81 | I don't understand how we can interpret | Matt 2:23 | newoldstock | 95302
I just researched this topic further and found The following notes from The Blue Letter Bible, David Guzik Commentary Study Notes: a. The phrase He shall be called a Nazarene is not a Biblically recorded prophecy, but probably just a well known rabbinic prophecy or interpretation b. Since to be a Nazarene was a special mark of holiness, it seemed natural that the Messiah would be a Nazarene; but Matthew shows how this was true in a different way - He was from the city of Nazareth, though not a Nazarene through a vow c. Remember that Nazareth was a city that did not have a particularly good reputation (John 1:46); yet the Father did not feel it necessary to have Jesus come from a "good" city |

82 | I don't understand how we can interpret | Matt 2:23 | newoldstock | 95291
Ray, thanks. I agree with you about (Rod) and (He). I am convinced that Isaiah is prophesying about Jesus the Messiah. I don't understand how we can interpret that (branch) is (Nazarene). It almost seems like biblical scholars came up with this reference verse to make something fit when they could not find a direct match. God Bless. Jim
83 | Even if the root word is branch, how did | Matt 2:23 | newoldstock | 95268
Thanks Emmaus. Amplified says in brackets "branch or Separated One". I think that separated one would be Nazarite. Such as one who has taken a Nazarite vow.I appreciate your help, but to me it looks like the commentators are really reaching out on a "thin branch" for this one. Even if the root word is branch, how did Matthew get "He shall be called a Nazarene" from "then a shoot will spring from the stem of Jesse,And a branch from his roots will bear fruit."? Perhaps this quote is from a book that is missing or didn't make it into the Cannon. Jim
84 | "He shall be called a Nazarene."? | Matt 2:23 | newoldstock | 95216
I am doing a detailed bible study of Matthew and can not find a reference in the Old Testament for "He shall be called a Nazarene." The Amplified I notice says the ref. is Isa. 11:1 Then a shoot will spring from the stem of Jesse,And a branch from his roots will bear fruit. I don't see how it can be the proper reference. I can't see how I could pull "He shall ge called a Nazanene" from Isa. 11:1. Do you know of any other reference?
85 | How Firm a Foundation | Prov 10:25 | newoldstock | 94537
This is indeed a grand old hymm. I haven't heard it in a longtime as I am in a "praise and worship" church now. Luke 6:48 "he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid a foundation on the rock; and when a flood occurred, the torrent burst against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built."
86 | God helps those who help themselves? | 2 Thess 3:10 | newoldstock | 94041
I've always kind of liked this verse, but it is not an exact match to the old saying that you quoted. Your saying, I believe, is not a quote from the bible.
87 | Did Adam and Eve go to heaven? | Gen 1:1 | newoldstock | 93759
I don't think that we can know for sure. I don't recall any bible verse evidence of this, but they sinned and died prior to the Law and to the New Covenant in Christ Jesus. So by what standard were they judged. God punished them, but then clothed them. I think that God forgave them and they are most likely in heaven waiting to greet your class of girls when they eventually go to heaven. God Bless, Jim.

Pastor Glenn, thanks very much for your well thought biblical answer. God Bless, Jim
94 | How do we discipline church members? | 1 Cor 5:12 | newoldstock | 93482
Couldn't holding Christians accountable for their actions and disciplining for these actions create gossip and backbiting amoungst the congregation? It was not the case in this situation, but suppose that the Deacon was a spouse abuser or worse and the man she moved in with was a relative or an old family friend. Well-meaning members could bring an indescretion to the attention of the pastor every day.
95 | Effect on a "Seekers" service? | 1 Cor 5:12 | newoldstock | 93473
Seekers are both new baby Christians and those that are being drawn by the Holy Spirit toward Christ. The latter are interested and curious, but may not have truly accepted the Lord in their heart as Saviour and Lord yet. The objective is to evangelize and gently bring them to salvation.

98 | Effect on a "Seekers" service? | 1 Cor 5:12 | newoldstock | 93429
Makarios, perhaps you are aware that Bill Hybles and the Willowcreek Church have what is called a "Seeker" service and have a "Followers" service on Wed. evenings. Might not many of the "Seekers" still be "living in sin"? My guess is that several of the "seekers" in this church are living together and not married. What effect would this scene have on them? Would it drive "Seekers" away from the Church, before they become born again "Followers"? I am not disagreeing with you. These questions have been asked of me concerning this situation. |

99 | What is the meaning of Matthew 11:12? | Matt 11:12 | newoldstock | 93400
Hank, I just checked Luke 16:16. Your answer makes sense when viewing both scriptures and looking at the context of prior and following verses. The "inductive" method of Bible study does indeed work. Thanks, Jim.
100 | How do we discipline church members? | Not Specified | newoldstock | 93397
This question is concerning a true event that was recently related to me and is not hypothetical. A woman told her husband, a church deacon, that she could not longer stand being married to him. She moved out and within two weeks moved in with another man. She continued to attend the church with the new boy friend. The pastor spoke to her about the unappropriateness of her continuing to attend church under the circumstances. She replied that she loved the church and the congregants and had no intention of leaving their fellowship. The minister next visited her with several other deacons to discuss the situation, but she still continued to attend services with her new man. Finally, the minister brought the situation up in a church service attended by the woman and the man, and she ran out the door in tears and never returned. These are the only details that I know. Was this the correct way to handle this? How would your congregation have handled it?
