41 | AO, was His John 3 not in effect? | John 4:14 | Aspiring Overseer | 103318
Hi Searcher, What Jesus taught in John 3:1-21 does not pertain to the Old Testament, but the New. No one of the Jews was "born again" to enter the Kingdom of God. Jesus was instructing Nicodemus of the things to come AFTER His death and resurrection. Thus water baptism prior to the start of the Christian Church was not required. AO |

Searcher, No, just in this instance as he is clearly talking about the Christian Age. Do you see this differently? AO |

43 | Where does Scripture teach an exception? | John 4:14 | Aspiring Overseer | 103447
Tim, At the day of Pentecost, did the Apostles understand the gospel before they received the HS? In Acts chapter 1 were they not asking Jesus when He would restore the Kingdom to the Jews? They obviously had a very imperfect understanding UNTIL they received the HS. Then Peter immediately began to preach the gospel. Why did this happen, do you suppose? Did not the HS bring understanding of God's master plan that they before lacked (such as the command for water baptism)? Jumping ahead to the first Gentile conversion in Acts 10, God gives us the same pattern. First understanding, then obedience. Acts 10 tells us that this confirmed to the Apostles that the gospel was for both Jews and Gentiles. God did not want to vary the initial pattern, because it was instrumental in the Apostle’s understanding of God’s impartial nature. Acts 10 did not say that this pattern was to ever again happen. The Apostles knew that and responded accordingly. How? By preaching the proper steps to conversion. Not only Acts 2:38, but many other verses throughout, as I know you are aware. That is why incident after incident of conversion always includes water baptism. Paul mentioned it; Luke mentioned it; Peter mentioned it. Did these men mention it because it seemed like a good idea or because they were directed to write it by the HS? If by the HS, it follows that this is a command of God. John 14:15 15"If you love Me, you will keep My commandments. NAS AO |

44 | Are these words for today? | John 13:35 | Aspiring Overseer | 106700
Aixen, John 13:35 35"By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another." NAS The key to John 13:35 is to understand that not all people who today say they are Christians, actually are. Most people have no understanding of the Bible, especially the denominations you mention. Christians do in fact, love (agape) each other and have genuine compassion for those who are lost. They are also of the same mind in that there is no disagreement on any aspect of God's master plan between them. In the denominationalist, worldly Christian paradigm, John 13:35 becomes a very difficult saying, but to a member of Christ's body it is accepted and followed without question. P.S. All men will know Christ’s disciples at some time. If not during their life, certainly in death. AO |

45 | Friday crucifixion | John 19:31 | Aspiring Overseer | 181134
For your consideration: The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. [It was the preparation] Every Sabbath had a preparation which began at the ninth hour (that is, three o'clock) the preceding evening. Josephus, Ant. b. 16 c. 6, s. 51, recites an edict of the Emperor Augustus in favour of the Jews, which orders, "that no one shall be obliged to give hail or surety on the Sabbath day, nor on the preparation before it, after the ninth hour." The time fixed here was undoubtedly in conformity to the Jewish custom, as they began their preparation at three o'clock on the Friday evening. (from Adam Clarke's Commentary, Electronic Database. 46 | What scripture quotes name of "beloved d | John 21:20 | Aspiring Overseer | 91468
George, Is this what you seek? John 21:20-24 20Peter, turning around, saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them; the one who also had leaned back on His breast at the supper, and said, "Lord, who is the one who betrays You?" 21Peter therefore seeing him said to Jesus, "Lord, and what about this man?" 22Jesus said to him, "If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow Me!" 23This saying therefore went out among the brethren that that disciple would not die; yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but only, "If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you?" 24This is the disciple who bears witness of these things, and wrote these things; and we know that his witness is true. 47 | Die without the revelation of the Gospel | Acts 17:30 | Aspiring Overseer | 180845
Finder, You asked, "How could the ones that are not reached with the message be morally accountable to a message they never heard?" and "Could this then be true that these peoples are saved without ever hearing the message of the Gospel?". We know that God is specific in giving us but one way to be saved, so to surmise that pagans might be given an alternative route would be easily refuted. We also know that God many times caused complete nations to perish due to their failure to worship Him. Although the example you give would, indeed, be circumstantial, if we assume that none from the prior generations had ever received the gospel, could it be they had not asked? In other words, is it not possible that none questioned the truth of their pagan religion? Instead of imploring God for the truth, they set off to find it through man-made avenues. If this was the case, why would God send one of His priests to someone who is not seeking? Prov 8:17 17"I love those who love me; And those who diligently seek me will find me. NAS Zephaniah 1:1-6 1:1 The word of the LORD which came to Zephaniah son of Cushi, son of Gedaliah, son of Amariah, son of Hezekiah, in the days of Josiah son of Amon, king of Judah, 2 "I will completely remove all things From the face of the earth," declares the LORD. 3 "I will remove man and beast; I will remove the birds of the sky And the fish of the sea, And the ruins along with the wicked; And I will cut off man from the face of the earth," declares the LORD. 4 "So I will stretch out My hand against Judah And against all the inhabitants of Jerusalem. And I will cut off the remnant of Baal from this place, And the names of the idolatrous priests along with the priests. 5 "And those who bow down on the housetops to the host of heaven, And those who bow down and swear to the LORD and yet swear by Milcom, 6 And those who have turned back from following the LORD, And those who have not sought the LORD or inquired of Him. " NAS Conversely, if just one person questioned the religion of their pagan ancestors and prayed to God for the truth, would not God have been faithful? Either that individual would have left their country in search of the truth or the truth would have been brought to them. Thus the answer is not that God makes different rules for different people, but that the individuals failed to sincerely seek God. Acts 17:25-27 26 and He made from one, every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined their appointed times, and the boundaries of their habitation, 27 that they should seek God, if perhaps they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us; NAS Best regards, AO |

48 | Are there isolated evidences for this | Acts 17:30 | Aspiring Overseer | 180852
Finder, I do not mean to be dense, but could you please restate your point(s) with respect to the following: "But this kind of hypothesis rules out the unique evidences that single individuals out of pagan societies could really have a fair opportunity to be saved. There doesn't seem to be any pattern from among the pagans that could justify that these isolated individuals had the same fair choice as the evangelized do. Which makes the following verses sound contradictory: " Thank you. AO |

49 | The ignorant didn't need to repent | Acts 17:30 | Aspiring Overseer | 180927
Finder, Thank you for your patience. I believe my "fog" this morning was self-imposed due to a multitude of tasks at hand and, possibly, an insufficient quantity of caffeine. Without a doubt, we must dismiss the possibility that a pagan, if faithful "to the light they have", will be saved, even if they hear nothing of Christ. Romans 10:14 14 How then shall they call upon Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? NAS So without hearing they will not come to the truth, which they must achieve to enter Christ's Kingdom. As to “multiple paths”, either the Bible is the truth or a complete lie. The Apostle Paul’s instruction is clear that if even he would have preached a different path, he would have stood condemned. Galatians 1:8-10 8 But even though we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to that which we have preached to you, let him be accursed. 9 As we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to that which you received, let him be accursed. NAS As to why there is little or no evidence of these conversions, I would suggest two possible reasons. One, they are likely exceedingly rare. Old Testament examples show the percentage of righteous to pagans as extremely low, i.e. Sodom and Gomorrah, the Flood, etc.. Second, God likely causes each soul to be born in just the proper environment to fulfill His Master Plan. Just as Pharaoh was placed in his position because God knew Pharaoh would never obey Him, so God likely places the souls of those who will not obey Him in these highly indoctrinated societies. Conjecture, but in the "big picture", is it man's position to ask God why He did not save past generations? The Lord demands I serve Him; not the other way around. P.S. Does Acts 17:30 say that God has "saved" those who were ignorant of Him or simply that He will not punish them for their ignorance if they repent? If the later, would not the repentance be the seeking of God in accordance with knowledge (of the truth)? Best regards, AO |

50 | What choice do pagans have | Acts 17:30 | Aspiring Overseer | 181131
Finder, Please forgive my delayed response. I appreciate your sympathy for those that are lost. We must remember that regardless of their circumstance, all people have a choice to seek God. The pagan who acknowledges that someone created the world around him, if that individual is sincere, will seek to find the creator. If not, they will follow the societal customs of their group. Their choice has not been denied them. As for Romans 10:14, a vast number of people did hear the gospel, but refused to believe. In fact the gospel has already been preached throughout the entire world. That certain societies have disobeyed and long since forgotten the word of God is not God’s fault. Romans 10:18 18 But I say, surely they have never heard, have they? Indeed they have; "Their voice has gone out into all the earth, And their words to the ends of the world." NAS Everyone who seeks God in accordance with the truth will find Him. To have very large populations be condemned is not surprising and is unquestionably fair. Who are we that we should question the actions of God? AO |

A few verses to consider regarding the completeness of the Bible: Deut 4:1-2 4:1"And now, O Israel, listen to the statutes and the judgments which I am teaching you to perform, in order that you may live and go in and take possession of the land which the LORD, the God of your fathers, is giving you. 2You shall not add to the word which I am commanding you, nor take away from it, that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you. NAS Deut 12:32-13:1 32"Whatever I command you, you shall be careful to do; you shall not add to nor take away from it. NAS Josh 1:6-8 7Only be strong and very courageous; be careful to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, so that you may have success wherever you go. 8This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have success. NAS Prov 30:6 6Do not add to His words Lest He reprove you, and you be proved a liar. NAS Matt 28:19-20 19"Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. " NAS Rev 22:18-19 18I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God shall add to him the plagues which are written in this book; 19and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the tree of life and from the holy city, which are written in this book. NAS God apparently does not expect to add to His own word. Additionally, several verses speak for the completeness of the disclosed master plan of God. Jude 3-4 3Beloved, while I was making every effort to write you about our common salvation, I felt the necessity to write to you appealing that you contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints. NAS Jude 5 5Now I desire to remind you, though you know all things once for all, that the Lord, after saving a people out of the land of Egypt, subsequently destroyed those who did not believe. NAS Acts 20:27 27"For I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole purpose of God. NAS 2 Peter 3:1-2 3:1This is now, beloved, the second letter I am writing to you in which I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder, 2that you should remember the words spoken beforehand by the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior spoken by your apostles. NAS 1 Cor 14:33 33for God is not a God of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints. NAS Keep praying for guidance and God will be faithful. |

Rom 8:1-11 8:1There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 2For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. 3For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, 4in order that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. 5For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. 6For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace, 7because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so; 8and those who are in the flesh cannot please God. 9However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. 10And if Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness. 11But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who indwells you. NAS Can a person be in Christ and not know it? Can a person set his mind on the things of the spirit if he does not have the HS? Can a person set his mind on the things of the spirit unless he is in Christ? AO |

Heb 5:8-10 9And having been made perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation, NAS He is the source, IF, we obey Him. Acts 5:31-32 32"And we are witnesses of these things; and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey Him." NAS We have the HS, IF, we obey Him. 2 Thess 1:8 8dealing out retribution to those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. NAS Those who do not understand His word and/or chose not to obey Him WILL suffer retribution. Matt 17:5 5While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them; and behold, a voice out of the cloud, saying, "This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased; listen to Him!" The attribute of Faith is having complete trust, confidence, reliance and loyalty in God. Faith is shown by a person’s willful obedience to God’s law and is not the simple belief that God’s law exists without need of any future consideration. To have faith means you act upon your belief! We understand God’s word is truth and that we live under a New Covenant. What is our obligation under that covenant? Why is the Law of Faith one that calls for action rather than passivity? Why is faith in God always associated with work? What is Faith? - See He 11:1-2 –Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the men of old gained approval... -Faith is the unquestioning belief that underlies a person’s response to a duty or obligation. Each of the many examples of Hebrews demonstrate how God’s people of the Old Covenant proved their trust in God. -“the men of old gained approval” through their righteous actions: -Abel offered a better sacrifice v. 4 -Enoch walked with God, because God found him “pleasing” (v. 5) -Noah built the ark (v. 7) What is belief? - Belief is defined by Webster’s’ New World dictionary as “to take as true”. To believe something as true does not automatically lead to action. JA 2:19 (….the demons also believe and shudder.) -Cain believed his sacrifice was as good as Abel’s, etc. What separates us from Demons? -Faith. Christians are called to be faithful to fulfill our obligation to God. See Col 1:1-29 Where does faith come from? -From hearing the word of God. See Ro10:17, but also above. Why is this important? -The world preaches, “all you must do is believe and you’ll be saved. No action is necessary. Work was required in the past, but no longer”. Numerous passages throughout the N.T., however, speak of the action God commands of a Christian as proof of their faith. -Rom 12:1-2 12:1 I urge you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. 2And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect. NAS James 1:21-22 22 But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves. NAS How do we know faith involves more than simple belief? 1) It is empirically true: From a person’s own experience and observation we know faith defines an absolute conviction where belief is passive. We believe the airplane is safe, but it is our faith in its airworthiness that allows us to fly from Seattle to NY, thus proving our belief. 2) By example, O.T. faith in God was proven by deeds. He 11:1-2 3) By N.T. command, Christians are called to action. -Ph2:12-15 (work out your salvation) - JA 2:14 (what use is it, my brethren, if a man says he has faith..) Why are Christians to be faithful? -Faithfulness equals obedience. See Jo14:21-24 -What is God’s law? Can it be found anywhere besides the N.T.? Scripture, or the Bible, is a reference manual for God’s people that teaches, and at the same time, demonstrates that only Christians will be saved! God’s word is truth (Jo 17:17) and all inclusive (i. e. there are no other routes to eternal life!) As our creator, he has made a covenant with us, or agreement. We must obey our part of the covenant if we are to expect our reward. |

59 | Are we free from the Law? | Rom 7:6 | Aspiring Overseer | 150111
Iktoose, Your original question stated, “We (believers) are free from the Law (Romans 7:6) but Paul stated in Romans 3:31 that we should uphold the Law. Can someone tell me what part of the Mosaic Law (Pentateuch) we should still comply? I wish there was a clear black and white line drawn.”. I have not taken the time to review all the posts to your original question, but I believe you might find the start of your answer in the analysis of the verses you contrast (Ro 7:6 and Ro 3:31). Rom 7:6 6 But now we have been released from the Law, having died to that by which we were bound, so that we serve in newness of the Spirit and not in oldness of the letter. NAS Rom 3:31 31 Do we then nullify the Law through faith? May it never be! On the contrary, we establish the Law. NAS Clearly Ro 7:6 refers to the Law of Moses as it states disciples had “been released from the Law”, yet Ro 3:31 says the Law is established! Do we have more context to determine Paul’s meaning? By looking back to verse 27 we are given clarification: Rom 3:27 27 Where then is boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? Of works? No, but by a law of faith. NAS These verses are referring to totally different laws. Where Ro 7:6 speaks of the Mosaic Law, Ro 3:31 refers back to the Law of Faith; two different laws; one for the Mosaic Age, the other for the Christian Age. God’s people prior to the Christian Age were expected to follow God’s commands. Failure to do so resulted in punishment. During the Christian Age, God’s people are still expected to follow His commands: John 14:15 15 "If you love Me, you will keep My commandments. NAS Heb 5:9 9 And having been made perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation, NAS Failure to obey continues to result in punishment. Thus law continues in the Christian Age; outlining the actions we must perform to uphold our end of the contract; designed by God and established by our Lord. I am at your service if you wish to discuss this further. AO |

60 | is there security of the believer | Rom 8:39 | Aspiring Overseer | 68266
Can salvation be lost? Heb 2:1 2:1For this reason we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. NAS Heb 3:12 12Take care, brethren, lest there should be in any one of you an evil, unbelieving heart, in falling away from the living God. NAS 2 Peter 2:20-22 20For if after they have escaped the defilements of the world by the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and are overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first. 21For it would be better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn away from the holy commandment delivered to them. 22It has happened to them according to the true proverb, "A dog returns to its own vomit," and, "A sow, after washing, returns to wallowing in the mire." NAS James 5:19-20 19My brethren, if any among you strays from the truth, and one turns him back, 20let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death, and will cover a multitude of sins. NAS Heb 10:26-29 26For if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27but a certain terrifying expectation of judgment, and the fury of a fire which will consume the adversaries. 28Anyone who has set aside the Law of Moses dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29How much severer punishment do you think he will deserve who has trampled under foot the Son of God, and has regarded as unclean the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has insulted the Spirit of grace? NAS Heb 10:32-36 32But remember the former days, when, after being enlightened, you endured a great conflict of sufferings, 33partly, by being made a public spectacle through reproaches and tribulations, and partly by becoming sharers with those who were so treated. 34For you showed sympathy to the prisoners, and accepted joyfully the seizure of your property, knowing that you have for yourselves a better possession and an abiding one. 35Therefore, do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. 36For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God, you may receive what was promised. NAS Finally, Jude 5-6 5Now I desire to remind you, though you know all things once for all, that the Lord, after saving a people out of the land of Egypt, subsequently destroyed those who did not believe. NAS Beginning with the Nation of Israel, Jude gives example after example of those who had been "saved" by God (in the O.T.), only to ultimately "lose their salvation." This warning he gave to N.T. believers, lest they should wind up in a similar shape. AO |
