81 | True Disciples - eternal importance | Luke 14:26 | newoldstock | 101392
How come none of you that are bible scholars can answer Seeker's questions concerning this post and Mark 16:17,18? I am also very interested in your answers to his questions, BUT no one is answering his questions! You are all witnessing to him and suggesting that he email you on the side. This is a "study bible forum". Let's help him right here on the forum! How many others than him might you help with God glorifying answers? I am embarrassed for this forum for this chain. I would answer myself, if I could, but I do not know the answer to questions; and I am most definitely saved. He makes good points.
82 | True Disciples - eternal importance | Luke 14:26 | newoldstock | 101464
Dear Aixen, the NASB puts Mark 9-20 in brackets and both it and the NIV note that "the earliest manuscripts and some other ancient witnesses do not have Mark 16:9-20". I usually use the NKJV or the KJ and did not notice this before. I am also not so sure that the context limits these verses just to the 12 Apostles and their converts. Just so that all of you understand me, however, I do believe and have faith in the Bible as the Word of God. But mainly we must have faith in Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord. Thanks for your answers. God Bless. Jim
83 | Children in Hell | Luke 16:22 | newoldstock | 92219
The Canaanites were a wicked people. God sometimes used one nation to punish another nation. God also did not want cross-marriage and religious contamination of his chosen people. The dead prior to Jesus's ascension all went to Sheol. Part of it was Abraham's bosom and the other part was Hades.
84 | More Questions | Luke 16:22 | newoldstock | 92237
There is no mention of an "age of accountability" in Scripture. My own personal feeling is that the sins of a child are not on the same level and motivation of those of an adult. God is Love! I'll leave the children question up to Him. Lengthy discussion would be human conjecture. To find out more about Sheol and Hades and Hell enter Sheol into the "quick search" box at the upper right of the screen. It has been well covered on this fine site. I would assume that those before Abraham were in Sheol until Jesus released them during his body's 3 days in the tomb. Perhaps someone else could answer this for both of us. God Bless, Jim. |

85 | Effect of Christian Universalism ? | John 14:6 | newoldstock | 92068
How do you feel about what I would call Christian Universalism creeping into the Mainline denominations? One year ago I left the UMC that I had been a member of for 20 years. The main reason was because both senior and associate pastors believed that everyone will go to heaven. What do you think. 1st. post.
86 | Effect of Christian Universalism ? | John 14:6 | newoldstock | 92105
Thanks Hank. It is good to know that others have experienced this. This is a church of about 1700 average attendence,BTW. I have run into at least 5 or 6 pastors in my area that feel the same way about universal salvation. They believe that God is all Love and not judgemental. They believe that we have a "second chance" as a soul after death and that everyone is in the Lamb's Book of Life. They tell me that they learned and came to this point of view in Seminary. They do believe that we all come to God through Christ, but all of us come. I have personally run into this mainly in the Methodist and Presbyterian Church. They tell me that I look at salvation from man's point of view and they look from God's point of view.
87 | Are there other ways to salvation ? | John 14:6 | newoldstock | 107953
Are there any ways to salvation other than a personal relationship with Jesus Christ? This question keeps coming up in every church that I have attended. What about babies who die young, aborted babies, aborigines, remote pygmies in Africa, Godly Jewish folks, good Muslims, and so on and so on add infinitum? Help me with this. How do I answer grieving parents and Christ seekers? |

88 | How about the other sheep | John 14:6 | newoldstock | 107971
How about the other sheep that I mentioned in the question? If you were born in a Muslim or Jewish or Budist country, it is likely you will be one! In some cases you would be killed, etc. if you didn't follow Mom and Dad's religion. How about them? Hell for eternity?
89 | Is 'laying on of hands' necessary? | Acts 8:17 | newoldstock | 183419
12 But when they believed Philip, as he proclaimed the good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized. (A) 13 Then even Simon himself believed. And after he was baptized, he went around constantly with [a] Philip and was astounded as he observed the signs and great miracles (B) that were being performed. 14 When the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had welcomed God's message, they sent Peter and John to them. (C) 15 After they went down there, they prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Spirit. 16 For He had not yet come down on [b] any of them; they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. (D) 17 Then Peter and John laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. The Samaritans believed in the Gospel and in Jesus Christ. They were baptized 'only in the name of the Lord Jesus'. Isn't that enough? Why only when hands were laid on them did they receive the Holy Spirit? Is this applicable today? Thanks, Jim. |

90 | Acts 10:39 "Tree or cross"? | Acts 10:39 | newoldstock | 192045
Hi, God's blessing to you. According to Roman historians, the Romans used a wooden cross made from a tree to execute those who committed crimes against Rome. It was also a practise to hang dead bodies of those killed in battle or for heresy against a ruler from trees and let them be picked over by the vultures as a deterent to others to not follow their example.
91 | Where is it written that Jesus said it? | Acts 10:46 | newoldstock | 101814
How about the "Great Commission"? Does this work? Matt 28:18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Matt 28:19 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, Matt 28:20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Acts 1:8 but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth." |

94 | difference between salvation and sonship | Rom 8:16 | newoldstock | 101057
Can someone explain to us the difference between salvation and sonship that Ken Hepting keeps mentioning?
95 | Baptized in whose name before Matt 28? | Rom 10:9 | newoldstock | 102759
If they met the criterion of Rom 10:9-10, they are now with Jesus even if they weren't baptized. Rom 10:9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; Rom 10:10 for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.
96 | Is | Rom 10:9 | newoldstock | 104769
This is your answer. This is what is required to be saved. However Jesus was fully man and fully God. Gnostics believed He was Sprit and not fully man. God Bless. Jim Rom 10:9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; Rom 10:10 for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation. Rom 10:11 For the Scripture says, "WHOEVER BELIEVES IN HIM WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED." Rom 10:12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, abounding in riches for all who call on Him; Rom 10:13 for "WHOEVER WILL CALL ON THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED." |

97 | What can we learn from the Methodists? | 1 Cor 3:22 | newoldstock | 95812
What I learned: Bad: To agree to disagree. Committees can be very self-centered and politically motivated. How to run a large social club. How to run a large business. How to build a 13 million dollar church. How to entertain the masses. Introduction to Christian Universalism. Good: How to be saved and know it. Methodist Men's, women's and couples retreats are spiritual life changing adventures. Methodist ministers from Asbury are top notch. Good hierarchy ruling system. |

98 | How do we discipline church members? | 1 Cor 5:12 | newoldstock | 93405
This question is concerning a true event that was recently related to me and is not hypothetical. A woman told her husband, a church deacon, that she could not longer stand being married to him. She moved out and within two weeks moved in with another man. She continued to attend the church with the new boy friend. The pastor spoke to her about the unappropriateness of her continuing to attend church under the circumstances. She replied that she loved the church and the congregants and had no intention of leaving their fellowship. The minister next visited her with several other deacons to discuss the situation, but she still continued to attend services with her new man. Finally, the minister brought the situation up in a church service attended by the woman and the man, and she ran out the door in tears and never returned. These are the only details that I know. Was this the correct way to handle this? How would your congregation have handled it?
99 | Effect on a "Seekers" service? | 1 Cor 5:12 | newoldstock | 93429
Makarios, perhaps you are aware that Bill Hybles and the Willowcreek Church have what is called a "Seeker" service and have a "Followers" service on Wed. evenings. Might not many of the "Seekers" still be "living in sin"? My guess is that several of the "seekers" in this church are living together and not married. What effect would this scene have on them? Would it drive "Seekers" away from the Church, before they become born again "Followers"? I am not disagreeing with you. These questions have been asked of me concerning this situation. |
