Kalos seems to have come up with the best apparent fit to your question. Here is the NAS translation: 1 Cor 4:2-4 3 But to me it is a very small thing that I should be examined by you, or by any human court; in fact, I do not even examine myself. 4 For I am conscious of nothing against myself, yet I am not by this acquitted; but the one who examines me is the Lord. 63 | When or should we avoid unbelievers? | 1 Cor 5:9 | Aspiring Overseer | 71199
Christians are to be in the world, but not of the world. They must associate with the world to fulfill their obligation to share the gospel. Association with Christians who are practicing sin, however, is another matter. God commands them to have no association with them, other than to receive their confession and hold them accountable to their deeds of repentance. In all areas a Christian must be discerning as to their surroundings. While they might find a person who is seeking God in a tavern or strip club, their credibility as a priest of the Most High God would be severely hampered. Thus it is prudent to "just say no" to doing certain things or being certain places. There are plenty of people seeking God in more "wholesome" venues. So the bottom line is to keep associating with those of the world as long as that association will not negatively effect you or your family. Stop association with a Christian who is practicing sin, once they have been urged to stop and they refuse. Make sense? AO |

64 | What is a covering? | 1 Cor 11:3 | Aspiring Overseer | 103235
Terry and Angie, Most likely you are referring to the following: 1 Cor 11:1-4 11:1Be imitators of me, just as I also am of Christ. 2Now I praise you because you remember me in everything, and hold firmly to the traditions, just as I delivered them to you. 3But I want you to understand that Christ is the head of every man, and the man is the head of a woman, and God is the head of Christ. NAS The man is the HEAD of the woman, as Christ is the HEAD of the man. This simply describes the spiritual vertical alignment from God to mankind. Is the man the actual covering? The teaching you have received may need a bit more scrutiny. AO |

65 | Holy Spirt w/ evidence of tongues? | 1 Cor 12:10 | Aspiring Overseer | 114775
Elmo, The miraculous gifts were established for what purpose? Was it not to confirm the validity of God's Word? Once it was obvious throughout the world that His word was the truth, there was no need for the confirmation. Thus we see even Paul's ability to use the gifts wane until they were no more. The "partial" that he mentions to the Corinthians is the need of these gifts to accompany and thereby confirm God's Word until the written form of God's Word was in place. That is "the perfect" and is, of course, here today. Complete, perfect and unchanging in every detail. As an aside, if tongues or healing existed today there would be 100 percent sucess in curing the sick and all tongues could be validated as an intelligable language. Even if we go with the suggestion that the "tongues of angels" in 1 Co 13:1, is a language unknown to man, Paul still commands that they not be spoken publically (1 Co 14:28) if there is no interpreter. This likely was a safeguard against those in the body who did not truely have the gift of tongues, but felt compelled to display it. To falsify the gift and bring others into their sin would corrupt the body, thus Paul directed it only be done in private. How someone desires to worship God in private is upon their own head. This was always the case in the NT and remains so today. AO |

66 | Why so blind? | 1 Cor 13:12 | Aspiring Overseer | 91675
GeorJoy, 1) Satan. Matt 7:15-23 15"Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. 16"You will know them by their fruits. Grapes are not gathered from thorn bushes, nor figs from thistles, are they? 17"Even so, every good tree bears good fruit; but the bad tree bears bad fruit. 18"A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, nor can a bad tree produce good fruit. 19"Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20"So then, you will know them by their fruits. 21"Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven; but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven. 22"Many will say to Me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?' 23"And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.' NAS Isa 56:11 11And the dogs are greedy, they are not satisfied. And they are shepherds who have no understanding; They have all turned to their own way, Each one to his unjust gain, to the last one. NAS Mark 12:32-33 32And the scribe said to Him, "Right, Teacher, You have truly stated that He is One; and there is no one else besides Him; 33and to love Him with all the heart and with all the understanding and with all the strength, and to love one's neighbor as himself, is much more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices. " NAS Rom 1:31-32 31without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful; NAS James 3:13-14 13Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show by his good behavior his deeds in the gentleness of wisdom. 14But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, do not be arrogant and so lie against the truth. NAS What about religious fanatics? Prov 18:2 2A fool does not delight in understanding, But only in revealing his own mind. NAS 2) The gospel is hidden to pagans: 2 Cor 4:2-4 3And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, 4in whose case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving, that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. 67 | who should speak in tounges? | 1 Cor 14:22 | Aspiring Overseer | 96413
Tongues were one of the miraculous signs that were given to confirm the spoken word was from God. As Christians in the first century received the knowledge of God miraculously, they already understood the master plan of God and were able to judge the spoken and written word by that standard. Pagans could not, so God gave the temporary gift of tongues so that a pagan could hear the word in their own language and, realize that the event was miraculous and must therefore be the truth. Once the perfect came, the miraculous was no longer needed or desired by God. It was then the believer's duty to study the written Word so they would accurately handle the truth and so prove their understanding. AO |

69 | Should women be allowed to preach? | Galatians | Aspiring Overseer | 50215
Grace, You have been given these verses, previously, but with considerable effort to twist their meaning to conform to the world's standard. Try reading these is context (I have included most, but not all) and pray for guidance. 1. Women are not to speak in worship: 1 Cor 14:34-35 34Let the women keep silent in the churches; for they are not permitted to speak, but let them subject themselves, just as the Law also says. 35And if they desire to learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is improper for a woman to speak in church. NAS 2. Women may teach women, but not men. 1 Tim 2:11-15 11Let a woman quietly receive instruction with entire submissiveness. 12But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet. 13For it was Adam who was first created, and then Eve. 14And it was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman being quite deceived, fell into transgression. 15But women shall be preserved through the bearing of children if they continue in faith and love and sanctity with self-restraint. 72 | denominations. | Eph 4:3 | Aspiring Overseer | 148784
Ed, Consider these verses and the underlying concepts with respect to denominations: 1 Cor 14:30-33 31For you can all prophesy one by one, so that all may learn and all may be exhorted; 32and the spirits of prophets are subject to prophets; 33for God is not a God of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints. NAS God is a logical being, not a promoter of confusion (v. 33). 2 Peter 1:20-21 20But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one's own interpretation, 21for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God. NAS Scripture is not a mater of one's own interpretation. It is what it is! We must read and understand scripture literally without regard to our current social norms. It must make sense and have but one meaning! Gal 1:11-12 11For I would have you know, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according to man. 12For I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ. NAS Paul was taught directly by Christ and Christians are to follow Paul as he followed Christ. Did Paul support any denomination, either Catholic or Protestant? Paul specifically rebuked Christians who sought to form denominations as noted in 1 Cor 1:13. John 12:44-13:1 44And Jesus cried out and said, "He who believes in Me does not believe in Me, but in Him who sent Me. 45"And he who beholds Me beholds the One who sent Me. 46"I have come as light into the world, that everyone who believes in Me may not remain in darkness. 47"And if anyone hears My sayings, and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world. 48"He who rejects Me, and does not receive My sayings, has one who judges him; the word I spoke is what will judge him at the last day. 49"For I did not speak on My own initiative, but the Father Himself who sent Me has given Me commandment, what to say, and what to speak. 50"And I know that His commandment is eternal life; therefore the things I speak, I speak just as the Father has told Me." NAS Jesus spoke only what God the Father gave Him. Paul instructed only as Christ instructed him. There was no difference of opinion between God the Father and Jesus, as there was no difference of opinion between Jesus and Paul. Phil 1:27-28 27Only conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ; so that whether I come and see you or remain absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel; 28in no way alarmed by your opponents-- which is a sign of destruction for them, but of salvation for you, and that too, from God. NAS Paul instructed the Christians of that age; Christians who in some cases had actually seen Jesus, that they should be of the same mind. Where does Paul, or any Old or New Testament writer authorize the choice of choosing the denomination of your choice? Did God later authorize this practice? Jesus said that a kingdom divided against itself is laid waste. He also prayed for unity for His disciples. Paul also instructed Christians at great length not to be divided in spiritual matters: 1 Cor 1:10 10Now I exhort you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all agree, and there be no divisions among you, but you be made complete in the same mind and in the same judgment. NAS We must conclude that denominations did not originate from God. Let’s continue to ask God for the truth; reasoning with one another; and God will be faithful. AO |

73 | What exactly is predestination? | 1 Thess 5:17 | Aspiring Overseer | 49742
God knows what choices we will make, but this does not negate our requirement to choose. Christians continue to make those choices throughout their lives; praying always for wisdom; working out their salvation in accordance with the will of God and thereby proving themselves to be His disciples. Limiting salvation to only a predetermined few is inconsistent with God's master plan of free will. Keep praying for God's help and God will lead you to a Christian for the answers. |

74 | Rule or Ideal? | 1 Tim 3:2 | Aspiring Overseer | 130091
Doc, Here are my "two cents" regarding the passages you reference: 1 Tim 3:1-8 3:1 It is a trustworthy statement: if any man aspires to the office of overseer, it is a fine work he desires to do. 2 An overseer, then, must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, prudent, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, 3 not addicted to wine or pugnacious, but gentle, uncontentious, free from the love of money. 4 He must be one who manages his own household well, keeping his children under control with all dignity 5(but if a man does not know how to manage his own household, how will he take care of the church of God?); 6 and not a new convert, lest he become conceited and fall into the condemnation incurred by the devil. 7 And he must have a good reputation with those outside the church, so that he may not fall into reproach and the snare of the devil. NAS Titus 1:5-9 5 For this reason I left you in Crete, that you might set in order what remains, and appoint elders in every city as I directed you, 6 namely, if any man be above reproach, the husband of one wife, having children who believe, not accused of dissipation or rebellion. 7 For the overseer must be above reproach as God's steward, not self-willed, not quick-tempered, not addicted to wine, not pugnacious, not fond of sordid gain, 8 but hospitable, loving what is good, sensible, just, devout, self-controlled, 9 holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, that he may be able both to exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict. NAS What did Paul mean when he wrote of an elder being the "husband of one wife" and should this change with the norms of society? Addressing the later first, I would offer that since God does not change, those standards must remain unchanged from Paul’s original instruction. Paul’s instruction in both instances refers to men who are currently married to the only wife they have ever known. A single man could dearly love his mother, and be righteous in all other respects, yet he would not meet God’s standard as an elder. Conversely, a man who has been married and divorced has also had two wives. He would also fail to meet the standard. Why would God be so specific? My opinion was His desire for perfection within His church. The primary responsibility of an elder is to protect the congregation. As the church is to be protected from wolves in sheep’s clothing, so must the shepherds prove themselves to be the most capable and experienced men. Secondly, they set the standard for other men to follow, regardless whether those men may ever be elders themselves. They are the role models for the congregation. For contemplation and discussion at a later time, we should also consider these points: -Elders are appointed by the entire congregation with total agreement -Elders exist only where there are at least two qualified men -The children of elders must all be Christians -Elders must have the experience of converting people to the faith -An elder’s household must be run in an orderly manner -Elders must continue to actively teach -An elder’s reputation outside the church must be congruent with that within AO |

75 | fall upward? | 1 Tim 4:1 | Aspiring Overseer | 33339
Take heart, my friend, you are accurate in your reading of scripture. The verse you quote is just one of many which clearly state that Christians can and have lost their salvation through disobedience to God. The parable of the sower does not talk about pagans, does it? No, it speaks of Christians in each instance. Similarly, the apostle Paul, personally trained by Christ, was concerned that he might himself become disqualified, even after he had preached to others. So much so, that he had to buffet his body daily to make it his slave. If Paul was concerned with losing his salvation, should not we be even more concerned? Lastly, the creme de-la-creme, the passage mainstream denominations love to avoid, Hebrews 6:4-8. Heb 6:4-8 4For in the case of those who have once been enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly gift and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit, 5and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, 6and then have fallen away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God, and put Him to open shame. 7For ground that drinks the rain which often falls upon it and brings forth vegetation useful to those for whose sake it is also tilled, receives a blessing from God; 8but if it yields thorns and thistles, it is worthless and close to being cursed, and it ends up being burned. NAS How can a person be enlightened; taste the heavenly gift and be a partaker of the Holy Spirit and not be considered a Christian? This is a theological exercise that is critical to the defense of all the response you've received, but will take some rather confusing and emotional arguements (and a surrender of clear, simple logic) to accept. |

NAS James 1:12 12Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life, which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. NAS John 3:35-36 36"He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him." NAS Heb 5:9 9And having been made perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation, NAS Heb 3:12-19 12Take care, brethren, lest there should be in any one of you an evil, unbelieving heart, in falling away from the living God. 13But encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called "Today," lest any one of you be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. 14For we have become partakers of Christ, if we hold fast the beginning of our assurance firm until the end; 15while it is said, "Today if you hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts, as when they provoked Me." 16For who provoked Him when they had heard? Indeed, did not all those who came out of Egypt led by Moses? 17And with whom was He angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness? 18And to whom did He swear that they should not enter His rest, but to those who were disobedient? 19And so we see that they were not able to enter because of unbelief (disobedience). NAS 2 Peter 2:20-22 20For if after they have escaped the defilements of the world by the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and are overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first. 21For it would be better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn away from the holy commandment delivered to them. 22It has happened to them according to the true proverb, "A dog returns to its own vomit," and, "A sow, after washing, returns to wallowing in the mire." NAS James 5:19-20 19My brethren, if any among you strays from the truth, and one turns him back, 20let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death, and will cover a multitude of sins. NAS He 10:26-31 26For if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27but a certain terrifying expectation of judgment, and the fury of a fire which will consume the adversaries. 28Anyone who has set aside the Law of Moses dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29How much severer punishment do you think he will deserve who has trampled under foot the Son of God, and has regarded as unclean the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has insulted the Spirit of grace? 30For we know Him who said, "Vengeance is Mine, I will repay." And again, "The Lord will judge His people." 31It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God. NAS Jude 3-5 3Beloved, while I was making every effort to write you about our common salvation, I felt the necessity to write to you appealing that you contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints. 4For certain persons have crept in unnoticed, those who were long beforehand marked out for this condemnation, ungodly persons who turn the grace of our God into licentiousness and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ. 5Now I desire to remind you, though you know all things once for all, that the Lord, after saving a people out of the land of Egypt, subsequently destroyed those who did not believe. NAS ROM 11:17-24 17But if some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild olive, were grafted in among them and became partaker with them of the rich root of the olive tree, 18do not be arrogant toward the branches; but if you are arrogant, remember that it is not you who supports the root, but the root supports you. 19You will say then, "Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in." 20Quite right, they were broken off for their unbelief, but you stand by your faith. Do not be conceited, but fear; 21for if God did not spare the natural branches, neither will He spare you. 22Behold then the kindness and severity of God; to those who fell, severity, but to you, God's kindness, if you continue in His kindness; otherwise you also will be cut off. 23And they also, if they do not continue in their unbelief, will be grafted in; for God is able to graft them in again. 24For if you were cut off from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and were grafted contrary to nature into a cultivated olive tree, how much more shall these who are the natural branches be grafted into their own olive tree? Kate, The point of the "mystery" (and it is a mystery, contrary to what some say) is to fulfill the Master Plan of God so that only those who are seeking shall understand. God only rewards those desiring to put forth the effort to serve Him. That means God's Master Plan will not be handed to everyone on a silver platter! That service to God begins with believing He exists, which you apparently do to some extent. Your next step is to pray for guidance. God will hear your prayer and send you the appropriate teacher. Above all, remain skeptical of what you are taught and reason through every point. I am at your service if you wish to discuss this in more detail. AO |

80 | Miracles and Consequences of Sin | Heb 1:1 | Aspiring Overseer | 189532
God no longer needs to impart miraculous occurrences to confirm His plan for mankind as it is forever preserved, accurate and complete, in the Bible. 2 Corinthians 5:6-8 6 Therefore, being always of good courage, and knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord-- 7 for we WALK BY FAITH, NOT BY SIGHT-- 8 we are of good courage, I say, and prefer rather to be absent from the body and to be at home with the Lord. (Emphasis added) NAS 1 Corinthians 13:8-11 8 Love never fails; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away. 9 For we know in part, and we prophesy in part; 10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will be done away. NAS As for consequences, they have sometimes been forgiven, but not always. God desires you to learn from your mistakes, just as any parent. Best regards, AO |
