281 | Mathew 5.6 | Matt 5:6 | stjohn | 208825
Hi dcmartin: Brother Hank has made some exelent points! And I thank him for shedding greater light on the subject! I should have made that more clear; these are attributes/benefits/"characteristics", of those who are already saved, not some kind of instrutions on how to be saved, this could be shown to bring in works. "For by grace are ye saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God." Eph 2:8 God bless John |

282 | Mathew 5.5 | Matt 5:5 | stjohn | 208814
Hi Dcmartin: This is not the righteousness of worldly things, such as justus in the law which the jews were seeking. But the righteousness of Christ himself, that he gives freely to those who seek Him, thirst for Him, hunger for Him, and salvation. And receive through the Holy Spirit, dwelling in us when we believe in the sufficiency of Christ being punished, 'Crucified' in our stead, for our sins, John 3:16 and are filled with the Holy Spirit. A righteousness that fills and satisfies, with peace, joy, and assurance of eternal life, so that no other righteousness will be sought by those who believe In Jesus Christ, and are saved from eternal damnation. What a blessing! Blessed are those, indeed! God bless John |

283 | Matt 15:26-27 What did Jesus mean? | Matt 15:26 | stjohn | 208797
Hi dispen4ever: I think John Gill says it quite well. "it is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it to dogs;" which he said, to try her faith the more, and make it the more illustrious; and that not so much from his own sense of things, as in the language of the Jewish people, and which she might not be a stranger to. By "the children", are meant the Jews, to whom the adoption belonged; who, as a nation and people, were the children of God in a large sense; being distinguished by many blessings and favours, which others had not, and being under the more peculiar care and notice of God; not that all of them were the children of God by special grace: by "the bread"; which belonged to them, is meant the external ministry of the word, and the miracles of Christ wrought among them: and particularly such outward favours which related to the good of the bodies of men, by healing their diseases, and dispossessing them of devils: and by "the dogs" are designed the Gentiles, so called by the Jews in a way of contempt, because of their ignorance, idolatry, and impurity." "yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their master's table." "She suggests that though the Gentiles were but dogs, and she one of them; yet their common Lord and Master had a propriety in them, and they in him; and were to be maintained and fed, and ought to live, though not in such fulness of favours and blessings, as the Jews, the children of God: nor did she desire their affluence, only that a crumb of mercy might be given her, that her poor daughter might be healed; which was but a small favour, in comparison of the numerous ones he heaped upon the children, the Jews: nor would this be any more detrimental to them, than it is to the children, for the dogs, under the table, to eat of the crumbs that fall."--John Gill From: http://www.freegrace.net/gill/ God bless John |

287 | Israelites journey to Canaan 11 days? | Exodus | stjohn | 208649
Hello Tracey: Welcome to the forum. Well, Tracey, by my calculations, which are only an informally educated guess. The trip was approximately 425 miles, I think, (I may be off by a mile or two) :-) and divide that by 11 days, and you would have to move, (most scholars believe) a crowd the size of a large city of about 2.5 million men women and children, over 38.6 miles a day. Personally, I think that would be, logistically, and by all practical means, pretty tough to do. But it sure could have taken a pretty small fraction of forty years! Even at a mile a day it would have taken only about 425 days, or one year and a little over two month's. By the way, Tracey, not to discourage you at all, that was a good question, and you are very welcome here, we would love to have stay and study God's word with us. But that was kinda off a bit as far as Bible study per-say, because it called for a degree of speculation and opinion on my part, and this is a 'sola scriptura' (that means scripture only) Bible study forum, and the Bible doesn't address the subject of your question. I hope no-one minds. Anyway, I hope that helped you, Tracey. Shalom and God bless John |

290 | "Mystery of God" Rev 10 | Amos 3:6 | stjohn | 208455
Hi John.... Welcome to the forum! No offense John, but speaking of mysteries, It is a mystery to me that more people that visit this site, do not follow the instruction, "Please *search* for your question before asking it" and, "Whenever possible, postings should include supporting Bible references." I am guilty of this myself, so please don't think I am thinking too highly of myself: I don't! This is just a friendly reminder to help insure your experience here is edifying to you, and all who read along. As you can see by the fact that some of your posts have been deleted by the powers that be, in their vigilant monitoring of the posting's on this forum, and, from what some others have already posted to you, John, opinions and speculations don't carry very much weight around here. :-) I hope and pray, that your experience here is a good and lasting one. Shalom and God bless John |

293 | whjat does it mean man's free will | Bible general Archive 4 | stjohn | 208078
Hello Jazzy: A warm welcome to the forum! The short answer is a resounding, Yes! Here is something that is much better said, from, http://www.gotquestions.org/free-will.html You can use that link to read more if you like, here is just a sample excerpt from that site. God bless John Question: "Do human beings truly have a free will?" Answer: If “free will” can mean that God gives humans the opportunity to make choices that genuinely affect their destiny, then, yes, human beings do have a free will. The world’s sin status is directly associated with choices made by Adam and Eve. All accounts of the fall of mankind indicate it was as the result of a wrong choice. From that point on, individuals have had the opportunity to choose to follow God or to experience the consequences for not making that choice. http://www.gotquestions.org/free-will.html |

295 | hebrews 9:27 | Hebrews | stjohn | 207772
Hi sog... I hope this is not some "technical obvious observation", though I must confess, I have no idea what you might mean by that. I do hope this helps you. Heb 9:27 is what is known as a general rule, because there are found in scripture some obvious exceptions. Elijah and Enoch, being two of them, also Lazarus of, John 11:14 and Tabitha of, Acts 9:40 are two more. There are others as well, Acts 20:9-10 and Mark 5:35-42, are two more exceptions to this rule. John Gill has this to say on Hebrews 9:27 that may be helpful to you. Shalom John Ver. 27. And as it is appointed unto men once to die,.... Not a moral, or what is commonly called a spiritual death, nor an eternal one, but a corporeal one; which does not arise from the constitution of nature, but from the sin of man, and God's decree on account of it; by which it is fixed that men shall die, and how long they shall live, and when they shall die; so that they cannot die sooner nor later; all things antecedent to death, which lead on to it, and issue in it, are appointed by God, and so is death itself, with all its circumstances; men's days can neither be lengthened nor shortened, either by Christ himself, or others: and this statute and appointment of God concerns men, not angels, and reaches to all men, wicked and righteous; and though there have been some exceptions, as Enoch and Elijah; and all will not sleep, or die, some will be found alive at Christ's appearing; yet such will undergo a change which is equivalent to death, as Enoch and Elijah have done: and generally speaking men die but once; it is not usual for men to die, and live again, and then die again; there have been some extraordinary instances of this kind, but they are rare; it is the statute law of heaven in common for men to die and that but once; --John Gill |

296 | Are the "people" in Matt. 13 unsaveable? | Matt 13:36 | stjohn | 207748
Hi Willy: Welcome to the forum! If we look at Matt 13:36 we can see that the disciples didn't know what the parables meant either, Jesus had to explain the parables to the disciples, just like we need the scriptures to explain them to us. So we cannot from scripture determine if they were unsaveable or unreachable. To speculate what Jesus was thinking about their individual hearts, would be quite presumptuous. Isaiah 55:8 God bless John |

297 | Sheol Hell or World of the Dead? | Eccl 8:14 | stjohn | 207320
Hi Bowler: By the way, Hell and Sheol are not necessarily the same place. Hell, as we think of the place of eternal judgment and suffering, "can" be seen as the side of Hades that the rich man is, or, more likely, a place not yet open for business. See Rev 19:20, and 20:10-15 God bless John |
||||||
298 | Sheol Hell or World of the Dead? | Eccl 8:14 | stjohn | 207319
Hi Bowler: Simply take the meaning of Sheol that makes the most sense for the verse in question, and apply it. For instance, in the story of the rich man and Lazarus, it's obvious, (Using Allegory here) that they are not in the same boat, though they may be in the same body of water; one is righteous and the other is not, though they are both seen in the same place, the word Hades is used here, but we are seeing a different language being spoken, it means death, or the place of death, and they are separated by a gulf, or, "a great chasm fixed, so that those who wish to come over from here to you will not be able, and that none may cross over from there to us." Luke 16:26b So again, simply take the meaning of Sheol that makes the most sense for the verse in question, and apply it. It's not really that hard, just use your noodle a little bit. I think it was Dr. Ironside (often quoted by McGee) that said, "God doesn't put the cookies on the top shelf, where the kiddies cant reach them. :-) God bless John |
