61 | Do you have any internet links? | Bible general Archive 2 | newoldstock | 98140
Ed, thanks for your detailed answer. Do you have any internet links where I could go to read about this Zondervan debacle? I heard a little about it several years back, but I am not real familiar with it.
62 | Which publish for profit ? | Bible general Archive 2 | newoldstock | 98139
Thanks for your answer and thanks for a reminder of Rom 14:3: The one who eats is not to regard with contempt the one who does not eat, and the one who does not eat is not to judge the one who eats, for God has accepted him.

Dear Ed, a teacher is there to teach not alienate. Not to make baby Christians and Seekers feel bad about their choice of a Bible. Most of my classes are for beginners not seasoned forumers. I am there to teach God's word and not Bible marketing and publisher motivations.
64 | Which publish for profit ? | Bible general Archive 2 | newoldstock | 98108
Ed, you bring up an interesting point. Which bible publishers publish for profit and which ones are not for profit? Which Bibles are published for marketability and sales and which ones for advancing God's Kingdom? How is the average "pew potato" to know which to purchase? BTW Most "Christian" book stores in my neck of the woods push the NIV. If you walk in one and are baffled by the cornicopia of bible assortments, most suggest the NIV. I have seen this happen many times. The NIV is now the best selling version followed by the King James. Does this indicate that most Christians do not know about the Zondervan promise or that they don't care? Is perhaps the product is more important than the publisher?

Nolan, I too think that the ESV is one of the best, if not the best new version. The only reason that I may stick with the NIV is to teach bible studies at my church. I have found that about 70 to 75 percent of the people in most of the classes that I teach use the NIV. It is much easier if I use the same bible that most of the class owns.
66 | Amen Hank. I have 33 bibles | Bible general Archive 2 | newoldstock | 97981
Amen Hank. I have 33 bibles (just counted them) and 5 commentaries, dictionaries, and concordances. I think that I often get so wrapped up in what is the best translation to study that I defeat my purpose and don't study enough. Instead I'm reading books like The King James Version Debate, New Age Versions, The Translation Debate, and The Complete Guide to Bible Versions. I'm addicted to finding the right version when I should be reading A Bible! The best Bible is Read! I have not read the HCSB, but as you can see by my exasperation, I probably will. I have only heard the rummor of a new NKJV here on this forum. Let's sell all of the Books that we don't use regularly and set up a StudyBible Forum Group cruise! Jim
67 | Informed opinions of the ESV please? | Bible general Archive 2 | newoldstock | 97927
Hank, I find the ESV more readable than the NKJV and just as readable, but more literal at the same time than the NIV. The English, especially the prose seems to flow better. The texts used for the ESV are the latest in scholarship and it uses the Masoretic text for the for the old testament. The NKJV uses the Bysintine text (TR) and the text used in the NIV is also somewhat dated now. I like the more formal equivalence better than the dynamic equivalence (NIV) method of translation for a bible to study.

What are your informed opinions of the ESV now that you have had more opportunity to read and asess it? I have been using it lately after reading searched posts by the folks of this forum. I thank you for pointing me to it. I am very pleased with this translation. I never thought that I would move from the NKJ and the NIV, but the ESV is winning me over.

72 | Is Seth really the third child? | Gen 5:4 | newoldstock | 96287
The bible only mentions these three boys by name. The girls were not mentioned. Seth could have been the third boy, but there could have been many daughters between these 3 sons that God did not choose to mention.

74 | Were not all Jews of Jesus's time either | Bible general Archive 2 | newoldstock | 96267
Radioman2, I also was curious about "tectons" and this is what I found in Vine's Expositors: Greek: tekton denotes any craftsman, but especially a worker in wood, a carpenter. |

75 | Were not all Jews of Jesus's time either | Bible general Archive 2 | newoldstock | 96233
Godman, were not all Jews of Jesus's time either Pharisee or Saducee? The Pharisees believed in resurection but the Saducees did not. I believe that Jesus was probably raised as a Pharisee. The wealthiest class was the Saducees. See EdB's answer to my question. Jesus mainly disagreed with the Pharisees interpretation of the law.

79 | What can we learn from the Methodists? | 1 Cor 3:22 | newoldstock | 95812

How to build a 13 million dollar church. How to entertain the masses. Introduction to Christian Universalism. Good: How to be saved and know it. Methodist Men's, women's and couples retreats are spiritual life changing adventures. Methodist ministers from Asbury are top notch. Good hierarchy ruling system. |

80 | Ogran donation? | Mark 12:31 | newoldstock | 95316
There is no specific verse that I know of that would directly address organ donation, but this one works for me. Mark 12:31 "The second is this, 'YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.' There is no other commandment greater than these."
