263 | Is Christmas and 25th Dec. biblical? | Bible general Archive 3 | jlhetrick | 181052
Hello UncleCnn, Welcome to the forum. Not sure what you mean by "is it Biblical". Christmas is of course the celebration of the birth of Christ. It was not celebrated as an annual holiday until around the forth or fifth century as I remember reading, and If my recollection serves me, it was not referred to as Christmas until some time after that. But the Bible certainly celebrates the birth of Christ, giving a significant amount of space in fortelling it, and telling about it. For a very rich example I would direct you to the book of Luke and just have you begin reading in the first chapter. Early in Chapter 2 you will definately see celebration taking place. As for the exact date that Christ was born, we do not know. But we won't let that stop us from recognizing :) Jeff |

264 | When is the revelation clear | Acts 17:30 | jlhetrick | 180983
Hello Finder, I believe my response should start with asking the question to you, are you saved. If you are not, then the Scriptures teach that not only have you rejected God, but you are continuing in that rejection. It's not my word that declares that ALL have rejected or sinned against God. It was and is plain in the Scriptures I posted in my previous response. Furthermore, anytime we sin, we reject God. If you can not remember sinning, take the word of God at face value and know that you have and so have I. 1John 1:10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives. (NIV) You see friend, in the passage of Romans 1:18-32 it's not teaching that the truth of God was not recognized or that the truth of God was not understood and believed, quite the opposite. Instead, it is teaching that when the truth was known, man chose his own course, rejecting God's plan. Knowing something of God and then choosing to do what is contrary to His design and plan is the rejection. Romans 1:21-23 (NIV) 21For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles." Again, you may not accept the truth that you, like every other human person besides Christ, has sinned by putting self before God; but again, the Scirptures should settle that issue as quoted above. Finder, in anticipation of your response and answer to your salvation let me say this. In saving you, God will require that you ackowledge that you are a sinner in need of salvation. As the Scripture says, if you are unable or unwilling to do this, "His word has no place in your life". I assure you that my response is sincere and I am not attempting to read into your statements. Please let me address something else you said. You wrote: "The only opportunity I am conscious of coming to know the revelation of God was after investing LOTS of time searching on the Internet since 2002 until now, and I still think I don't know everything" While there are many internet sights that I would recommend to include this one, they are no substitute for the bible itself. If you have a bible please spend more time in it with prayerful consideration vs. searching the net. If you do not have a bible email me, I will send you one. Finally, we don't need to worry ourselves with the access or ability to understand of others beyond our being obedient in "rightly dividing the word of truth" (2Tim 2:15) while proclaiming the gospel. Remember what I said in the previous post. If God intends to save the guy behind the tree at the end of that long-lost path deep in the darkest depths of the most dense jungle, He will save that one. As for the understanding; not a one of us has had the understanding until the almighty, sovereign God gave it. Hope my responses continue to be helpful. God bless, Jeff PS. my email address is shown in my user profile. |

265 | How deep can the Gospel go | Acts 17:30 | jlhetrick | 180907
Hello Finder, Allow me to add something to the conversation please. I believe that when we consider the passage in Romans in the wider context of what the Scriptures teach (to include immediate context) I think it begins to make more sense. The passage in Romans isn't speaking to salvation but rather damnation, at least the utter fallen state of mankind. I'm not seeing it taught here at all that God's revelation in nature is what saves. Salvation comes by God's grace, through faith in Christ and by no other means as the Scriptures plainly teach. Later in the book (ch. 5) we see that the wrath spoken of in chapter 1 is something man can be saved from, being "justified by His blood (Romans 5:9). The next two verses make it very clear. "Rom 5:10-11 10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. 11 More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation. (ESV) "..for while we were enemies..."(v. 10). When were we enemies? It's spelled out very clearly in Romans 1:18-32. The problem isn't in that some may never have the opportunity to here the gospel of Jesus Christ. The problem is that all, ALL, have had the truth of God revealed to them and all, including you and me, have rejected that. So, verse 20, we are all without excuse (Romans 3:23) So reconciliation is necessary! And how is that? Clearly presented as quoted above in Romans 5:10-11. It is by His death that we are reconciled and His resurrection that we have eternal life. God uses people to preach the Gospel. As a result, we might tend to give ourselves too much credit. God's saving a soul is not, and has never been dependent on someone hacking through just the right jungle trail to happenstance uppon the poor waiting lost soul there behind the tree. The effectual calling that results in reconciliation and eternal life is that calling of God alone. He may use a man to initiate it, but that poor creature does not effect it. Salvation belongs to the Lord, and to those He justly chooses in grace. If it were anything else, the cross would be of no use. Ours is to be obedient, trusting that He will complete His plan justly. And He is faithful. Hope this helps some, Jeff |

Hello Wars, Welcome to the Forum. A church is a building; especially for Christian public worship (Webster) As Christians we also refer to the entire body of believers in Christ as THE church. That is, the Church established by Christ and not man; made up of all persons who have been called by God and saved. Christ is the head of the Christian Church and His word, the Holy Bible is the authoraty from which church doctrine is established. While the true Church (body of believers) has many different denominations (i.e., Methodist, Baptist, etc.) none of those denominations is the church any more than any human person is. Hope this will help. Jeff |

269 | how do you deal with seeing demons | Bible general Archive 3 | jlhetrick | 180376
Anto, You should go to your medical doctor. "Seeing demons" may be a symptom of a medical condition (such as a problem with your Thyroid glands) that might be corrected with appropriate treatment. It may also be a symptom of a psychiatric condition, in which case a psychiatrist can assess the symptoms and prescribe medication(s) that might alleviate or decrease the symptoms. In either case, a potential medical cause must be ruled out first. Jeff |

270 | Verse"Quitters not worthy o'heaven"HELP | NT general Archive 1 | jlhetrick | 180278
Hello 2Tim, Your probably thinking about this passage: "Heb 6:4-6 4 It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit, 5 who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age, 6 if they fall away, to be brought back to repentance, because to their loss they are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace." NIV But in your question you say the person is a christian. A ture Christian is someone who is saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. Such a person, I believe, could never turn away. The grace of God and the promise He makes in His word, sealed with the Holy Spirit is sufficient to ensure this. You might think of Judas Iscariot. He was certainly enlighted having walked with Christ. He "tasted the heavenly gift.." and "shared in the Holy Spirit" and "tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age.." Remember. Judas walked with Christ, heard Him teach and was even sent out, apparently, as one of the twelve sent out to preach and they cast out demons and healed the sick (Mark 6:7). The Scriptures are clear that Judas wasn't saved, however, so he was not a Christian. He must have believed on some level and even had a degree of faith; but he never accepted and surrendered to Christ. His faith was not a saving faith. Hope this helps, Jeff |

271 | Will there be marriages in heaven? | Matt 22:30 | jlhetrick | 180161
Hello dd, It's an honest question that I believe most of us have asked. To be sure we know the answer is no, we will not marry, we will not be given in marriage, and if we die married we will no longer be married in glory. Along with what Humbledbyhisgrace has pointed out in the Matthew passage, we see that the institution of marriage, created by God, is dissolved at the moment one of the married couple dies. Rom 7:2 2 Thus a married woman is bound by law to her husband while he lives, but if her husband dies she is released from the law of marriage. ESV So there should be no confusion about whether a married living person will be married in Heaven. We won't be. " But, in the resurrection, there is no occasion for marriage; whether in glorified bodies there will be any distinction of sexes some too curiously dispute (the ancients are divided in their opinions about it); but, whether there will be a distinction or not, it is certain that there will be no conjunction; where God will be all in all, there needs no other meet-help; the body will be spiritual, and there will be in it no carnal desires to be gratified: when the mystical body is completed, there will be no further occasion to seek a godly seed, which was one end of the institution of marriage, Mal 2:15. In heaven there will be no decay of the individuals, and therefore no eating and drinking; no decay of the species, and therefore no marrying; where there shall be no more deaths (Rev 21:4), there need be no more births. The married state is a composition of joys and cares; those that enter upon it are taught to look upon it as subject to changes, richer and poorer, sickness and health; and therefore it is fit for this mixed, changing world; but as in hell, where there is no joy, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride shall be heard no more at all, so in heaven, where there is all joy, and no care or pain or trouble, there will be no marrying. The joys of that state are pure and spiritual, and arise from the marriage of all of them to the Lamb, not of any of them to one another." 272 | ARE WE MARIED | 1 Cor 7:1 | jlhetrick | 180087
Hello Wiley, Welcome to the Forum. I sincerely state that the question itself reflects that you do not actually believe that you and "your girl" are married. If you did, there would be no real need for the question. How convenient it might be to simply take our significant other to the alter in secret and declare our actions to be in the presence of the Lord and therefore legit. How convenient too might it then be to take her to the steps of the church door and declare yourself divorced from her. A better answered question might be; does the state in which your church exist consider you and your girl married? An easy no is the response. If the State doesn't consider you married can you live together as husband and wife and be a good witness to others? Another no. Can you put her on you insurance? No. If you have children do you, as the father, have paternal rights? Not in some states; not until you go through the "legal" proceedings of paternity testing (even if your name is on the birth certificate). Where is the legitimacy? What is the benefit? I know of at least one couple who argued your point and, knowing them both personally, I was pretty confident that their efforts were toward legitimizing their living together and sexual relationship. Search the Scriptures and see if you find anything at all that concludes that you are married. In your search consider what the Bible says regarding the institutions of government and our responsibilities as Christians to obey local, state, and federal law. I believe that the challenge for a man here would be to honor your girl and God by keeping yourself and her pure until you are legitimately married. There is a long-standing tradition recognized by the church and the state. Hope this helps, Jeff |

275 | have a quesion? My cousin is 19 and a n | Bible general Archive 3 | jlhetrick | 179989
Hello scapoferri, Welcome to the Forum. "is there a verse or something..." There are probably a lot of somethings that you might conjure up to dissuade your cousin but your not going to find it in a verse. Actually, I believe if you study God's word you will find just the opposite. The Scriptures teach, in fact, that it is God's intention that there be just one guy for her; and for a believer seeking God's will, that one will be a "gift" from God. Proverbs 19:14 (NASB95) 19:14 House and wealth are an inheritance from fathers, But a prudent wife is from the LORD. You might start with Genesis chapter 2, then chapter 24, then chapter 28. There is much more said in Scripture that should help to correct your thinking in this area, but these chapters are good illustrations of God having a specific person planned for a specific person. For your cousin, the the guy she's "in love" with, might not be the one, but I can't imagine that being your call based on her age alone. I'm curious though. Why would you want to teach a young adult that there is no such thing as "one true love"? Where does your belief come from that there is not "one guy made for her"? Finally, I might add, that if your are concerned about your cousin (and it sounds like you are) wouldn't church be the first place you would hope she would meet someone she might spend the rest of her life with? Hope this is helpful, Jeff |

276 | Is this a genuine study? | Bible general Archive 3 | jlhetrick | 179916
Paul, you ask an important question; one that deserves an honest answer. In my time participating on the Forum I have discovered that yes, in fact, there is an agenda to this site. In all honesty, it is bible study. Lockman makes it clear in the "Terms of Use". "Lets walk we know not where, Like Abraham". Abraham was commanded by God to leave his place and go to a place that he did not know. His faith was demonstrated through obedience. Thank God for those lessons. I do not find that we are called to do the same thing. We are given a very clear message and a calling just as important as Abraham's. Our obedience is to be to the the word of God as it is clearly stated and able to be understood. True enough that none of us knows all there is to know regarding Scripture and we will continue to learn throughout our lives if we stay in Him. That's why we study. The goal and the duty is to extract our doctrine from the truth of God's word, not to develop wild theories and then compare them to Scripture to see if they might have any validity. This type of approach results in serious error and eventually leads to a false doctrine being taught. So yes, I believe, from what I have seen on the Forum, when a poster is posting rediculous theories and ideas that attempt to "confound accepted beliefs, you will meet with resistance. The more you do it, the more intense the resistance. It will not be tolerated for long. Difficult questions we handle with Scripture according to our knowledge. Superstitions and fanciful ideas are simply just not tolerated. I think it was Doc who suggested to you somewhere that there are other sites out there that do allow their resources for that type of thing. Remember, "accepted beliefs" are accepted for a reason. Those who have gone before us and been proven by time and Scripture to be accurate (though not inspired) have done a great service to the church. I'm thankful to them. The task as individuals is to establish our own firm footing. What arrogance in a man might lead him to believe that God is revealing a new truth to him. And after Thousands of years of God speaking through men, using men to put down His word in writing, and then having that word preached. Honestly brother, do we have time to "walk we know not where" when there is still yet the entirety of God's word to explore and share with the world? The Canon is closed. In brotherly love, Jeff PS. Goodbye is an option you hold. Perhaps it's better to continue to participate with a committment to 2 Timothy 2:15 |

277 | nature of the holy spirit of god | Bible general Archive 3 | jlhetrick | 179775
Hello again gdh, Why would anyone want to exclude any portion of Scripture? Why would you request that any proof be "excluded". That is not a good approach to bible study. Try Mark 13:11, who speaks? Luke 12:12, who will teach? John 14:25-26 (NASB95) 14:25 "These things I have spoken to you while abiding with you. 26 "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you. Who will be sent? The Holy Spirit. By whom will He be sent? The Father. In who's name will He be sent? Jesus' The Holy Spirit is a distinct person as clearly taught by Scirpture. He is intelligent (1Cor. 2:10-11) He has a mind (Romans 8:27); He has a will and is purposeful in His actions (1Cor. 12:11) He guides Christians by "hearing", "speaking"and "declaring" things(John 16:13), etc., etc. Although I have only offered a very small amount of Scripture (in comparison to the abundance that is there) clearly showing the Holy Spirit to be a distinct person, I believe it is sufficient. Hope this helps, Jeff |

278 | giving of the holy spirit | NT general Archive 1 | jlhetrick | 179773
Hello gdh, Welcome to the forum. Actually, it's not at immersion or at the laying of hands of ministers that a believer receives the Holy Spirit. We receive the Spirit, and all of Him that there is to receive, at the very moment God saves us. None of Him before, and no more of Him at any time after. When God saves a person, He sends forth His Spirit into our hearts. Galatians 4:6 (NASB95) 4:6 Because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, "Abba! Father!" When God saves us we are sealed with His Spirit as a promise, guaranteeing our salvation. 2 Corinthians 1:20-22 (NASB95) 1:20 For as many as are the promises of God, in Him they are yes; therefore also through Him is our Amen to the glory of God through us. 21 Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and anointed us is God, 22 who also sealed us and gave us the Spirit in our hearts as a pledge. Ephesians 1:3-14 (NASB95) 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, 4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him. In love 5 He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will, 6 to the praise of the glory of His grace, which He freely bestowed on us in the Beloved. 7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace 8 which He lavished on us. In all wisdom and insight 9 He made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His kind intention which He purposed in Him 10 with a view to an administration suitable to the fullness of the times, that is, the summing up of all things in Christ, things in the heavens and things on the earth. In Him 11 also we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to His purpose who works all things after the counsel of His will, 12 to the end that we who were the first to hope in Christ would be to the praise of His glory. 13 In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God's own possession, to the praise of His glory. You requested that the responder show all pertinent verses; unfortunately, there are far too many and the amount of text that can be entered in any one post would not allow for it. Hope this is sufficient, Jeff |

279 | Why the need for manna? | OT general | jlhetrick | 179737
Hello Lap, Welcome to the Forum. With the information provided in Scripture we would need to do some assuming, and it would be no more than assumption. With that said: At the time in question, the Israelites had been on the move for about a month and a half. Perhaps the supplies they had brought with them (including the herd) was depleted or nearly so. We might also assume that they were growing tired of the same vittles. Ever had a piece of meet with no spices or condiments at all? :) Anyway, assumptions aside, when we focus on these types of details it's likely we will overlook the message. What's clear in the passage is the truth that the Israelites were disatisfied with their deliverance. They had been freed from the bondage of slavery. Yet they grumbled at the hardship preferring the pleasures of the flesh to the freedom given by God. Sound familiar? As Christians we have been freed from the bondage of slavery. Slavery to sin. But our flesh continues to cry out for it; to desire it; to want to be comforted by those things we have been freed from. More than being disatisfied, they had no faith in the One who had delievered them that He too would sustain them. Even after He provided the manna they were commanded to save nothing over night for the next day. God was testing them (v.4). And they fell short (v.19-20). Why did they save some for morning? Apparently they did not trust that the Lord would continue to provide. Still sound familiar? I know it does to me. Even as the Lord continues to bless me in this life, I continue to struggle with doing things my way. But like He did with His Israelites, He continues to do with me. It's often in hind-sight that I fully realize it; that it is only in His provision that I am sustained-spiritually and physically. I hope this helps. You will likely get other responses that offer better insight. Until then, I encourage you to spend some time in the whole chapter and book and focus on the larger message. God bless, Jeff |

280 | bear one's cross | John 19:17 | jlhetrick | 179507
Hello Mack, The teaching of Christ here is that of denial and suffering in complete dependence and obedience. That is, denial of self and the suffering that comes as a result of following Christ. As a man on earth, Christ was the chief example of this. Having nothing to do with His own will, but only that of His Father (John 5:30). Enduring the sufferings of this world by denying what would convenience and save His flesh and instead yielding to the Father's will even in suffering, even the suffering of the Cross (Matt. 26:39). If we are to truly be followers of Christ, we must "take up our cross" daily; minute by minute, resisting the flesh and the call of this world in exchange for doing the will of our Father as the Spirit gives us the power to do so (John 8:12,10:4,10:27,12:26,). Hope this helps, God Bless, Jeff |
