401 | calm slow thoughts peaceful slow words! | 2 Cor 12:9 | jlhetrick | 153581
Hello bk.., God bless you and I'm sorry for your accident and consequences. 2Co 12:9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. You might try looking into the history of Charels Spurgeon (just do a web search on the name) try to find biographical information on him. He is considered one of the best theologians and preachers of his time and perhaps ever. I mention him because he lived with very severe pain that threatened, and at times I believe actually, incapacitated him. You will find that, reagarding the above verse, Mr. Spurgeon lived and learned to believe it. Also, many of my patients have Bipolar Disorder and I have seen different combinations of medications work extremely well for many of them. Bipolar is one of the most treatable disorders in this field of medicine when the patient is compliant with medication regimen. Therapy/counseling may be helpful as well. Continue to pray and praise God and think Him for sparing your life. Seek to make it worthwhile that you were spared by recognizing He has a plan for you. Seek Him, believe Him, and follow Him. Hope this helps |

402 | Ever been a preacher as wise as Solomon? | Eccl 9:2 | jlhetrick | 153520
Absolutely, thanks for pointing it out. We need to be reminded of this truth especially in this generation of "name it and claim it" teaching. Of course the bible teaches that God blesses the faithful but many have prostituted this truth by assigning wordly riches to it's meaning. The bible also teaches that for those who truly know the Lord, many persecutions will come. It is those same persecutions that remind us that we are His and bring the blessing of peace from which we are able to rejoice. Mat 5:10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Mat 5:11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Thanks again for the reminder. Many want get this truth at church. |

403 | Am I in the relationship God wants me in | 1 Corinthians | jlhetrick | 153518
Hi James, This is a very serious issue both in your Life as well as Angela's. Any advise you get from the forum should be only considered and not the basis for your decision. If you are in church, talk to your pastor and/or an elder in the church for guidance. You have already acknowledged that your sexual relationship outside of marriage was (is?) sinful. I would say plainly that this must stop if you are to be in the will of God. Refer to 1 Corinthians chapter one, read the whole chapter. This will give a lot of insight regarding God's expectations regarding man and woman and marriage. There are other references elswhere in this chapter and other chapters/books of the bible. Regarding the continuous fighting. First let me say that you can not pray for and expect God to bless a sinful relationship. It might be possible that much of the contention is because God is not putting His peace on a relationship between two professing Christians because there is sexual imorality involved. Remember, we are all sinners. Sin alone isn't the issue. It's the continuing life-style of sin without true repentance that grieves God. You can have a significant-other relationship with Angela without marrying or until married, however, it must be within the boundaries taught in scripture. God can bless such a relationship. One more thing. Where there is divisiveness and contention in any relationship I think it's important to keep one primary verse in mind as the man in the relationship: 1Pe 3:7 Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered. Although you are not married, the idea of "giving honor" to the woman is still applicable. If you love her, you should treat her with honor. Ask the Lord to change you first and behave differently toward her. You may be very surprised by her response though it may be slow in coming. Hope this is helpful Jeff |

2Co 12:9 And He has said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness." Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. 2Co 12:10 Therefore I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christ's sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong. |

405 | Will there be a partial rapture? | 1 Thess 4:17 | jlhetrick | 153388
Hi Kalos, I do not believe in a “partial rapture”. I have never heard this taught and do not find anything in scripture to support it. Rom 10:9 (KJV) That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. We are not saved by our faithfulness but by what we have faith in and therefore believe. Furthermore, we don’t even posses the "faith" to believe in and of ourselves. In other words, we can not produce that faith. It is God who gives us the faith through which we are capable of believing in the first place. Rom 12:3 (KJV) For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith. So: 1) we are saved when believing in Jesus Christ for salvation. 2) this believing comes through faith. 3) this faith is not of ourselves but given by God “in measure” (so that no man can boast of it). Therefore, I do not believe there is such thing as an “unfaithful” Christian. If one is a true Christian one has believed and confessed Jesus Christ through faith given him/her by God. This faithfulness from God is sufficient Jeff |

408 | Why does he fall asleep at church? | Luke 8:15 | jlhetrick | 153274
Hello Samantha, Yes he should go to church. He certainly can't get anything if he's not there. Try this along with Doc's advise. Ask your husband if he would fall asleep if his boss was standing in front of him talking to him. Or, if President bush walked in the room and spoke directly to him would he fall asleep. If the answer is yes, get a doctor, he needs a sleep study and possible treatment (seriously). If the answer is no to these questions, it may be that he has little or no reverence for God in spite of what he might say. challenge him to consider this on his own without expecting him to answer to you on it. Please don't think I'm judging him. Of course we are all human, and as Doc points out, the flesh is always contending. Gets the best of all of us sometimes, most of us have at least drifted off in church at one time or another. But, if it is habitual (like it sounds) something serious is wrong. Pray for him. Jeff P.S. In Army Basic Training we spent long hours sitting in class rooms and the lessons were sometimes monotonous and boring. punishment was severe if your eyes closed for longer than a blink. (50 pushups for an already tired body). When our eyes got heavy, we would stand and move to the back of the room and stand along the wall to keep awake. This can be helpful where practical. |

Can't have one without the other lionstrong. If you love God you will love and cherrish His word. Look how much God loves it: Isa 55:11 (KJV) So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it. He sounds really passionate about it doesn't He. After He said this, He continued preparing it for you and me to have personally a copy. Got mine right here close |

410 | Why choose Heaven | 1 Cor 12:3 | jlhetrick | 153269
Hi askgod, With love and respect say Something like: There is only one God. Without Him you have no hope. He loves you and has given you the means by which to know Him, through accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior (becoming a Christian). Becoming a Christian is the only way to know Him. When you die, if you do not know Him, all hope is lost of ever knowing Him and you will spend eternity separated from Him. You will be cast into a lake of fire. Some might say that this approach is “trying to scare people into becoming Christians.” Well I can’t speak to why God chose to put it so plainly, but I can say, it sure scares me and makes me that much more thankful that he offered an alternative. If it’s good enough for Him it’s good enough for me. How greatly the church might benefit from hearing the truth again. How many of us have heard the simple truth regarding this issue from the pulpit lately? It’s no longer politically correct for a pastor to look his congregation in the face and say, “if you haven’t trusted Jesus for your salvation you will DIE AND GO TO HELL. Don’t look for a politically correct answer to this question. Tell him/her the truth and show them in God’s word. Show them God’s mercy and grace and how much he loves them personally and show them His perfect plan for salvation completed at the cross. Show them through scripture that the consequences of rejecting Him are tragic, and then show them that His love for them is so much greater and available for them to receive. You’ve done your part. Be patient and let the Holy Spirit do His part. Continue to be available to answer questions, teach, and most of all pray for them. P.S. If your specifically asking for bible verses I’m going to encourage you to continue in your study until you come up with them. We must prepare ourselves as witnesses 1Pe 3:15 (KJV) But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear: 2Ti 2:15 (NASB) Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth. Hope this helps Jeff |

411 | What is mercy? | Matt 5:7 | jlhetrick | 153185
JRM, a good Greek/Hebrew dictionary will be helpful in word studies. In this case Mercy in the OT is translated from the Hebrew word Chesed and means "kindness" and "piety". Where we find the word in the NT it is translated from the Greek word eleeo which means compassion. My first thought is that a power relationship is not significant regarding the meaning of the word. It may be that your observation that mercy "generally involves a power relationship" is because, perhapse, it is in such a relationship that mercy is best illustrated, or, most often illustrated. Then again, your observation may be applied as follows: If mercy is showing or demonstrating kindness, piety, compassion to another one might argue; The one demonstrating mercy might be thought of as being in a position of power in the relationship. The power being, the ability to show mercy vs. with hold mercy. (show kindess or not show kindness) But this argument would mean, I think, that the recipient would have a degree of reliance on mercy from another. I guess I didn't answer the question, but I hope my post will move us closer to an understadning. Jeff hmmm! |

412 | Need help on the law | Rom 3:20 | jlhetrick | 153184
Hello Momma2, The law here refers to the Ten Commandments which reflect God’s righteousness and character. In addition, the Israelites had the “bi-laws” given to them by Moses as rules for daily living that were intended to guide the Israelites in their keeping the law. There were something like 613 of these bi-laws and you can find them in the book of Exodus, I believe starting at chapter 21. The “deeds” of the law refers to a persons doing the “works” of the law. This means, generally speaking, carrying out the traditions, rules, regulations (bi-laws) established to keep one in a right-standing with the Ten Commandments and therefore with God. The law is the knowledge of sin in that it makes us aware of God’s expectations and his righteous and holy character. We are without excuse in our sin because God has given us a clear and specific identification and understanding of what sin is through the law. “Thou shalt not steal” is very clear. God is saying, it is wrong to steal. Therefore, through the law, we are made fully aware of what sin is, so, the law becomes knowledge of sin. “No flesh shall be justified in his sight” by the works of the law. We can not be justified (made righteous, in right standing with God, declared free of guilt regarding breaking the law) by our works. In other words, by trying to be good and keeping the rules. The bible teaches us that we are all sinners and fall short of God’s holy character and his requirements regarding sin (Romans 3:23) The bible says that the penalty for sin is death Romans 6:23, but the verse doesn’t stop there. It goes on to say, “but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord”. So, because you are a sinner (just like me), and the penalty for a single sin is death (eternal separation from God and punishment in Hell) you and I need to be made righteous, free of sin in the eyes of God. Keeping the law can not do this a) because you and I are incapable of living continuously without sinning at one time or another, b) God, who is the final authority, did not give the law as a redeeming source. He did not give it to save us but rather to make us aware of our sin as illustrated above. Being aware makes you and me accountable. So our only hope is in Jesus Christ who gave His life, died our death for us, in order to make atonement (pay the price) for our sins. By accepting JESUS as Lord and Savior and trusting in his payment as sufficient to cover your sins (faith), you can be saved from the penalty of sin which is death. See Romans 10:9-10 Hopes this helps, Jeff |

413 | WHAT'S THE LAW | Rom 3:28 | jlhetrick | 153146
I don't see a scripture reference but I'm guessing your referring to somewhere in Romans, perhaps Romans 3:28. The law refers to the Ten Commandments and the bi-laws given by Moses (613 of them I think). I have to get ready for church but perhaps someone knows from memory where to find them, I think they might be covered in Exodus chapter 21. Anyway, a quick note. the bi-laws were given by Moses to instruct the daily lives of the Israelites in keeping with the Ten Commandments given by God (as I understand it). The Ten Commandments sum up God's expectations of man in keeping with His righteousness. So, there is a misconception regarding your question. We DO continue to "go buy" the law. Jesus said: Mat 5:17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. The law was given to make us aware of our sin. Because we cannot "keep" the law perfectly Jesus died for us. So, we are not "saved" by the law, but Paul writes in Romans somewhere that through faith we establish, or uphold the law Hopes this helps |

417 | how can i get the powers of the holy spi | Gal 5:16 | jlhetrick | 150857
First you must be saved (if you are not) Rom 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. Rom 10:10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. (KJV) When god saves you through faith in Jesus Christ, He "seals" you with His Spirit. The Holy Spirit actually dwells within your heart. 2Co 1:21 Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God; 2Co 1:22 Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.(KJV) You have all of Him and there is no more to obtain, however, it is He, the Holy Spirit, that will operate at various times imparting His power to you and/or through you as necessary for accomplishing specific tasks for Him. Luk 12:11 When people bring you before synagogue leaders, rulers, or authorities, don't worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say. Luk 12:12 For in that hour the Holy Spirit will teach you what you are to say." (ISV) Rom 8:11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.(KJV) So, bibleheat, I believe the answer to your question can be summed up in this way. Question: "How can i get the powers of the holy spirit?" Answer: You can't. What you can "get" is the blessing of having the Holy Spirit dwell within your heart and then He will make use of His own power when necessary where you are concerend. Be careful not to be swayed by different kinds of teachings and doctrines that you may hear or even read in books regarding this subject. The "power" of the Holy Spirit is not something we "get" as though something baught at the store or traded for. Act 8:18 Now when Simon saw that the Spirit was given through the laying on of the apostles' hands, he offered them money Act 8:19 and said, "Give me this power too, so that when I lay my hands on someone he will receive the Holy Spirit." Act 8:20 But Peter said to him, "May your money perish with you because you thought you could obtain God's free gift with money! (ISV) I answer this question to my understanding of the scriptures and with love and consideration. I have been on the journey you are on. I too had once been under the impression, lead to believe, that there was some way of acqiring God's powers to use as needed, when needed. God will use His powers as needed according to His will and good pleasure. I had also struggled for a very long time as the lie was told to me that I "must not be truly saved" because I "had not demonstrated my salvation" through certain works or "gifts" of the Spirit. What a struggle this was for me. What a terrible lie from the evil one. Hope this really does help |

418 | Falling to Temptation is Being Deceived | James 1:14 | jlhetrick | 147048
Hello again Doc. I just want to give a short answer concerning myself personally. I think that temptation and deceit can be the same thing but are not necesarrily the same in every case. Personally, I regularly experience temptation where there is no deceit. In fact, for me, I think it's those temptations that I struggle with the most, because when it results in sin the guilt can be overwhelming. Like Paul, I keep doing those things that I know I shouldn't and very often don't do those that I know I should be doing. Very often I am tempted, and sometimes fall to the temptation, where I can not claim "I was deceived" which, in some cases is a cop-out. Webster's Dictionary defines deceit as ..."the misleading of a person; the leading of another person to believe what is false, or not to believe what is true..." I am ashamed to say, that I am often tempted and at times follow through with sin when I know, from the beginning of the temptation, that what I am thinking about doing, or doing, is sinful, and sometimes do it anyway. I would agree that in some cases there is deceit involved, both from the devil and that of deceiving myself (making excuses or rationalizing behaviors). I see this often in my patients. Deep down they know a behavior is wrong, but they have so rationalized it, so often and to the point at which they have taken on a sense of believing their own excuses. They have effectually deceived themselves. I think though that James 1:14 given as reference illustrates this. It certainly speaks of deception, but it appears that it's the person's on "lust" or "passion" that is involved in the deceiving. Thanks for posting a question that makes us consider this, I will be looking forward to seeing other responses and how others may view this. jlhetrick |

419 | what if a christian is married to non-ch | 2 Cor 6:14 | jlhetrick | 146978
Hello aiello! I believe that prayon's answer is accurate in that a believer is not to marry a nonbeliever (2 Cor. 6:14). However, I understood from you questions that you were already married before you came to the Lord. If you were already married (and perhaps that is irrelevent since you are legally married now) the scriptures has much more to say about it. first, if you were already married before coming to believe and being saved, refer to 1 Cor. 7:13. We are not told here but it is practicle to believe that in the early days of the church, while so many were coming to believe in the Lord, that it was a very common event for a husband or a wife to hear and believe before the other. If that new believer were to then "leave" what hope then would there be for the unbelieving spouse to come into the knowledge of the Lord and be saved? A key here in the verse mentioned is that if the unbelieving spouse consents to stay with the believer, the believer is not to leave. the unbeliever is "sanctified in" the believer making it possible that the children are "holy". (a biblical proof, I believe that God establishes and sanctifies the family). Don't forget the following chapter. If the unbeliever leaves on his/her own accord, the believing spouse is "not bound" 1 Cor. 7:16 may be the most important. You may someday lead your husband to the Lord. Next, Jesus spoke to divorce as sinful (see Mark 10:4-12) Even if you were a believer and then married an unbeliever would divorce be an option. If we believe that for a believer to marry an unbeliever is a sin (it goes against teaching of scripture) then are we to believe that divorcing this unbeliever after the fact is any less a sin? Is it possible to right a wrong with a wrong? Would the sin of divorce be justified on the basis that the marriage, in the first place, was sinful? Finally, let me say that if you or your children are being physically abused you need to ensure both your and their safety. I don't find in scripture where God expects us to keep ourselves and our children at risk of personal injury or death. I have heard of some teaching from scripture that allows for divorce in the case that a spouse "deserts" the other. I believe I read it in a book authored by Pat Robertson. I'm sorry but the book title and referenced scriptures I have forgotten. I think I remember him explaining how a spouse who has completely foresaken the vows of marriage, though he/she may still be physically present, has in fact deserted the marriage. This, of course, may not be at all what he was teaching and may not have any scriptural suppport whatsoever so please don't make a decision based on the "desertion" issue before searching and praying and knowing it's right. |

420 | Who is Melchizedek? | Gen 14:18 | jlhetrick | 146974
The bible never specifically tells us who Melchizedek was of course, but, there is enough in description to lead me to believe that he was possibly Jesus Himself. We know that Jesus was and is God and that He has always been in existance. We also know that He participated directly here on earth since the beginning (John 1:1) and we know that Jesus was active in creating the earth. So, of course, he was not just in Heaven waiting for His earthly ministry. As for the descriptions in Hebrews. Abraham offered Melchizedeck a tith. At this time in history, the bible tells of no man greater in faith than Abrham. He was, at that time, God's "leading man" so to speak. therefore, I believe, who else would be in a position to receive a tith from Abraham. (I believe the bible is clear that it is the "lesser" who offers up a tith to the "greater". Melchizedek is referred to as "the King of Righteousness" and "the King of peace". The bible never refers to anyone other than God by these titles. for my understanding, Heb. 7:3 seems to establish that Melchizedek was Jesus. "Without father, without mother, without genealogy; having neither beginning of days nor end of life..." These characteristics could only be true of God. This is a mystery, or is it. I believe that God intentionally gave us enough to draw a conclusion. The bible only tells of God presenting Himself on earth in the flesh as Jesus Christ. Angels have also been sent to appear as men, however, they would not be attributed the characteristics mentioned. (quotes from Darby Bible 1889) |
