90 | what is a major and minor prophet? | OT general | Bill Richardson | 230883
The disignation "major and minor" prophet was assigned to the writings of God's prophets long ago and really doesn't mean anything like that as we would use those terms today. They really apply more to the size of their respective books and certainly doesn't mean anything like superiority of one over the other. The books of the Minor Prophets are the last 12 books of the OT: Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah and Malachi. Whereas the books of the Major Prophets are known as Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel and Daniel. The focus of the minor prophets was usually pretty narrow. For example, in Hosea, God is telling His Beloved Jewish nation how much He hates their unfaithfulness just as Hosea hates his prostitute wife's unfaithfulness. In the books of the Major Prophets, God covers many more characters in the story with many more details. In all 17 of these books, God is expressing His Displeasure with Israel's constant going back and forth between God and their false idols. Go with God in all things, Bill |

91 | Symbolic meaning of a "well" | OT general | Bill Richardson | 230891
Well said my dear friend Azure. The most powerful example (of which I can think) of what Azure is saying in response to Anjaromanov's query is from Jesus Himself from John 4. In that story, Jesus meets a Samaritan woman at a well. Notice even His disciples question their Lord's Wisdom in speaking with this woman. And Jesus shares one of the most powerful and profound facts of the future recorded in the Bible, in my humble opinion. Jn 4:19 The woman said to Him, “Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, and you Jews say that in Jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship.” 21 Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father. 22 You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews. 23 BUT THE HOUR IS COMING, AND NOW IS, WHEN THE TRUE WORSHIPERS WILL WORSHIP THE FATHER IN SPIRIT AND TRUTH; FOR THE FATHER IS SEEKING SUCH TO WORSHIP HIM. 24 GOD IS SPIRIT, AND THOSE WHO WORSHIP HIM MUST WORSHIP IN SPIRIT AND TRUTH.” What are we to take away from this story? I'm thinking the most powerful point is: We should just trust our Lord, most especially when He says something bizarre in our thinking. We should look at whatever it is we're considering and re-think about it after discarding all the prejudices from our world of humanity and try to see the subject from God's perspective. But back to the business of the well as has been mentioned. To me, it just seems this is another case of people gathering at the "watering hole" as in the western movies or around the "water fountain" at our place of employment. It seems natural for us to pause for a moment, enjoy the bit of refreshment and talk with those others gathered at the same place, same time. I have to agree with Azure; nothing mysterious about it. We do need to take God's Word as straight forward as possible with the best Commentary coming from other scriptures between Genesis 1 to Revelation 22. The passages with figurative language do lend themselves to much controversy but the most important item to remember is to gather a message from these figurative passages in compliment to the rest of our Bible as reflected in... 1 Cor 14:33 For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints. 92 | Do sinners have at least some guilt. | OT general | Bill Richardson | 231028
From http://www.chabad.org/library/article_cdo/aid/417253/jewish/Jewish-Guilt.htm "Jewish guilt" entered American literature half a century ago, and dozens of Woody Allen movies and Bernard Malamud novels later, the idea evokes a caricature of neurotic self-absorption: the Jewish father who, sixty years later, still blames all his son's failings on the fact that he couldn't afford the bicycle his kid wanted for his seventh birthday; the Jewish mother who's convinced that her failure to impress the shul president's wife marked her family as social outcasts for all generations; the Jewish rabbi who believes that all the world's troubles are caused by his own sins. Quite a self-centered, dismal and pessimistic view of the universe. In truth, it is a self-centered view, but in the most positive sense of the word. And rather than dismal and pessimistic, it is the most encouraging and optimistic perspective of reality in the history of human thought. Think about it: the notion that we, as creatures of choice, are responsible for all that occurs within our domain also implies that we do have control over what happens there, that our choices and actions do make a difference. The notion that even though my choices and actions overlap only a miniscule area of another person's life, and an even smaller area of human history, what I choose and do will profoundly influence the fate of the guy dancing on my roof, the achievements of the community of which I am a part, and the course of humanity's progress through time. What I choose and do will even make the difference between death and life, between failure and success. Of course this is the modern view from this website. But from God's Word, I would go to one of the best examples, King David in his prayer of repentance... Ps 51:1 Have mercy upon me, O God, According to Your lovingkindness; According to the multitude of Your tender mercies, Blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, And cleanse me from my sin. 3 For I acknowledge my transgressions, And my sin is always before me. 4 Against You, You only, have I sinned, And done this evil in Your sight— That You may be found just when You speak, And blameless when You judge. We can always go to the least of anyone in a given race of people and their way of reacting to God and His Word. But don't you agree, we need to visualize the best in our world as was recognized about David in... Acts 13: 22 And when He had removed him, He raised up for them David as king, to whom also He gave testimony and said, ‘I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My own heart, who will do all My will.’ All human beings need to have a contrite heart as did David after sinning, indicating their repentance. There's good and bad in all people throughout all time. But we do need to be understanding and compassionate toward those who are a little slow about responding to God as they should. Our job is to be responsible for our own behavior. Now there's a few other major characters of whom I can think, in the OT indicating their desire to repent: Samson, Josiah, Ezra and Nehemiah. You can look up their stories and see for yourself. Go with God in all things, Bill |

93 | Do sinners have at least some guilt. | OT general | Bill Richardson | 231030
I'm in absolute and full agreement with that. Only Jesus could provide the Perfect Sacrifice and His Blood to pay for our's, you, me and the rest of the world. As you've alluded, God's Absolute Sense of Complete Justice Demands that someone pay for our sins and that Someone is our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Rom 2:12 For as many as have sinned without law will also perish without law, and as many as have sinned in the law will be judged by the law 13 (for not the hearers of the law are just in the sight of God, but the doers of the law will be justified; Rom 5:16 And the gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned. For the judgment which came from one offense resulted in condemnation, but the free gift which came from many offenses resulted in justification. As always, Go with God in all things. Bill |

94 | Prophecies in Isaiah | OT general | Bill Richardson | 231031
In my mind, the most powerful purpopse of some of the prophecies was to show the coming of Christ, God's Son. But of course, to the Israelite people some of these prophecies were somewhat an enigma. Here Jesus used this OT prophecy, from Psalm 110 to confound the Pharisees... Matt 22:41 While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, 42 saying, “What do you think about the Christ? Whose Son is He?” They said to Him, “The Son of David.” 43 He said to them, “How then does David in the Spirit call Him ‘Lord,’ saying: 44 ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool”’? 45 If David then calls Him ‘Lord,’ how is He his Son?” 46 And no one was able to answer Him a word, nor from that day on did anyone dare question Him anymore. Then some few prophecies are plain and simple like... Mic 5:2 “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, Though you are little among the thousands of Judah, Yet out of you shall come forth to Me The One to be Ruler in Israel, Whose goings forth are from of old, From everlasting.” and fulfilled in Matt 2:6. I believe there are over 300 prophecies in the OT foretelling the coming of Christ and ALL of them are fulfilled in the NT, thus proving the Bible to be what it claims to be, the Word of God. 97 | Hosea and the significance of three | OT general | Bill Richardson | 231045
The most powerful example showing significence of three days, at least in my mind, is that of Christ spending "three days in the heart of the earth" as He compared this to that of Jonah. Matt 12:38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered, saying, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from You.” 39 But He answered and said to them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. 41 The men of Nineveh will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and indeed a greater than Jonah is here. 42 The queen of the South will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and indeed a greater than Solomon is here. Man lusts for signs and miracles but Jesus was disappointed in the immaturity of these people. He wanted them to grow up and recognize all the signs and miracles He had already performed and accept Him as God as we do in this timeframe. As He said, Jesus' most powerful miracle would be His own Ressurection. Yes, there had been people in the past who had been raised from the dead but this was a first. No one had ever raised Himself from the dead as cited in... Col 1:15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. 17 And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. 18 And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence. This event was absolutely unique in the entire History of the World. And of course it is one of the principle foundations of our faith as described in... 1 Cor 15:12 Now if Christ is preached that He has been raised from the dead, how do some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? 13 But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ is not risen. 14 And if Christ is not risen, then our preaching is empty and your faith is also empty. 15 Yes, and we are found false witnesses of God, because we have testified of God that He raised up Christ, whom He did not raise up—if in fact the dead do not rise. 16 For if the dead do not rise, then Christ is not risen. 17 And if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins! 18 Then also those who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. 19 If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men the most pitiable. Yes, Totally Awesome. Go with God in all things, Bill |

99 | Prophecies in Isaiah | OT general | Bill Richardson | 231053
I always like to wrap up my posts on the Forum with a reminder from Paul... Col 3:12 Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. 14 But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. 15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. 17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him. Go with God in all things, my friend. Bill |
