101 | How do we discipline church members? | 1 Cor 5:12 | newoldstock | 93469
I think that this is a good answer Christian24!
102 | Effect on a "Seekers" service? | 1 Cor 5:12 | newoldstock | 93473
Seekers are both new baby Christians and those that are being drawn by the Holy Spirit toward Christ. The latter are interested and curious, but may not have truly accepted the Lord in their heart as Saviour and Lord yet. The objective is to evangelize and gently bring them to salvation.
103 | How do we discipline church members? | 1 Cor 5:12 | newoldstock | 93482
Couldn't holding Christians accountable for their actions and disciplining for these actions create gossip and backbiting amoungst the congregation? It was not the case in this situation, but suppose that the Deacon was a spouse abuser or worse and the man she moved in with was a relative or an old family friend. Well-meaning members could bring an indescretion to the attention of the pastor every day.
104 | Effect on a "Seekers" service? | 1 Cor 5:12 | newoldstock | 93491
Pastor Glenn, thanks very much for your well thought biblical answer. God Bless, Jim
105 | What is meant by under the earth? | Phil 2:10 | newoldstock | 99411
Those who are dead and buried.
106 | God helps those who help themselves? | 2 Thess 3:10 | newoldstock | 94041
I've always kind of liked this verse, but it is not an exact match to the old saying that you quoted. Your saying, I believe, is not a quote from the bible.
107 | Trifling, unedifying, stupid controversy | 2 Tim 2:23 | newoldstock | 96322
Amen, Brother! In my ex-church most of the 1700 got their weekly bible reading out of the Sunday Bulletin!
108 | Is the bible literal? | 2 Tim 3:16 | newoldstock | 92853
J.M., do you mean should the bible be understood and followed literally today? If that is what you mean, the answer is yes! The bible is not allegory! There is good manuscript evidence and knowledge that we have God's word in our modern bibles. The original manuscripts are INSPIRED, INNERRENT, AND INFALLABLE. Even the words. God does not change.
109 | Your thoughts on 40 Days of Purpose? | 2 Tim 4:2 | newoldstock | 158688
My UMC is preparing to start 40 Days of Purpose based on Rick Warren's book The Purpose Driven Life. I have some problems with the book. It has a lot of good stuff in it also, but the bad seems to out weigh the good. What do you think about this movement that is sweeping through many churches?
110 | Your thoughts on 40 Days of Purpose? | 2 Tim 4:2 | newoldstock | 158720
Hi Hank, Amen to the expositional preaching! I think that your thoughts are right on with this. I would rather read and/or hear what God wrote than what a man wrote anyday. Thanks, Jim |

111 | Your thoughts on 40 Days of Purpose? | 2 Tim 4:2 | newoldstock | 158767
Very well expressed, Hank. I teach the Wild About Wednesday bible study at my UMC and I am the only teacher in our church that goes verse by verse and sometimes word by word through the bible. I am now teaching 1John through Jude. Most of the other classes teach grief mgt., single again, growing old aint for sisies, world religions, and feel good stuff. At one point a few years ago, I tended to break the first commandment by making a god of Christian books written by men. I read every new book to such an extent that I neglected God's Holy Word. As I told you a while back, I became also so obsessed by which Bible was the best version that I spun my wheels and got no where. BTW, at one point, I got so obsessed by the Internet and this forum that I was spending less time with God and His Holy Word. That is why I have been on hiatus for quite a while. The Holy Spirit straightened me out. I say "Back to the Bible". Amen |

112 | define the family Pew Hebrews 10:24-25 | Heb 10:24 | newoldstock | 103633
What version are you using to get 'family Pew"? I don't know where you are getting family Pew.
113 | Why do we have to go church | Heb 10:25 | newoldstock | 191831
The Bible says that we should not forsake "our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more, as you see the day drawing near," (Heb. 10:25). It is wise to go to church because that is where we can go to hear the word of God preached and to experience the friendship of other believers. |

114 | Healing through prayer? | James 5:14 | newoldstock | 145612
James 5:14 Is anyone among you sick? He should call in the church elders (the spiritual guides). And they should pray over him, anointing him with oil in the Lord's name. James 5:15 And the prayer [that is] of faith will save him who is sick, and the Lord will restore him; and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. Is James talking about pysical or spiritual sickness in these verses? Or both? If you follow this proceedure, will you be pysically healed if it is God's will? |

115 | Does sin cause sickness? | James 5:14 | newoldstock | 145676
How come 5:15 links sins to sickness? Does sin cause sickness? Does healing sickness also heal sin and visa versa? And why would James say "if" when all have sinned and continue to sin? James 5:15 and the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up, and if he has committed sins, they will be forgiven him. |
