21 | Informed opinions of the ESV please? | Bible general Archive 2 | newoldstock | 98058
Nolan, I too think that the ESV is one of the best, if not the best new version. The only reason that I may stick with the NIV is to teach bible studies at my church. I have found that about 70 to 75 percent of the people in most of the classes that I teach use the NIV. It is much easier if I use the same bible that most of the class owns.
22 | Which publish for profit ? | Bible general Archive 2 | newoldstock | 98108
Ed, you bring up an interesting point. Which bible publishers publish for profit and which ones are not for profit? Which Bibles are published for marketability and sales and which ones for advancing God's Kingdom? How is the average "pew potato" to know which to purchase? BTW Most "Christian" book stores in my neck of the woods push the NIV. If you walk in one and are baffled by the cornicopia of bible assortments, most suggest the NIV. I have seen this happen many times. The NIV is now the best selling version followed by the King James. Does this indicate that most Christians do not know about the Zondervan promise or that they don't care? Is perhaps the product is more important than the publisher?

Dear Ed, a teacher is there to teach not alienate. Not to make baby Christians and Seekers feel bad about their choice of a Bible. Most of my classes are for beginners not seasoned forumers. I am there to teach God's word and not Bible marketing and publisher motivations.

Thanks for your answer and thanks for a reminder of Rom 14:3: The one who eats is not to regard with contempt the one who does not eat, and the one who does not eat is not to judge the one who eats, for God has accepted him.
25 | Do you have any internet links? | Bible general Archive 2 | newoldstock | 98140
Ed, thanks for your detailed answer. Do you have any internet links where I could go to read about this Zondervan debacle? I heard a little about it several years back, but I am not real familiar with it.
26 | Informed opinions of the ESV please? | Bible general Archive 2 | newoldstock | 98141
Ed, you bring up again a rather interesting point. The pastors of my previous UM church used and recommended the NRSV, which I do not like based on Isaiah 7:14 and Gen 1:2 and many other instances and the pastor of my new church uses the NIV because of it's clarity and universal acceptance. If you can help me with evidence to support the Zondervan deception, I will discuss it with my pastor. Jim

Ed, as a further note, the pastors recommended these specific bibles, but have said that any bible version is o.k. with them as long as it is Read. The UMC that I left has about 1,800 people attending Sunday services. It has 4 pastors and probably 35 teachers. They each have their favorite bible and recommend it. One of the lady teachers recommends the Living Bible. The older folks will read only the King James. The NIV has seemed to be a pretty good compromise.

Ed, your advise here seems sound, so I will follow it, however you are the one who orignally said "As a teacher you should instruct your people that the NIV they carry was published by a company that will go to any length to sell a book, even if it means changing the word of God." Would not your original advise be even more of an issue than confronting the Pastor? Should the flock be lead away from the recommendation of the shepard? Please be assured that I am not trying to "hammer" you on this point and I mean no offence. This is all in Christian love.

I only discovered this forum about 1 1/2 months ago and I love it. Most of the discussions are honest and forthright. I especially want to personally thank Makarios, Hank, and EdB. Your well thought answers, time, patience, grace, and biblical references have truly been an inpiration to me. This fine forum is blessed by you three. Amen. Jim

31 | How do you evangelize someone who | Bible general Archive 2 | newoldstock | 100080
How do you evangelize someone who does not necessarily believe that the bible is the word of God; and they may not even believe that there is a God without any doubts? They pay no attention if you try to use the bible in your presentation.

34 | How did alter calls or invitations start | Bible general Archive 2 | newoldstock | 102624
Hey, brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus. How was the alter call or invitation established in the church and is there any biblical reference for it? I have not found any thus far. Thanks, Jim.
35 | How did alter calls or invitations start | Bible general Archive 2 | newoldstock | 102629
Shalor, thanks for that copy of publication from Word of Life Baptist Church, Pottsville, PA. That was a big help in my quest for an answer. I have searched with due diligence and can find no biblical sanction for the modern alter call. BTW, what is your take on the 're-commitment' or renewal alter calls to restore the joy of your salvation? Ps 51:12 Restore to me the joy of Your salvation And sustain me with a willing spirit. |

37 | How did alter calls or invitations start | Bible general Archive 2 | newoldstock | 102695
Thank you all for your well thought biblical answers. I really appreciate it. My church does not do alter calls and only does communion on Wednesday evening services ONLY about once every 3 months. I believe in the value of alter calls occasionally not every Sunday. And I believe that communion should be done occasionally in the Sunday main service. I have been praying and researching prior to discussing these issues with the pastor. Thanks again for all your help! Jim

39 | how can i get the powers of the holy spi | NT general Archive 1 | newoldstock | 100958
The Holy Spirit gives POWER to witness. Acts 1:8 but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.
40 | how can i get the powers of the holy spi | NT general Archive 1 | newoldstock | 100990
These signs below are a result of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in Believers. Therefor the Holy Spirit gives us POWER to perform these signs. Mark 16:15 And He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. Mark 16:16 "He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned. Mark 16:17 "These signs will accompany those who have believed: in My name they will cast out demons, they will speak with new tongues; Mark 16:18 they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover." Mark 16:19 So then, when the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God. Mark 16:20 And they went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them, and confirmed the word by the signs that followed.] [And they promptly reported all these instructions to Peter and his companions. And after that, Jesus Himself sent out through them from east to west the sacred and imperishable proclamation of eternal salvation. ] |
