61 | Why did Satan want Moses bones? | Jude 1:9 | Scribe | 85323
The existance of the Book of Enoch among the dead sea scrolls does not proove that Jude was quoting Enoch. It could be that the Jews held to a tradition about a prophecy of Enoch that Jude quotes perfectly under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, and that the writer or writers of the book of Enoch knew of this tradition also but fabricated their version to the point of ridiculousness, as it is fairly obvious that it is a fabulous tale from writers with Greek influence. So Jude's quote of known tradition among the Jews, and the book of Enoch merge on the tradition, but Jude may not necessisarily be quoting from Enoch. The same with the mention of the Body of Moses, it is very possible that Jude was mentioning only that part of Jewish tradition that was actually true history not quoting from the Assumption of Moses, and that the writer of the Assumption of Moses had taken up their own account of the same tradition. There is no evidence that Jude was quoting from these books. The way Jude simply speaks of it as known history makes it sound more like he was speaking of known tradition among the Jews. I really do not know for sure whether he was quoting from them or not. If he was I do not believe that gives them authority as scripture anymore than when Paul quoted from Greek poets. When it comes right down to daily living, I have to believe God has preserved His Word as He said He would, If Jude quoted the book of Enoch, and Enoch is not scripture, then it only stands to reason that the revelation of what Enoch prophesied was passed down through history, before the writing of the book of enoch, and that this account was never recorded by the prophets until Jude, is simply a Divine manifestation of God keeping certain things secret until the time came. And it really does not matter much to me, because even if he was quoting from the book of Enoch, the truth that he is giving at the time is all about the coming of the Lord and judgement upon the ungodly that are teaching false doctrine. If that is what we focus on in this passage we do not really care who he is quoting, we see that this truth of Jude is in agreement with the whole Bible, where as the things in the book of enoch are not at all in agreement but gross Greek/Hebrew fables. |

I personaly do not think that Jude is quoting from the Assumption of Moses. The Assumption of Moses, for those that do not know, was in extant at the time of Origen, who thought that Jude might be referring to it. However there is no proof that the Assumption of Moses was in extant at the time of Jude. If it was then it seems to me that Jude would have made it clear in some way like Paul did that he was quoting from an extra biblical source, such as "one of your own prophets has said." But Jude mentions it like it is actual history and so I think it was most likely a Jewish tradition that contained truth. This is the only way I can reconcile it in my mind so far. I think that The mention of Enoch and this mention are not quotes from apocryphal books but rather there have been books written by gnostics and other spurious writers that attempted to fabricate stories based on these mentions in the Bible. But I that is my opinion and I am aware that there are many that have a different one. May God Bless you as you study His Word. |

I understand your unwillingness to embrace such an interpretation, EdB and as I stated in my post "I do not content for this interpretation since it belongs in the realm speculation, but it works best for me at this time and better than most commentaries I have read thus far." Also as you accurately quoted me as saying "Moses' body Might have been taken to heaven," This is not speaking with authority. If I spoke with authority I would say that this is the undeniable clear meaning of the text and beyond all dispute. But I do not say such a thing. Your ideas are as valid as mine since we do not have clear explanation of the dispute over the body of Moses. The fact is that we have it in Jude and only what God wanted us to know is the most important which is, that we ought to humble ourselves and not presume upon God or the adminstrations of God when it comes to things we no nothing about such as angels and their ministries. I understand that Jude had to content with gnostics and Judaizers as the other apostles also did, and that he is rebuking them for their arrogant attitudes thinking they have inside knowlege about angels and such things, and also that they think they have the the right to rail against authorities, (whether in the church, or heavenlies) It is simply a rebuke toward them that even Michael who is greater in authority and might than satan (and also than these railers) did not bring railing accusation against satan, but appeals to the authority of God who is Judge of all. We also must be careful not to rail against authorities either in the church or without, or for that matter even agains satan, calling him names and thinking that by our wrathful spewing of words upon him that we somehow are able to have an effect on him. We should simply say the Lord rebuke you, to satan, and the powers of darkness. However taking up the argument that this reference is in the word of God to hint at anything else besides that one lesson, maybe it applies to your interpretation and maybe it applies to mine or maybe we are both wrong. I think if we use scripture to compare with scripture and look up all the references in the bible that have to do with "The Lord Rebuke you" or other references where satan and michael fight it seems more fitting that we would be on the right path of gaining insight than if we simply imagine other possible scenarios with no biblical pattern based on this text. At least that is the only thing I feel comfortable persuing. If I cannot find other references of like kind, I might as well leave it alone altogether because anyones guess is as good as anothers. Concerning the idea that the warfare is legal in nature. This is not something I made up today. It has been expounded upon by many scholars in church history and I am only agreeing with them that I have often seen the same pattern in the scriptures. The whole Bible declares this progression of the Justice of a Holy God not being violated by a cheap grace. The fact that Jesus had to die and rise again to purchase your salvation.. Legal justification.. That God would be Just and the Justifier of him that believes in Jesus is about this. Remember the story of Job. This is not some fairy tale or parable that never happened. Satan did indeed appear before God and accuse Job.. this is a picture of what still goes on. Satan is still accusing the brethren night and day. But there is coming a day when he is cast down and not allowed into this heavenlie court and that is what happens in Revelation. Of course there are those that have different views. Many see the battle in revelation as having already occurred when satan originally fell. I do not see it that way becuase the rejoicing of the saints having overcome him by the blood of the Lamb is associated with this event and would mean that it had to either happen at the cross or resurrection or at the future resurrection. May God Bless You as You study His Word. |

64 | Why did Satan want Moses bones? | Jude 1:9 | Scribe | 85230
No, this is the fulfilment of the prophesy, death is swallowed up in victory. Paul saw a mystery revealed by illumination (and divine inspiration) concerning many old Testament prophesies about the resurrection from the dead. He saw that the prophesies speak of a people that would be alive and changed immortal. 1 Corinthians 15:51-56 Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? There is a generation of saints that will not see death. Paul believed he could be part of that generation, so he said "WE". No man knows the hour, and God could have made it come to pass in Pauls day so Paul was not wrong, for God is not subject to time but time is subject to God. So we can say the same.. When WE that are alive are changed, our corruptible body is changed to incorruptible. You see that is the change spoken of. Changed from mortal to immortal, not that we die, but that we will not all see death, but some will just be changed. The dead in christ rise first, then we are changed in a twinkling to glorified bodies and rise. Our bodies are not left behind, they are changed and made glorified and eternal. Now when this occurs we also shine like the sun, and like the glory which Christ had on the mount, and we rise in glory. The world will see it in my opinion. |

65 | Creation Account: Mythical or Not? | Gen 1:27 | Scribe | 85193
Having experienced the Living Word I am not in a condition to need to find any scientific proofs for the Creation story of Genisis. However if I could put myself in the shoes of an honest intellectual who wants to know whether or not he can rely on the scientific accuracy of Genesis or if it is a story far removed from the original account that contains some hints of the original but not to be taken literally I would start my investigation in the area of archealogy, astronomy, and geology, and see if there are evidences of the account that Genesis gives. We will learn that as it relates to the way stars are born their is the possibility of light before the actual formation of the sun just like this account gives, we find that the order of creation, water, land, vegetaion, etc agrees with scientific knowledge on the order of the way things came about, we see that there are archaelogical finds in the oldest civilizations such as the sumerians (same area as Babylon but older) that extend to the time of nimrod after the flood that reveal stories and records of a flood, and also possible first man and woman stories associated with a serpent, However the stories in babylonia is childish and grotesquely ridiculous showing, that it was a corruption from the original, where as the Genesis account is logical and perfect in its concepts, therefore would be the original story, and the others found in archaelogy are corruptions. So in short, the Bible's account of creation has never needed correction, and remains the same century after century, but the theories proposed by men have changed constantly and continue to do so, and even in the light of the constant changes (some as drastic as revising the time it takes a planet to form, from billions of years to only 3 million which was presented last week)even in the light of these kind of radical changes in view, the arrogant man will attempt to compare the genisis account with their current ideas and judge the Genisis account as fact or fiction based on the current fantasy. However the interesting thing is that the theories of modern science keep changing in favor of the Biblical account. 3 million years is a lot longer than 6 days but not as much as the billions they once held to. The hubble space telescope is sugesting to the observers that the earth might indeed be the center of the universe and that all things are expanding away from it. Go figure. May God Bless You as You Study His Word. |

66 | In the book of Matthew, who are the goat | Matt 24:1 | Scribe | 85038
I believe that the message is that we are to show love by our actions toward our brother. Jesus says "in as much as you have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren" is probably not meant to mean the race of the Jewish people, but more likely first and foremost the Christian that obeys the Lords commands, as He says in another place, "For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother." And we have the oft admonition of Paul to show compassion, and support unto the household of faith, and again his continuous concern for the poor among the saints throughout the book of Acts. Do not mistake me, I do not believe a person who is hungry should be ignored by a passing saint whether or not that hungry man is part of the church or not. However, if it be a sin to ignore the "unidentifiable" man under the bridge downtown, how much more will we be counted guilty who ignore the needy among our own local fellowship of believers. We are first given the responsibility and accountability before God over our handing of the needs we know about among our brethren and that which is within our poor to relieve. I agree that this passage in Matthew 25:32 does apply to serving all the needy but particularly those of the church. If so.. where will the man end up who claims "belief" in Christ and who has the power to relieve the suffering in his own circle of influence and lifts not a finger to help because doing so might hinder plans for purchasing a bigger house, 5 times larger than his family needs? Will the Lord say.. enter in.. you loose a few rewards.. but it is not that big of a deal.. after all you did believe the things in the Bible really happened. Or will he say.. depart from me... Go over there with the goats. You knew of needs among your own church and it was in your power to help that sister or brother. You said to yourself.. That is the pastors job, if they need help let them go to him. " I am not trying to change the doctrine of Grace, and salvation by faith. However, did you know that Luther had issues accepting James as canonical? This tells me that even then men have a tendency to think actions of love might somehow be related to attempts to making oneself appear righteous by practicing the Law. The two are nothing alike. The law is a list of precepts that one can keep without even understanding their meaning or shadow. Then such a legalist can go about having no love for others and deceive himself into thinking he is righteous because he kept the list of precepts, line upon line. The spiritual man who is following Faith and not the works of the law is full of Love and will be seeking to help others. Does this active love that helps others save the man? No, Faith is what saves Him, but as James said, the kind of Faith that God accepts is not a faith we make up and call it faith, but the kind of Faith HE GIVES US, and that Faith works by Love, there is no such thing as saving faith that does not love others and actively prove it. If we find that we are doing nothing to relieve the suffering of saints in our realm of influence then we have every reason to examine the validity of our faith. We can have the real God kind of Faith, the only kind He accepts, but we must not allow deception to enter in and "ease" our conscience into accepting less than the real kind of Faith that seeks to help others. Otherwise, even those that think they are part of the sheep will find they are nothing but goats in that day. I am afraid that in this age we have a mixed gospel. That sometimes the true Gospel is preached and at other times minister proclaim a false hope of salvation that costs men nothing. The gift of eternal life is freely given to all that believe, and yet this never removes the fact that unless you are willing to take up your cross and follow him (which means you are willing to die for Him) you cannot be His disciple. Therefore Believing is not just mental assent, it is a total commitment unto death. But we have the promise that they that give their lives for His sake will find it. This is to be applied in a spiritual way, on a daily basis indeed, but it is also to be applied to the very act of self sacrifice in a physical way, giving up your own comforts to show love to another. This is message of the true Gospel and the only one that brings salvation. May God Bless You As You Study His Word. |

68 | Predestination question? | 1 Tim 2:4 | Scribe | 84970
I am tempted to add more scriptures to each one you mention, some which round out the scripture truth yours bring up, and some that go beyond to present a complete picture such as the concept of Blotting out names written in the Book, which presents a whole different idea than what you are attempting to present. I am not saying that this forumn is not the place to post them, I cannot think of a better "forumn" than this one to explore both sides of the issue, since each side has to carefully read the other's and this would contribute to a much more productive form of exchange in an effort to sincerely arrive at a conclusion based on a correct interpretation of the whole counsel of God. However, partly because I think the subject has already been given more attention than it is due in academic circles, and partly because I think the vast majority of saints have already made up their minds on this subject before they ever enter into such debates, I will refrain from any further posts on predestination at this time. Maybe later when I am writing my Bible Study Series on this subject I will post some Scriptures and arguments for why I believe the way I do. Meanwhile.. May God Bless you in your study of His Word |

69 | what is the world made of? | Eph 2:19 | Scribe | 84937
Job 28:5-6 As for the earth, out of it cometh bread: and under it is turned up as it were fire. The stones of it are the place of sapphires: and it hath dust of gold. Job is an awesome book. Job is considered by many to be the oldest of the OT. I am not so sure about that, but it is at least one of the oldest. Job seems to be full of these interesting hints of scientific knowledge, that proove that the bible has had hints of science insight thousands of years before men found out through careful observation the same things. Long before men figured it out Job tells us that there is fire in the center of the earth. |

Thank you Jude2425 for you thoughts. Interesting interpretation. I have found others that seem to see the fair treatment of oppressed Jews in this passage as well. So you are suggesting that if the gentile saved person visited a sick Jew, he would then be rewarded. What if he only visited sick gentiles? |

72 | Predestination question? | 1 Tim 2:4 | Scribe | 84928
Thanks for your posts John. I am not going to add any more to it at this time. It seems to me that we are saying the same thing when it comes to the actual text itself. It is the additional interpretations that seem to go off in different paths. Yes the text is clear. We agree that all those that receive the gift are justified and at least that ALL those that recieve it are granted Life. The difference in opinion will be about whether a man has the ability to have faith, I am sure that he can except when he sins againt knowledge and then is given over to a reprobate mind. I am sure that scripture is clear that all men are born with the ability to seek after God, but that all men go their own way. All men can reach out toward God in faith in the light that they have and God will grant more light. Of course a mans choices will determine whethe he is given more light. What kind of intellectual mind bending is taught in seminary to make a person ignore all the scriptures that state such a thing is beyond me, but I know they pull it off everyday. I steer clear of all such confusion. I live this truth everyday. As long as I humble myself before the Lord in repentance and obedience the more understanding and illumination I recieve. If I draw back and refuse to give up something the Lord has put "his finger" on, I experience almost immediate halt in my spiritual growth, and illumination. May we keep our eye single, devoted to Jesus Christ and Him alone at any cost, that our whole body might be full of light. In that day when the secrets of our hearts are judged by Jesus Christ that we may be holy and without blame before Him in Love. |

73 | Predestination question? | 1 Tim 2:4 | Scribe | 84669
John, You state " Are all men justified by the "one act of righteousness". No! Are all men born condemned by "the transgression of the one"? Yes!" In my opinion you are missing the clear meaning of the verse. But not just this one. As you have stated there are many more that Paul preached that we could us to add to it. More so than the ones that might seem to say otherwise at first glance. But I will save the list for another time. Sticking to this one passage it does indeed declare that ALL men are justified by one act of righteousness. All they have to do is appropriate it by faith. This is why it is not called works. The work is already done. When you were saved Jesus did not do a new work that day for you to save you. He did not get back on the cross for you on that day. He had already done it at the cross. And the great and glorious mystery of God is that He had already finished it at the foundations of the world. But it did you no good until you had faith. So Yes all men are justifed by the Act of One Jesus Christ. And most of the time both sides of this question will end up saying similar if not the same things. No not all men will repent and be born again. But all men will only have themselves to blame becuase they can pursue good, and if they do, God will lead them into more light, eventually into saving faith. If they choose evil, they will be driven to darkness. And those that are in darkness destined to desctrucion, becuase they choose death, even they God will use to fulfill his purposes. So repeating again. Are all men justified by the one act of righteousness? I say Yes. This is the Good News.. go Herald it from the mountain tops.. some will hear and have faith and cry out to God in adoration and praise at so great and undeserved a salvation.. Others will thumb their noses at it and say "eh! I don't believe it" and they will go into perdition and the believers will be made holy and enter life. God Bless you as you study the Word. |

74 | Predestination question? | 1 Tim 2:4 | Scribe | 84667
“Romans 5:18 connects the two clauses with the comparative 'even so'. If the extent in the first clause is universal, why then would the extent in the second clause be limited?” Very well said, Tim. You have, in one sentence made crystal clear what I saw in my time of meditation. I am still dwelling on the vast and glorious implications of the universal application of the "..the righteousness of one and the justification of life coming upon all men that believe..". . going forth not just as to all men that will be born and believe (as in Adam all dieing because of sin).. but how that this righteous is EVEN greater and Goes backwards along the history of mankind and is applied to all men that believe. The justification went forth at the Death Burial and Resurrection, to all future men that will believe, and is extended to them all without reservation, and extends backwards upon all them that have believed in times past all the way back to Adam himself. Universal? the half has never yet been told. |

75 | Why didn't Jesus perform baptisms? | John 4:2 | Scribe | 84507
Hello Ray, Acts 15 is well connected with Acts 10. As the discussion of the need for circumcision among the gentiles that are christians is being raised, the example of gentiles converted that are given as the basis of Peters argument is that of the house of Cornelius. The very quote you mention is by Peter in reference to what he had experienced in the house of Cornelius Acts 15:9 And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith. Now if you read the story of the conversion of the gentiles in Cornelius house they are all saved by faith and have evidence of such by the outpouring of the Holy Spirit and even the gift of tongues. Then afterwards they are baptized in water. This baptism in water is after their hearts have been cleansed by faith, and yet they still follow through with water baptism. Why? We could discuss it until Jesus comes again but I think that based on the verse we have on baptism we conclude that there are two major points in obeying this command. 1) It is an ACT of faith that is external and not just internal, by doing it we make ourselves accountable. We put the world and the devil on notice, that we are following Christ. It is all about Following the Lord Jesus Christ and not just saying we believe in GOD. We are not just saying we are going to get religious. We are not even just saying that we are following the God of Abraham. We are stating by baptism that we believe in JESUS CHRIST and that there is no other way than the death burial and resurrection of JESUS CHRIST that a man is saved. It is a declaration that THIS is the true salvation and no other. It is also a way of making ourselves accountable. When the enemy comes against us to discount what God has done, the public confession of baptism gives you the fortitude of character to follow through with your decision. An action on the part of the new convert such as water baptism can make the difference between a short lived emotional experience and a true "going all the way" laying down your life walk day by day following Jesus Christ salvation that we all want. The only problem I have with modern day baptism in protestant evangelical churches is that it is not frequent enough. If I pastored a church I would baptize every week and if not I would wonder why we were not getting anyone saved. |

There is no evidence that there are any "lost books." There are references to books in the bible but the reference to the book does not say that the said book was ever considered scripture. To mention a book does not mean that there are any missing scriptures.
78 | What is the literal Greek translation? | Matt 22:37 | Scribe | 64731
These are good thoughts. I don't think any serious bible student suggests that we should not be concerned with baptism, I think the debate occurs when the idea is suggested that someone in a prison in a country that will not allow baptism to be performed (and yes this happens and even in the US) that the prisoner is not saved if he has expressed faith in Christ and has a testimony of being born again. It might be as much as 8 months or more before he is allowed to be baptized by a chaplain in jailhous infirmary bathtub. Is he saved during the 8 months? Yes of course I was :) and I had the fruit of a changed life as well as the baptism of the Holy Spirit to proove it. Did I have the right to dismiss the need for baptism? Of course not. As soon as I was able I jumped at the chance. And yet I was saved an on my way to Heaven and leading others to christ preaching the Gospel under the annointing of the Holy Spirit for months. Some would say, I should not make up such scenarios becuase they do not happen, but that is not true, if you are in prison ministry you know that it is a daily issue, do you affirm that the young men you are ministering to are born again, and teach them the doctrine of eternal security in Christ as you do other saints or do you leave them in doubt until the baptism of water when it could be months before that occurs? Yes I know that they allow baptism in water by chaplains, but it is planned and often in many institutions very infrequent. This raises another question I have. Why don't we seek to baptize people as fast as Peter did. Why do we seem so ho hum about baptizing when the next "baptismal service" is scheduled on the church calendar? As stated I believe that in cases like prison the new believer is just as saved and born again as anyone else if he has faith in Christ, even though he has not yet been baptized in water. However if the opportunity is there, what gives us the idea we should not be as urgent about finding water as they did in ACTS. I am a firm believer that despite the challenges and problems we see in the first church the book of Acts is our pattern, it is no a changeable pattern to be modified to fit our day. If they saw baptism in water as urgent so should we. If I pastored I would seek to baptize the same day someone repented, I don't care if the church service lasts longer, and all the half baked get mad and leave, the real saints will be left rejoicing as we baptize the new believer impromptu and forget about this sending out cards to family members and bringing your video camera. We have become quite wierd in our complacent and indifferent attitude toward the eternal things of a Holy God. |

Thanks for the information EdB. I also noticed that if a person responds to an often asked question with a particular verse in the proper scripture field, then that becomes part of the notes on that verse. This is a wonderful way to collect different views on scripture. It is very refreshing to read these views that are not constrained by trained ways of thinking. Keep up the good work.

might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ: Peter was talking to saints 2000 years before Christ has returned, and saying that the trials they were going through then are going to be REWARDED at the appearing of Jesus Christ. When Jesus Comes again we enter into an inheritance that is worth all that we might endure in the way of suffering for his name now. |
