322 | how long did the plagues of exodus take | Exodus | jlhetrick | 171495
Hello abbey, I will wait with you to see if anyone knows the time span of the plagues as I don't have time tonight to research it. But while we're waiting, consider this. On the first account in chapter 9, notice that the plague only killed the livestock of the Egyptians. Not a single livestock of the Hebrew people was killed in the plague. Remember that the Hebrews were slaves of the Egyptions. It is possible (though not specified) that the Egyptions simply helped themselves to the livestock of the God's people. Just a thought, Jeff |

323 | Where's the Sacrifice for Sin? | Luke 16:19 | jlhetrick | 171400
Hi Tommy, Great question. Short answer for now as I am on my lunch break at work. To start with, lets do away with any notion that we "do" anything to "earn" salvation. I'm not saying this was your point when you asked "what did Lazarus have to do in order to be in Abraham's bosom?" Salvation has never been earned whether we are referring to OT or NT saints. Salvation is a free gift of GRACE given to the elect by God. We do nothing at all to earn it. We do nothing at all to secure it. The "channel" (for lack of better descriptor) through which God accomplishes this is that of FAITH. And even that faith is not of our own "doing" but that which is given us by God Himself. In other words, one only has faith to believe in Christ for salvation because God has given that faith in the first place. Eph 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Faith in what? You already understand this as being Jesus Christ. So what about Lazarus? Christ had not yet died and rose again. In short, in the OT, beginning in Genesis (3:15)God promises of the coming Messiah. The OT saints did not know His name, but they believed in faith that God would provide a savior as promised. So, it was not only their believing and trusting in God that demonstrated their faith, but their belief and faith in the Messiah promised by God. In essense, they believed in the same Jesus Christ that you and I do, only not knowing His earthly name. We are told very little about this man Lazarus and nothing at all regarding his past life or history of worship. We do not know that there was "no sacrifice for sin..."; but we can logically assume it because he was so poor. So, if Jesus said that Lazarus was in Abraham's bosom (the place for OT believers prior to the finished work of Christ)we don't assume, but we know; that Lazarus believed the promise of the Messiah. Nothing else saves. No, all the sins of the people before His crucifixion were not forgiven. This will probably start a new topic to discuss that the finished work of Christ did atone for all sin (prior to and all-time after His crucifixion); but only for the elect. Hope this helps, Jeff |

324 | have you really forgave that person? | Matt 18:21 | jlhetrick | 171373
Hello Sherita, Welcome to the forum! Start with Matthew 18:21-35. Read the parable by Jesus which illustrates man's responsibility to be mercyful and to forgive others. Notice that one's failure to offer forgiveness results in his/her own conflict with God (not that of the one to which forgiveness was not extended). But keep in mind that the one you speak of is not God. He/she will struggle in his imperfections. We are incapable of "forgetting" in the way God promises to do when He forgives. So patients may be in order on your part. Be careful not to put undue expectations on the one you have wronged by requiring their dealing with the issue to conform to your expectations. If you are saved you are already forgiven by God, to incude the wrong against this person you speak of (Heb. 10:12). Hope this helps, Jeff |

325 | Destination of souls before Christ? | Luke 16:19 | jlhetrick | 171286
Hello Tommy, Welcome to the forum! Start with Luke 16:19-31. This is an interesting bible story (not a parable) just in the reading and the life lesson alone. But it also gives understanding regarding your question. Hope this helps, Jeff |

326 | I need insight on proverbs chapter 31 | Prov 31:1 | jlhetrick | 171171
Hello Chosen, welcome to the forum. We have something in common. We are both chosen praise Jesus. I am no authority on Proberbs (or any section of the bible for that matter) but I wanted to give you something to consider while waiting on the member scholars that will likely respond soon. And there are some true scholars here on the forum so you have come to the right place. Here is a brief note from Adam Clark's Commentary on Proverbs 31. The commentary has much more to say about it and there are other commentaries as well. 'The words and prophecy of King Lemuel, and what his mother taught him, vv. 1, 2. Debauchery and much wine to be avoided, vv. 3-7. How kings should administer justice, vv. 8, 9. The praise of a virtuous woman and good housewife, in her economy, prudence, watchfulness, and assiduity in labor, vv. 10-29. Frailty of beauty, vv. 30, 31.' —Adam Clarke's Commentary Hope this helps, Jeff PS. A good commentary is great for helping understand scripture (but never the final authority or a replacement for Scripture) If you care for computer software there are many websites as well as free downloadable programs out there. Check out http://www.e-sword.net/ for an example of a really awesome, totally free complete bible software program and library. I use PC Study Bible 4 and Wordsearch7 as well, and the e-sword is just as functional as the high priced ones. |

327 | job 1-3 | Bible general Archive 3 | jlhetrick | 170545
Hello b50115, Welcome to the forum. Complete a profile and tell us a little about yourself. I took the bait and visited the website. For the sake of others, it lists a whole lot of scientific questions. I also looked back at you previous post which list multiple questions in one post. First, try to limit each post to one plain question (sometimes a follow up question in anticipation is appropriate). For others to respond appropriately to so many questions would require them to use multiple posts anyway due to the limited number of characters one can type in any given post. With that, I have a question for you. Are you saved? If you don't know what I mean and want to know more simply respond appropriately. I ask because this question is the most important of all. Knowledge of the others is of no lasting value to the lost and perishing. Christ's Love, Jeff |

329 | ... | 2 Tim 3:16 | jlhetrick | 170389
Hey Maerl, You give the short answer to your post as "as sinful as this may be..." What did you mean by that? Anyway, the bible is the word of God. Nothing else is sufficient. I don't mean this as an attack, but you sound like you have little or no reverence for the word of God. I hope I'm wrong. The relationship between God and every individual (lost and saved) is a very personal thing. For those of us that are saved, our relationship is different as you know. You say you are "sick and tired of the Scripture interprets Scripture". Why are you sick and tired of this? What else would you prefer to use to interpret scripture, if not the scripture itself? Regarding the word "faith", you might not appreciate this as an answer, but read scripture to gain a better understanding of faith. A "saving faith" is a gift from God. This kind of faith will never lose it's meaning regardless of how often you hear it. You say you are "ready for something that is consistent and authoritative". well my friend, there is nothing more consistent and nothing more authoritative than the scriptures. Friend. The Holy Bible is the word of God. If you look anywhere or to anything else, you are looking in the wrong place. Sincerely, Jeff |

Hello dmcwoolford, God speaks to us through His word the Holy Bible. Today, we "hear" God's voice by praying and meditating on His word. If this is not a sufficient answer, please be a little more specific with your question. Christ's Love, Jeff PS. Welcome to the forum. |

331 | Had God allowed Jesus to sin would He be | Phil 2:7 | jlhetrick | 170384
Hello saint-george, Even a basic understanding of scripture will reveal that Jesus did not "give up His diety". Jesus was and is God. He has always been and will always be God. In the incarnation, Jesus did not give up His diety. He continued to be God. What He did, was to give up His "glory" for a time. If you do a basic study of Christ incarnate, you will see that the scriptures affirm that He continued to posses all of the attributes of God. The scriptures declare His full diety, even during the time on earth as a man. some examples to get you started: Eternality: John 8:58 58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was born, I am. ASV (see also John 17:5 Omnipresence: Matt 28:20 20 teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I commanded you: and lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. ASV (See also Matt 18: 20) Omniscience: John 4:29 29 Come, see a man, who told me all things that (ever) I did: can this be the Christ? ASV (see Matt 16:21, Luke 6:8, Luke 11:17) Omnipotence: Matt 28:18 18 And Jesus came to them and spake unto them, saying, All authority hath been given unto me in heaven and on earth. ASV (also see Mark 5:11-15, John 11:38-44). Hope this helps, Jeff |

332 | The Lord is Rock | 1 Cor 10:4 | jlhetrick | 170344
Hello Ronnie, Welcome to the forum. Did you have a question to ask? If not thanks for the reference to Ps 18:30. Here's another: 1 Cor 10:4 4 and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ. ESV Again, welcome to the forum. If you find the time, please add information to your profile so we will know a little about you. To learn brief personal information about the others on the forum just click on their screen name to the right of the question or answer title. Matt 16:13-18 13 Now when Jesus came into the parts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Who do men say that the Son of man is? 14 And they said, Some (say) John the Baptist; some, Elijah; and others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets. 15 He saith unto them, But who say ye that I am? 16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. 17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-Jonah: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father who is in heaven. 18 And I also say unto thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this ROCK I will build my church; and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. 333 | What are five principles of living? | Job 32:13 | jlhetrick | 170289
Hello covered, Welcome to the forum. If you will, please take time to enter a short profile so we may know something about you. Did doc's answer help you? As christians we need to learn to steer clear of formulas and "methods" for living. As Doc pointed out, we run the risk of becoming legalistic. The focus in the life of every Christian, should be that of obedience to the word of God to His glory. See 2 Peter 1:3-10 for some very helpful, biblical advise on where to focus your lifestyle efforts. Tell us more about yourself and some indication of your understanding of scripture and perhaps we can offer more help. Christ's Love, Jeff |

334 | getting a tattoo and is this a sin? | James 4:17 | jlhetrick | 169209
Hello ck, Welcome to the forum. God bless you. It is a good thing that you desire a way to show your faith in God. However, to echo others, how would a tattoo do that? I want to give an example of how your question presents itself. The bible says thou shalt not lie. Does this mean I can't lie? This is really a foolish question in light of what I know about what the bible says, wouldn't you agree. Of course, the answer is, NO. It does not mean I can't lie. It means I should not lie. It means that if I do lie I dishonor and disobey God. It means that if I do lie I sin. As Christians we are no longer slaves to sin (Romans 6:6). This does not mean we will never sin, it means that we no longer have to obey the sinful desires of our flesh. We have, through the power of God, the Holy Spirit living in us, the ability to resist sin. We best honor God and best demonstrate our faith in God when we live in accordance with His will. We learn what His will is for us by reading and understanding what the bible says to us; not by looking for an angle around what is written. Someone said it is a "personal" choice or decision. He was right. It is your choice to let what is written be your guide, or to find away around what is written. Which do you believe honors God and best demonstrates your faith? One more thing. It is likely that you already know the answser to your own question. I base this on the fact that you are struggling with this decision. Why do you think that is? Might it be that you already know in your heart that this is really something you want for yourself, and not really something you believe will honor God and demonstrate your faith? Just asking, not accusing. God loves you. Love Him back in the best way you can. A good place to start is to honor Him and demonstrate your faith in Him by following what is written in His word the best you can. I hope this helps, Jeff |

335 | Matt Chtp 5 | Bible general Archive 3 | jlhetrick | 169178
Hello again Leia, I could offer a generic answer like "everything happens for a reason" but I wont. I can appreciate your situation, and I don't want to appear to be blowing you off, however, the forum is not desgined or intended to provide counseling or recommendations along these lines. Your situation here may require many levels of intervention, possibly including legal advise. With that said, one obvious and essential inclusion is that of prayer and seeking the direction of God. Things do happen for a reason, but sometimes the reason is caused, or set in motion, or in some way contributed to by the evil forces that we war against as Christians. What we can be sure of, is that God is in control, even when things don't seem to be going our way. Col 1:16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities--all things were created through him and for him. Col 1:17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. We have to continually learn to trust God and the scriptures teach over and over again that this learning sometimes comes through the hardships we face in life. Mat 6:31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' Mat 6:32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. Mat 6:33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. I hope you are able to grow from this experience. Don't let bitterness take root in your heart. Continue to seek the will of God and to praise Him for all that He has blessed you with and brought you through already. Hope this helps, In Christ's love, Jeff |

336 | Promises of God listed in the Bible. | Bible general Archive 3 | jlhetrick | 169167
Hello Psalm 139:13, I don't have a list, it will be interesting to see one though. Welcome to the forum. I'm not knowing what your goal is for having this information, but while you wait for the list, I thought it might be helpful to consider: Not every promise made by God in the bible is a promise for you and for me or for the church in general. Some promises were to individuals, and some to specific nations, such as Israel. You probably already know this, but if not, I thought it might be helpful. Again, welcome to the forum. Also, if your not aware, you can create a profile to let the other members know a little about you. God bless, Jeff |

337 | Math chpt 5. need blance..... | Bible general Archive 3 | jlhetrick | 169152
Hello Leia, If I'm understanding your question, the answer is no. We are not called to behave in accordance with biblical teaching in order to make us "stepping stones". We are called to obey/behave accordingly in order to glorify God. This sometimes calls for "turning the other cheek". As for my understanding at this point in my christian life, the bible never teaches us to resist and/or rebuke others for the sake of self. That is, to defend our own pride or honor. Where we are to give a rebuke, is in the defense of the gospel and in declaration of the truth of God. Not that the gospel, or any part of God's truth needs or requires our defense. But we are taught in scripture to be ready to give an answer for our faith and what we believe. Hopes this is helpful, Jeff |

338 | Paul's evil practices Pre or PostJesus | Rom 7:19 | jlhetrick | 169019
hello whatever, You have heard from others and probably realize that your just as confused as when you asked the question. I don't know "Reformer Joe" from the forum but follow Moran (Tim) and Doc and respect both of their opinions and committment to study in search of the truth. This debate has gone on for a long time both here on the forum and within the church. My opinion is that when the very deep critical analysis of scripture yields differing opinions and/or interpretations, the best rule is to go with the plain language as it is written. Rom 7:21-25 21 So I find this law at work: When I want to do good, evil is right there with me. 22 For in my inner being I delight in God's law; 23 but I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members. 24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? 25 Thanks be to God — through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God's law, but in the sinful nature a slave to the law of sin. NIV All of this plainly described/presented in the present tense. Hope this helps, Jeff |

340 | is this Faith in God or just confused? | Bible general Archive 3 | jlhetrick | 168975
Hello Chrissy, I would like to start my response with what is intended to be helpful advise. In no way is this meant to be mean spirited or negative toward you. We fail from the start, I believe, when we see the bible as a compilation of "verses" that we can look up; finding the right one for the right circumstance that it might be quoted to address and/or resolve our issues. What is needed is an understanding of what those verses, taken in context with the surrounding verses and the wider teachings of scripture has to say. With this said, there is a lot of teaching regarding the institution of marriage found in scripture. The bible also teaches very clearly what God's plan is regarding family and child rearing. If we make our own choices regarding these things, without following God's plan, the consequences can be very negative. I don't believe there is "a verse" that any of us can point you to that will serve any benefit at all in your cousin's situation. However, you might start in 1 Corinthians chapter 7 to begin to get an understanding of what God has said through Paul regarding appropriate/inappropriate relationships and marriage. You sound at a loss, it's an unfortunate situation that certainly should include prayer and hope. Remember though, it is up to your cousin to make her own choices. All you can do beyond prayer, is to provide her with the information found in God's word. Not a verse, but what God teaches us regarding the issue as a whole. I hope this is helpful to you, Jeff |
