he lived until the age of 930 years. From this I think we have to ask. 1. What was the purpose of the tree of life? Evidently to sustain life. 2. What occurred after they ate in the garden? They die spiritually. 3. Was death mentioned in the curse Gen 3:14-20? No just in passing. :-) (no pun intended) 4. What would have prevented physical death? Evidently the Tree of Life. 5. Do we believe the Tree of Life could remove the curse of sin? No only Jesus the Lamb of God could do that. 6. Has everyone sinned? Yes Romans 3:23 7. Has everyone died physically? No Enoch and Elijah have not. 8. Did the curse of sin carry physical death? No it carried spiritual death, physical death resulted because men no longer had access to the Tree of Life. 9. What did Jesus’ death on the cross do? Removed the curse of sin. Gospels 10. What main thing took place? We became alive spiritually once again, we had relationship with the father. Gal 3:29 11. Did Jesus’ death on the cross prevent man from physically dying? No Heb. 9:27 12. What keeps man alive eternally? Evidently the Tree of Life Rev 19 For these twelve reasons I believe sin did not cause physical death but rather physical death resulted because sin separated man from God and the Tree of Life. To me this verse says it all! Romans 8:5 For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. |
