1 | MARK 16:16: Was it perverted? | Bible general Archive 2 | Aspiring Overseer | 101805
You are on the mark! (No pun intended..) As a side note, Mark 16:9-20 is not contained in the Vatican and Sinaitic manuscripts, however, the vast majority of all other sources confirm the validity of these verses, i.e. the statement of Irenaeus (an early Christian writer about 150 AD) and most manuscripts. Additionally, the concept of Mark 16:16 is supported throughout the NT. AO |

2 | The unpardonable sin? | Bible general Archive 2 | Aspiring Overseer | 101907
Momma, Sin is sin. I am not supporting fornication, as you seem to believe. Your example merely asked if it was wrong for a man and a woman to have sexual relations without a legal marriage certificate. Consider when God considers a man and woman married. Would it be when they had relations or when they received a piece of paper. From your example there is no sin. The others are very black and white. If a person refuses to turn from sin they are in rebellion and in default with God. Should you pray for someone who mocks God by continuing to willfully disobey? That is the unpardonable sin. AO |

3 | How many in upper room?? | Bible general Archive 2 | Aspiring Overseer | 115256
Arrow, Remember that the chapter and verses we have in our translations today were not in the original letter. Keeping that in mind, Acts 1:26 specifically identifies the apostles. Acts 2:1-15 continues the narrative concerning the same people (and not necessarily the same or next day). How do we know the "they" in Acts 2:4 were not the 120? Aside from using proper grammatical rules, we must acknowledge that Jesus had disciples from all of the various regions He visited during His ministry. Acts 1:14 also tells us some of the disciples present were women. With these points in mind consider Acts 2:7 and Acts 2:14-15. One tells us those speaking in tongues were “all” Galileans. Would all of the 120 been Galileans? We know the apostles were. Were only Galilean disciples faithful to Jesus or would the 120 include Judean and Perean Jews, as well? Secondly, Peter acknowledges those mocked in verse 13 were all "men". If 120 people spoke in tongues, might it been unusual to separate the 12 from them so quickly and simultaneously identify the group displaying this miraculous gift as consisting solely of men? Why would Peter leave out the other 108? Was he a male chauvinist? Maybe he desired public attention only be focused on the apostles? Could it be 108 were not present? AO |

4 | Is the mind the battle ground? | Bible general Archive 2 | Aspiring Overseer | 138581
Majestic, There are actually many scientific and historical proofs found within scripture that confirm for the Christian the validity of the Bible. There are no known scientific facts that run counter to anything in scripture. Whether the transmission of disease by germs, the incompatibility of flesh between animals and humans or the knowledge of a round Earth, the Bible disclosed all these things centuries before they were ever discovered by scientists. What you require is an understanding of God's Master Plan. There is only one way for it to be received. Ask God to help and He will provide you with the messenger. Your job will then be to analyze all that is taught so you are confident in your own mind that the information is correct. Ultimately, you must become an independent thinker within the framework of Scripture so that you can share your knowledge with others. Radical, yes; fanatical, no. Keep praying for guidance and God will be faithful. Best regards, AO |

5 | What is considered an Idol | Bible general Archive 2 | Aspiring Overseer | 140716
Noveta, In the verse you give, God provides several distinct and separate commands. That we shall not make an idol is one command; that we are not to worship them is another. Thus the use of the object in worship is not necessary for it to be sin. Regardless whether we actually pray to the object, the object is not condoned by God. One reference states: While we may not make or bow down to a statue, we must be constantly on guard that we let nothing come between us and God (i.e. disregard for His commands—my emphasis!). As soon as anything does, that thing is an idol. In addition to material objects such as houses, land, and cars, idols can be people, popular heroes, or those whom we love. Objects of worship can even include things like fame, reputation, hobbies, pride, and deeds done in the name of the Lord. Idolatry is a dangerous and deceitful sin. No wonder prophets preached against it so often and so strongly.” (from Nelson's Illustrated Bible Dictionary) (Copyright (C) 1986, Thomas Nelson Publishers) NT Scripture is clear that God still prohibits the manufacture and use of any manmade item possessing, even simply, a spiritual meaning (Acts 17:29; 19:24-25; 1Jo5:21). Statues or images of Jesus, Mary or angels are clearly not desired by God (Deu 4:15-16; LK 11:27-28; Col 2:18-19), but even less obvious idols such as "WWJD" adornments and "Christian" fish are spoken against in scripture by the necessary inference that God does not desire His people to use symbols of any kind to proclaim their righteousness (MT6:1). We need only to remember Jesus' rebuke of the scribes and Pharisees. (MK12:38-40; MT23:1-7) Can a person seer their conscience to convince themselves that a religious image is “OK”? Of course, that is true, however, it does not change how God views the situation. Best regards, AO |

6 | Scriptural support? | Bible general Archive 2 | Aspiring Overseer | 140756
Tim, The scripture references apply to idols; the topic of this discussion. You believe that religious symbols made into jewelry are excluded yet offer no scriptural support. Whether "WWJD" braclets, "christian fish" or a 6" rapper cross pendant, they all are religious symbols designed to carry a message, created by man and subject to MT 23:5. In the end, Christians must follow scripture in handling the topic rather than public opinion. AO |

7 | Be serious about this- | Bible general Archive 1 | Aspiring Overseer | 56416
Hi CincyBaby, We will not find a set age as each person is different, but logically a person can only be accountable to God once they are able to obey all of God's commands. Thus if you can pray, worship and teach at age 12, so be it. Generally, however, you expect this level of maturity and acceptance somewhere after age 18. Hope this helps! AO |

8 | Can true Christians lose their faith? | Bible general Archive 1 | Aspiring Overseer | 88406
Yampa, Should you "quit being a deep philosophical thinker" or reason with God? Isaiah 1:18 18"Come now, and let us reason together," Says the LORD, Do not give in to those who would encourage you to "go with the flow". Those people will not be present with you at the judgement seat. Here are but a few scriptures that show it is possible to depart from the faith--which is another way of saying "lose your salvation." And these are true departures, not situations where the people were only pretending to be saved. Heb 2:1 2:1For this reason we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. NAS Heb 3:12 12Take care, brethren, lest there should be in any one of you an evil, unbelieving heart, in falling away from the living God. NAS 2 Peter 2:20-22 20For if after they have escaped the defilements of the world by the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and are overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first. 21For it would be better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn away from the holy commandment delivered to them. 22It has happened to them according to the true proverb, "A dog returns to its own vomit," and, "A sow, after washing, returns to wallowing in the mire." NAS James 5:19-20 19My brethren, if any among you strays from the truth, and one turns him back, 20let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death, and will cover a multitude of sins. NAS Heb 10:26-29 26For if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27but a certain terrifying expectation of judgment, and the fury of a fire which will consume the adversaries. 28Anyone who has set aside the Law of Moses dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29How much severer punishment do you think he will deserve who has trampled under foot the Son of God, and has regarded as unclean the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has insulted the Spirit of grace? NAS Heb 10:32-36 32But remember the former days, when, after being enlightened, you endured a great conflict of sufferings, 33partly, by being made a public spectacle through reproaches and tribulations, and partly by becoming sharers with those who were so treated. 34For you showed sympathy to the prisoners, and accepted joyfully the seizure of your property, knowing that you have for yourselves a better possession and an abiding one. 35Therefore, do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. 36For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God, you may receive what was promised. NAS Finally, Jude 5-6 5Now I desire to remind you, though you know all things once for all, that the Lord, after saving a people out of the land of Egypt, subsequently destroyed those who did not believe. NAS Beginning with the Nation of Israel, Jude gives example after example of those who had been "saved" by God (in the O.T.), only to ultimately "lose their salvation." This warning he gave to N.T. believers, lest they should wind up in a similar shape. AO |

Yampa, I had to write again, because of the irony found in another posting to you: "Despite the advise that some would offer, place your trust in the word of Christ and lean not to your own understanding (i.e. human wisdom). True reason will confirm the truth of Scripture, not refute it." This quote followed several lines of opinion (i. e. human wisdom)! "As to others who rip verses fom there context so as to support their personal doctrines...If you truly are among the flock of God, you will not follow the voice of the stranger." If this is in reference to my original post, which consisted primarily of verses, is the above writer telling you not to read scripture with understanding, but to follow doctrine that is confusing in the first place? Who actually is proposing the "ripping"? I would laugh if it were not so serious! P. S. I am anxious to read your response to my original post. Keeping praying for guidance! AO |

11 | Can mankind change God's plan? | Bible general Archive 1 | Aspiring Overseer | 90115
Mike, Say someone works for a company whose "master plan" is to make a profit. That person can either decide to do good work and benefit or do shoddy work and suffer the consequences. Either way the company's master plan has stayed the same. They are still there to make a profit. Additionally, why would this employee, who knows that his company's motives are pure and that his work there supports himself and his family, fail to live up to his end of the employment contract? Is it not within the employee's scope of responsibility to serve his employer as his employer directs? Why does the employee decide to jeopardize his own welfare? Why would God require anything less for His creation? AO |

13 | are we saved by grace or baptism? | NT general Archive 1 | Aspiring Overseer | 56789
Heb 5:7-10 7In the days of His flesh, He offered up both prayers and supplications with loud crying and tears to the One able to save Him from death, and He was heard because of His piety. 8Although He was a Son, He learned obedience from the things which He suffered. 9And having been made perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation, 10being designated by God as a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek. NAS Christ is the source of eternal salvation. Your question is by what means can a person become party to the New Covenant to receive this salvation. God is the author and principle party of the covenant. Christians are the recipients, IF they chose to abide by His requirements (commands). Jesus obeyed His Father's commands and was "heard because of his piety". So too must Christians obey Christ's commands; baptism and Lord's Supper, included. |

14 | Is it a sin to be in debt? | NT general Archive 1 | Aspiring Overseer | 71058
Martha, The love of money is A root of all sorts of evil, but not the commonly misquoted "root of ALL evil". 1 Tim 6:10 10For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith, and pierced themselves with many a pang. NAS It is fine to use credit, but you must be aware of your limits. Do not forget that you are to set aside as you may prosper. This does not mean to save if you have anything left over at the end of the month, but to set aside each week some portion of the income you receive. AO |

15 | How to stop | NT general Archive 1 | Aspiring Overseer | 71124
Martha, Do you have a budget? If not, pencil one out tonight for all the areas which you know require money each month. Compare that figure to your income and hopefully you will have a surplus. If not, you must find ways to reduce your expenses. Do not use your credit cards. If you do not have the item planned for in your budget, do not buy it! There are many ways you can structure your finances to live within your means and be a good steward for God's resources. Until you can sit down with some one, however, think about what causes you to spend money and what you normally purchase. Controlling spending will be the key to solving your problem. AO |

16 | Christmas-Is It Christian? | NT general Archive 1 | Aspiring Overseer | 106705
Hi Tess, Here are some notes from the other day you might find helpful: Christmas is a holiday created by man to celebrate the birth of Christ or, from a secular perspective, to enjoy the presence of family and friends. You ask if it is biblical, but I believe you already have your answer. God commands us throughout scripture not to add or take away from His word. Questions to consider: Would a holiday created by mankind, regardless of intent, be desired by God? Does God command Christians to honor Christ's birth? To what extent can a Christian participate (and promote) man-made practices to honor Christ, which are not directed by God? Some other food for thought: Why do many churches display nativity scenes? The scripture in Matthew which refers to the magi does not list a number nor does it allow for them to have visited Him in the manger. If both of these are distortions to fit the worldly religious version of Christmas, why would we expect anything different in the handling of scripture concerning salvation? P.S. What does Paul mean when he rebukes the Corinthians for naming themselves in 1CO1:10-13? How do you think this applies to JW's? AO |

17 | Doesn't NT forbid all images-somewhere? | NT general Archive 1 | Aspiring Overseer | 132632
Dear Student, You are correct in stating you have not found anything in the NT instructing God's people not to possess or make images or sculptures of "any" kind, because God is only concerned with those images which represent spiritual things. Secular art or photographs are not a concern to God if they do not relate to spiritual matters. NT Scripture is clear that God still prohibits the manufacture and use of any manmade item possessing a spiritual meaning (Acts 17:29; 19:24-25; 1Jo5:21). (MK12:38-40; MT23:1-7) Though the majority may not agree with this viewpoint, neither did the majority survive the great flood. In the end, you must decide for yourself. Keeping praying for help as you seek an understanding of God’s word. AO |

Mike, Here are a few verses which reference the physical brothers and sisters of Jesus. Matthew 13:54-56 55 "Is not this the carpenter's son? Is not His mother called Mary, and His brothers, James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? 56 "And His sisters, are they not all with us? Where then did this man get all these things?" NAS Mark 6:3 3 "Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and brother of James, and Joses, and Judas, and Simon? Are not His sisters here with us?" And they took offense at Him. NAS Luke 8:19-21 19 And His mother and brothers came to Him, and they were unable to get to Him because of the crowd. 20 And it was reported to Him, "Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, wishing to see You." 21 But He answered and said to them, "My mother and My brothers are these who hear the word of God and do it." NAS John 2:12 12 After this He went down to Capernaum, He and His mother, and His brothers, and His disciples; and there they stayed a few days. NAS John 7:2-5 3 His brothers therefore said to Him, "Depart from here, and go into Judea, that Your disciples also may behold Your works which You are doing. 4 "For no one does anything in secret, when he himself seeks to be known publicly. If You do these things, show Yourself to the world." 5 For not even His brothers were believing in Him. NAS 1 Corinthians 9:4-5 5 Do we not have a right to take along a believing wife, even as the rest of the apostles, and the brothers of the Lord, and Cephas? NAS Galatians 1:19-20 19 But I did not see any other of the apostles except James, the Lord's brother. NAS As for becoming a priest, I recommend you continue to pray to God for help. He will send you someone who will lead you to the truth. AO |
