361 | Shekina Glory Means ? What is origin of | Bible general Archive 3 | jlhetrick | 163282
Hello, Your right, the actual word is not found in the bible. Check this out for some insight. SHEKINAH SHECHINAH; SHEKINAH Not found in the Bible but in the targums. From shakan "to dwell," from whence comes mishkan "the tabernacle." God's visible manifestation in a cloudy pillar and fire; the glorious light, enveloped in a cloud and thence bursting forth at times (Ex 16:7-10), especially over the mercy-seat or capporeth. (from Fausset's Bible Dictionary, Electronic Database Copyright (c)1998, 2003 by Biblesoft) CLOUD, PILLAR OF PILLAR OF CLOUD. The symbol of God's presence with Israel, guiding them from Egypt to Canaan (Ex 13:21-22). It became fire by night. So in the Red Sea it gave light to the escaping Israelites, while interposing between them and the pursuing Egyptians, to whom it" was a cloud and darkness." When Israel was appointed to rest in any place, it rested on the tabernacle over the mercy-seat, and was named by later Jews the Shekinah (from Fausset's Bible Dictionary, Electronic Database Copyright (c)1998, 2003 by Biblesoft) Hope this helps, Jeff |

362 | Adultery, desertion, deception | 1 Cor 7:14 | jlhetrick | 163253
Hello bitsy, You married an unbeliever which presented opportunity for disaster. 2Co 6:14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? 2Co 6:15 And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? 2Co 6:16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 2Co 6:17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, You have biblical grounds for divorce according to your account here. But that doesn't necessarily mean you should divorce. Mat 5:32 But I say to you, any man who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, causes her to commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery." What you need to do is seek the counsel of your church leadership. With love, Jeff Seek the advise and guidance of your church leadership. Jeff |

363 | Can you please explain tithing? | Deut 14:1 | jlhetrick | 163223
Hello Lisandra, I'm sure others will have much more insight regarding this issue but I saw your question unanswered and wanted to give you some thought to start with. Deut 14: 23-25 seems to shead some light on this. It appears that your tithe is meant to be given to a specific place chosen by God. We know in that day there was a single temple where the priest of the tribe of Levite carried out the practices of leading worship and ceremonial sacrifice. The tribe of Levite, having the responsibilities of the priesthood were to receive from the tithe of the other tribes. This was so that their daily lives were spent with the business of the temple and not out trying to make a living off the land. The tithe served the purpose of both providing for the Levite's needs as well as obedience to God in recognition that all the Israelites had came from Him in the first place. With this in mind, the tithe continues to serve the same purpose. It provides for those who devote themselves full time to ministry and the overall work of the church, as well as the chruch member's responsibility to the work to giving back to God what is already His, not to mention we are commanded to do it. Finally, since Jesus finished the work and negated the need for ongoing sacrifices, and as christianity spread worldwide, God the Father no longer dwells in a single holy place on earth. We worship, as you know, in churches all over the world. Why the long-winded attempt to explain? If you go back to the verses in Deut. you will see reference to "the place he will choose" (he of course referring to God). Well we know that He no longer dwells in a particular place on earth but His Spirit dwells in each Chriatian. But is there still a "place" He has chosen. I argue yes. For you it is the church you are a member of. God places each of us within the church body where "He chooses". Where He want's us to be. Therefore, I believe that our first responsibility is to our local church where we are members. A key thought on tithing is that you, the one who tithes, has no control over what is God's. That has been left to the priests (or pastors). I believe it is wrong to "cut out" your tith and then take it on yourself to evaluate the need and allocate it accordingly. That is God's tithe and He has given the church the responsibility of managing it. One final thought. You will see the word tith and offering used interchangeably in the bible. But if you can imagin your tithe as the ten percent you must give, and your offering as anything above that your delima may go away. That is, give your tithe to your local church who depends on it to operate. Where you see other needs, give what you can as an offering. God will bless both. Hope this helps, With love, Jeff |

364 | God Question | Rom 10:17 | jlhetrick | 163181
Hello again Rick, You presented a honest question and there has been several responses and some ongoing dialogue. I'm not seeing you respond, still, I hope your following along. I would be interested in knowing if any of the responses have helped. I wanted to write again directly to you to help you understand something. Joel seemed to think that something in my response to you was intended to be mean spirited or insulting. I want to assure you that nothing in my responses was intended for that purpose. Your question seems honest and you are apparently seeking the truth. I have and will continue to pray for you that you will accept the truth that has already been revealed to you as you read through the bible. I would like to suggest now that instead of simply reading through it from cover to cover, you begin to study what it has to say and think about how it applies to you specifically and how you live your life. I would recommend that you start in the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John in the New Testament) because it is there that you will find the story and the ministry of the Savior clearly told. As for the issue of "joy". I did not intend to imply that the christian life is void of it. It is not. Joy is a regular part of the christian life. It's just that it is not the qualifier. Which brings me to my final thought here. Joy and all the other blessings of God do not come through hearing or knowing about God. They come as a result of a personal relationship with Him. Your original question asked a most important question. "Is there a God". There is a God and only one. He is the God of the bible. But you must believe and accept Him or you are lost forever. Heb 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. With prayer and love, Jeff |

365 | Trying to go straight | Rom 12:2 | jlhetrick | 163057
Hi Prov, The same way a heterosexual guy gets the sinful, immoral, heterosexual thoughts out of his head. By being transformed by the power of God's word and His Spirit. As a heterosexual man of only 40 years of age, and having been a Christian for a long time now, I can say that it has not been a matter of instant success for me. I believe God can instantly and permanently remove these things from us but I believe that in most cases He does not. Being obedient to Him is a matter of choice followed by action. A lifestyle of obedience is learned and practiced and helps in the building of our relationship with God. You already know that the homosexual lifestyle is sinful, as is heterosexual relations outside of marriage. You now have to make the choice to repent, that is, turn away from it asking forgiveness. Next you have to ask the Lord for strength and then resist the temptation ongoing, everyday. As you become closer to the Lord and He blesses your life you will find that obeying Him becmoes easier. The thing to remember is that you do not have the strength to obey Him on your own, even if you do have the will. You have to depend on the strength that God gives you because His strength is the only hope we have if we are to truly be successful in resisting sin. I hope this is helpful. God bless you. The more time and effort we spend serving Him, the less time and effort we spend toward sin. Jeff |

366 | How to read the Bible on the web | Bible general Archive 3 | jlhetrick | 161595
Hi, You might consider investing in a bible software program for your computer. They are relatively inexpensive or you can spend a little more and get program that you can use for study which includes multiple bible versions as well as commentaries and other tools. And you don't have to log on. Also there are several free download programs. e-sword is a very good one. Jeff |

Hi ricepad, Of course the word dinosaur is not in the bible that I'm aware of. Try reading Job 40 starting with verse 15 and reading on into chapter 41. Some have said that the descriptions given there are similar to what we know about dinosaurs (as well as other living creatures like alligators, etc.) Hope this helps. Jeff |

369 | What do you think Genesis 6:1-4 means? | Gen 6:1 | jlhetrick | 161017
Hello Hana,, This is a long pondered and debated question. My concern with a question like this on the forum is that someone may offer you a definative answer when there in fact is not one. There are several different views of who the "son's of God" referred to here were. The views are too in-depth to attempt to articulate here but they range from the angels left to guard the Garden of Eden, to fallen angels to certain descendants of Adam who had different religious views. This, I believe is one of those questions that may have to be answered when we can ask Him face to face. To get a better example of the differing views I recommend a look at various commentaries covering this passage. Hope this helps, Jeff |

370 | Is belief in the bible needed to be save | NT general Archive 1 | jlhetrick | 160833
Hello hetfield, It appears that you are honestly seeking the truth here and I hope I'm right. Otherwise you would only be trying to stir controversy. Assuming you are in search of the truth let me address your post. Basically, you state that you do not believe that the bible, particularly the New Testament, is the word of God. The problem I have with your premise is that you only use the New Testament to support your belief. The scripture you referred to were all New Testament. I find it peculiar that you would do this. I believe it is important that each of us have reasonable evidence for what we "believe". You are asking for others to give that evidence but you state your own belief without offering evidence of any kind. If you are truly seeking then you must be willing to honestly evaluate the evidence. This can only be done by a real study of the New Testament which must include it's relationship to the Old Testament. What you will find among many things, is that it and the Old Testament both affirm each other. There are others that can articulate this much better than I, but the best approach I believe is for you to begin an honest study for yourself. You say you believe in God. Start your study with prayer and ask Him to show you the truth. More specifically, you asked if it is necessary to believe the bible is the word of God in order to be saved. I would ask, if salvation is not found in the bible, where would one find it? Is the New Testament to be included? Well, the Old Testament does not offer a savior, but only the promise of one. The finished work of the Savior is found in the New Testament, therefore, it must be more than just accurate and reliable. It must be absolute and trustworthy. Otherwise, we can not be sure that the promised savior was and is Jesus Christ and that he has come, died, rose, and ascended finishing the work that does save us. Simply put, witout the New Testament, we have no salvation, but only the promise of a savior to come. So, yes, we must believe the bible is the word of God because without it we have nothing to believe in. But it is not believing this that saves us, it is trusting in the truth and the gracious gift of God through Christ that it teaches us about that saves us. I hope this is helpful, Jeff |

Hello again nightjay, Just some feedback regarding posting. I noticed that your post here was actually submitted twice. Usually that's because you click the submit button twice. I have done this as well. I learned to click it once and then wait to see if it takes. sometimes it takes it a second or two to register. Anyway, I'm not complaining just letting you know. If you have it out there twice you may have two different dialogues going on that will become difficult for you to keep up with. Thanks, Jeff |

372 | David and Goliath Part 2 | 1 Sam 17:54 | jlhetrick | 160790
Hi nightjay, Good question and thoughts on this passage. Something to keep in mind while we're considering the "battles" in our lives and the faith that we fight them with. It is always imporant to remember that "winning" a battle may not always look like David's defeat over Goliath. In some cases a Christian may fail miserably at the task at hand and it may seem we have lost the fight. Our want's, desires, and own will are not always in the will of God and therefore God may not provide the way for success. When we fail we may feel that God was not there and our faith may suffer a "let down". The true battle for us is to always remain in the will of God and to depend on Him to make a way for change and success. The more we know about Him and His will for us, the better we will be at choosing battles and setting goals. Still the story of David and Goliath is a fascinating one and one that demonstrates faith well. Question: Why did God not allow a great warrior champion of Isreal to defeat Goliath? Regarding your question about David cutting the head from Goliath. A careful reading of this passage doesn't make it clear to me that Goliath was actually dead after the stone took him down. David still seemed to be in the battle as he "ran up" to take Goliath's own sword and behead him. Either way, the important thing was that David be able to prove that Goliath was dead. It was cumstomary in those days to produce the head of your enemy to prove he was dead. Notice that it was not until after Goliath's head was removed that the Philistines fled. Also see verse 54. David took the head back to Jerusalem. Imagine the courage, hope, and faith that this gave a people tormented by their enemy. It is true that Jesus said that we are to love our enemies. At the same time, war is a real thing and the children of Israel were having war made on them. God loves all people, but the day will come when He will cast many into hell. Those that chose to reject him and fight against His will and ultimately refuse the gift of grace. Hope this is helpful, Jeff |

373 | Spiritual growth. Where to go online? | Bible general Archive 3 | jlhetrick | 160712
Hello Brenda, Hope I'm not reading into your post, but is your internet search in addition to the teaching and growth you are getting from your church? If not, let me recommend that you find a good church that puts the Lord Jesus and the bible as it's priority. Also let me caution you on internet sites, even those recommended by others. There is so much out there and it is not all good. Much false teaching being disseminated out there. When you do find a site research it (try CRI "christian research institute") which is an organization that acts as a "watch dog" exposing false teachings among other things. Be on gaurd against anyone or anything that claims to be or presents as a "new movement". The true church is not in need of any new approach because the one that Christ has ordained is more than sufficient. Hope this is helpful, Jeff |

374 | Destroyed for lack of knowledge | Ps 111:10 | jlhetrick | 160611
Hi Humbled, Thanks for pointing to the article. I read it a couple of times and tend to agree with what it has to say. I think that the overall point of the article is that the church is in crisis. It is in crisis because of the lack of knowledge. It has a lack of knowledge because the truth is not being studied, learned, understood, and taught from the bible. This is not being done because there has been a decline in the way christians view God and His word. The lack of reverence, I believe, comes from a lack of fear. Modern christians seem to have no healthy fear of God. This has evolved over time and the article does a better job of explaining that process than I could here. I think of Adam and Eve. They had reverence for God and they obeyed him. But when the world around them became more desirable than the promises of God, and the lie told them that their desire was attainable, their reverence for God was compromised. No fault of God, no shortcoming or unanticipated change where He was concerned. Just man chosing to believe the world around him instead. When I write of the church and it's condition, I of course include myself. It is articles like this that help to riminde us of where we are and where we are going. But, Don't be discouraged. Individuals may be defeated on various points and the church may suffer failure from time to time. But the church of Christ will never be defeated. He will keep it and He will keep us. Matt 16:17-19 17 Jesus replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven. 18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven NIV Matt 18:14 14 In the same way your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these little ones should be lost. NIV Rev 19:7 7 Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready. KJV It is necessary for the church to go through what it is going through and we trust in the Lord to build it into the perfect bride. There is a process involved. See Matthew 13:24-43. Again, thanks for pointing to the article. Jeff |

375 | Using Love as Jesus | 2 Tim 2:15 | jlhetrick | 160519
Hello Nightjay, Sorry your post was not treated with respect, it's only your first month on the forum so get used to it. You asked for "some examples" and not a complete expository so, perhapse a simple, even trite answer may be what you are in need of. Examples that might be too often heard by some may be new to others and very helpful. Don't worry, you don't have to be a bible scholar to use the forum and benefit from it (although there are those types on the forum who believe differently). The best example of how Jesus would use His love for people today can be understood by what He has already done. He would die for us. We know that He would because we know that He did. He would heal the sick because He has compassion and though some will disagree, God still heals people. He would be mistreated and forgive His abuser without retaliation. He would respect others as created beings made in the image of God even when disagreeing with and redirecting their wrong position on issues. If you asked Him a question I don't believe He would consider it unworthy to be answered nor do I believe He would feel the need to offer a manuscript with deep theological articulations. Though it is speculation, it is possible to believe that He would answer you with kindness and love and as simply as He would know that you would need in order to understand. He might then point you to the bible and encourage you to study the issue for greater understanding. What would He say: He has already said it and it applies just as much today as ever. Read Matt. chapter 5 to get a good understanding of what Jesus has said to us and expects from us. Jesus, by His own example and words has already done and said all that He has in order to teach us what is most important and what many seem to be in most need of. Joh 15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. Hope this is helpful for "some examples". Jeff |

Hello Ashlyn, I would recommend the bible as your first resource for what God expects from you. Particularly the teachings of Jesus himself found in the Gospels, MATTHEW, MARK, LUKE, JOHN. Also read Paul's letters which are very focused on Christian responsibility regarding life-style and behavior. Personally I love the book of Romans and never get enough of reading it. Jeff |

378 | Does sin prove one is not a believer? | 1 Cor 6:9 | jlhetrick | 157830
Hi Takeupyoursword, You answer your own question within the question. The verse starts out with “do you not know that the ‘unrighteous’ and wrongdoers..” Your thought is correct regarding God’s own righteousness. Once saved, you are no longer one of the “unrighteous” nor are you a “wrongdoer” as it is presented here. Read Romans 7:15-20 carefully to get a good explanation from Paul of how and why a Christian is still capable of sinning. Notice to the obvious struggle Paul has with his own sin. The bible teaches that though we may continue to sin, we are no longer “slaves” to sin. See Romans 6:12-14. Rom 6:12-14 12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. 13 Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness. 14 For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace. NIV Before being saved, we were under the law and slaves to sin, we followed it’s tempting. After we are saved, we have the power and authority through Christ to resist temptation because sin no longer holds any authority over us. The struggle continues because we have the sin nature still in our bodies. The difference is, now we feel conviction from God, have remorse for our sin. But the guilt of that sin is no longer credited to us as Paul points out in Romans 7:20 Rom 7:20 20 Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it. NIV If one claims to be saved but lives a life dominated by sin, the question is, is he/she truly saved. Only God can answer that of another. But if you are saved, you are saved. There is nothing you or I can do to undo the greatest miracle ever accomplished by God, that is salvation. Hope this helps, Jeff |

379 | Fasting | Bible general Archive 2 | jlhetrick | 156769
Hi Mike, Yes, fasting is for today. As Hank pointed out, you can search the topic on the forum for in-depth study, however, I felt a friendly answer wouldn't hurt. As you may be aware, the book of Acts is one of the best places to go to in the bible to get a picture of the early church to include the performance of individuals and the wider church body. The following passage is an example of those in the "New Testament Church" (which continues to this day) fasting. Acts 14:23 Paul and Barnabas appointed elders for them in each church and, with prayer and FASTING , committed them to the Lord, in whom they had put their trust. NIV (emphasis added) Hope this helps, Jeff |

Hello Allmy, Hint, only click the "submit" button once when you are ready to send your question to the forum post. It your computer is slow, just wait for it to post. Regarding your question. First, what do you mean by indulge? Next, what do you mean by relationship? I'm not playing on your words here. And certainly this is a lagitimate question if you are asking (as I assume you are) what the bible has to say regarding this. Define indulge and relationship and see what we can come up with. Jeff |
