261 | Weakness vs lies | Ps 62:7 | stjohn | 210696
Hi jillyanna: Welcome to the study Bible forum! I don't know if it is true or not, but I heard a story about Martin Luther, where the devil supposedly came to him, perhaps in a dream, and showed him a list of all the sins that he, (the devil) was aware of; the list was a mile long, but old Marty just said to him, "is that all you've got-!?" We all know we are no good, but we have someone who is good, and He is the one that saved us by becoming our sin for us, Jesus Christ our saviour knows full well that we are no good, but He died for us anyway because He loves us, unconditionally! O come, let us sing for joy to the LORD, Let us shout joyfully to the rock of our salvation. Ps 95:1 God bless John |

Dear Milena, You are very welcome mi amiga! I hope I'm correctly guessing your gender from your name? ¿hablo español? Muy, muy poco mi amiga! Yes, I did use worldlingo, if I could say 50 words in Spanish it would surprise me. :-) I see Azure has given you a very good suggestion to teach children, but not only the 2 great commandments, the Ten Commandments are what we would call the moral law, and are good to teach children of all ages. I have recently been asked to teach Sunday-school and before I start my lesson-plan every week I listen to J. Vernon McGee's Thru the Bible, (A Través de la Biblia) it is very good very down to Earth and easy to understand for all ages, and, the good news is; they have it available in Spanish at this web-address. http://www.oneplace.com/ministries/Thru_the_Bible_Spanish/ McGee's teachings have been a great help to me and give me a good deal of information to build my lesson on. I use other commentaries as well, but Vernon McGee is my favorite for getting a real simple to understand foundation to build my lesson on, and I am very thankful to our God for giving him to us! To your question; I'm not sure exactly what you are saying, but I'm sure it would be a sin to break any of God's moral laws, regardless of wether we apply a principle to it or not. Ignorance of the law or even the principle of said law, is no excuse for breaking the law; it would still be sin, regardless. I hope this helps you. Just a side note, you may just hit the note button to reply to a post, you don't need to put it as a question, and that way it leaves the home page open for other questions to the forum in general. Would you please give us some information in the user profile? It's always good to know someone a little better then just what we can learn from reading their posts. Milena, I'm so happy to see you are deciding to stay and study God's Word with us. This place is such a blessing to me, and I hope it will be a blessing to you too! God bless John |

263 | how many heavens are there? | Bible general Archive 4 | stjohn | 210626
Dear James: Welcome to the forum. When the Bible talks about the third Heaven it does not mean that there are three Heavens where God has a throne and where we think of it as the Heaven in which God dwells. It simply means that that is where Paul was caught up to. i.e. The Heaven where Jesus sits at the right hand of God, as opposed to the other places in Scripture where the word Heaven means something else. The first Heaven would be what we call our atmosphere, or where we find air for birds and planes to fly in. Gen 1:20 Then God said, "Let the waters teem with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth in the open expanse of the heavens.” The second Heaven would be outer space, where we find the stars. Job 12:7, Job 35:11, Ps 8:8, Ps 79:2, there are many other verses that refer to the, “Birds of the Heaven’s” also there are about 25 verses that talk about the Stars of Heaven. I hope this clears it up for you. God bless John |

264 | Why is communion a sin for sinners? | Luke 22:19 | stjohn | 210574
Dear Keliy: It sounds very much to me that the non denominational and the denominational Church were both saying the same thing, only just putting the words in a different order. When we partake in The Lord's Super, we are certainly supposed to have a conversation with God, search ourselves, ask God to search us, and of course to the best of our knowledge, make sure we are not doing this with unconfessed sin. I personally can't imagine someone having communion with God without doing this. In short, yes, it would be wrong. God bless John |

265 | What is the origin of YHWH (Yahweh) | OT general | stjohn | 210555
Hi malexis: Welcome to the forum! I'm not an expert by any stretch of the imagination, but it is my understanding that YHWH is the original Hebrew which had no vowels. Yahweh is what I believe is called a, transliteration, with the vowels added for aid in English pronunciation. I hope this helps you and that I didn't mess it up too bad. :-) God bless John |

267 | where is the joy of my salvation? | Bible general Archive 4 | stjohn | 210241
Dear Linda: I see this is still a burden to you as you asked this a couple months ago. Don't be discouraged my dear, it's a pretty natural progression in the life of a Christian. As we learn and grow we often will wax sorrowful for the lost. This is good because; what kind of person would not be sad for them? It shows you have a real heart my friend, so don't put yourself down for it, and don't listen to those who say we need to be happy ALL the time. It's not natural to be happy all the time, it's just not realistic. The good news is we can have peace in our sorrow, and it should be faith building because, God is the one who puts that burden on our hearts to care and pray for the lost. The unsaved just don't do that! So chin up, keep caring and praying for the lost, it's shows your love for them and your love for God. Your doing fine. How often do we contemplate their plight and destiny without anguish of heart? Should we not be ashamed, that we could contemplate these souls, lost to eternity, that it does not rend our very hearts from our chests! Oh Lord! Give us that sacrificial love, which you expressed, and exposed, to our hearts, at the Cross of Christ! For your sake, and for your glory, dear Lord, give us Agape, and a deeper loving and caring heart, that we should quake with broken hearts, at the very thought of our enemy, on their ever downward spiral to perdition! – Keep caring and keep praying God bless John |

268 | Curious about meaning of John 20:22,23 | John | stjohn | 210237
Hi lost without Him: I think John Gill says it pretty well, so I'll just let him do the talking on this one. God bless John --"Verse 22. And when he had said this,.... That is, declared he sent them forth in like manner as his Father sent him: he breathed on them; in allusion to God's breathing the breath of life into man, at his creation; or rather, to the Spirit himself, who is the breath of God, and proceeds from him, as from the Father; and who breathes both upon persons in regeneration, and in qualifying for ministerial service, at the instance and influence of Christ: and such an opinion the Jews have of the Spirit of the Messiah, who say that, "the Spirit went from between the wings of the cherubim, "and breathed upon him" (Menasseh) by the decree, or order of the word of the Lord." And saith unto them, receive ye the Holy Ghost; meaning not the grace of the Holy Ghost in regeneration, which they had received already; but the gifts of the Spirit, to qualify them for the work he now sent them to do, and which were not now actually bestowed; but this breathing on them, and the words that attended it, were a symbol, pledge, and confirmation, of what they were to receive on the day of Pentecost: hence it appears, that it is the Spirit of God, who, by his gifts and grace, makes and qualifies men to be ministers of the Gospel; and our Lord by this action, and these words, gives a very considerable proof of his deity: the Papists show their impudence and wickedness, in imitating Christ by their insufflations, or breathing on men; pretending thereby to convey the Holy Spirit to them. Verse 23. "Whose soever sins ye remit",.... God only can forgive sins, and Christ being God, has a power to do so likewise; but he never communicated any such power to his apostles; nor did they ever assume any such power to themselves, or pretend to exercise it; it is the mark of antichrist, to attempt anything of the kind; who, in so doing, usurps the divine prerogative, places himself in his seat, and shows himself as if he was God: but this is to be understood only in a doctrinal, or ministerial way, by preaching the full and free remission of sins, through the blood of Christ, according to the riches of God's grace, to such as repent of their sins, and believe in Christ; declaring, that all such persons as do so repent and believe, all their sins are forgiven for Christ's sake: and accordingly, they are remitted unto them; in agreement with Christ's own words, in his declaration and commission to his disciples; see Mr 16:16. On the other hand he signifies that, whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained: that is, that whatsoever sins ye declare are not forgiven, they are not forgiven; which is the case of all final unbelievers, and impenitent sinners; who dying without repentance towards God, and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, according to the Gospel declaration, shall be damned, and are damned; for God stands by, and will stand by and confirm the Gospel of his Son, faithfully preached by his ministering servants; and all the world will sooner or later be convinced of the validity, truth, and certainty, of the declarations on each of these heads, made by them."--John Gill http://eword.gospelcom.net/comments/john/gill |

271 | appointment of pastors in the church | 1 Tim 3:11 | stjohn | 209798
Hi dbondz: Welcome to the forum! 1 Tim 3:1-7 gives the guidelines for overseers, or what we would call today, pastors. Then v8-13 goes on to describe the qualifications for deacons and, In regard to woman v11 does not describe exactly what office a women may serve in (see Phill 1:1) but simply stats she must be, “dignified, not a malicious gossip, but temperate and faithful in all things”. Though she does fall in the text of describing deacons. Note, that Romans 16:1 speaks of, “our sister Phoebe, who is a servant of the church” Acts 6:2 also show’s us that pastors should devote their time to the study of god’s word, to better instruct others. This is where women, elders, deacons, sunday-school-teachers and the like, can really help a pastor better preform his duties. I hope this helped you. God bless John |

272 | Did Jesus heal everyone? | 2 Cor 12:9 | stjohn | 209774
Because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, for this reason, to keep me from exalting myself, there was given me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me--to keep me from exalting myself! Concerning this I implored the Lord three times that it might leave me. And He has said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness." Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. Therefore I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christ's sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong. 2 Cor 12:7-10 He turned the Apostle Paul down, three times. And Paul, who by the power of God had raised the dead; in communication with Timothy; Did not heal him by this power of God imputed to him. So why then did he tell Timothy, to take something for his stomach, instead of just telling him to have faith and, God would heal him? John |

273 | Will every man hear the gospel? | Ps 19:1 | stjohn | 209728
Hi Psalmist: Welcome to the forum! Those are tough questions! But good questions... Ironically, Psalmist, I believe at least part of the answer may be in Psalms. God reveals his Glory to mankind through what is called "General Revelation" i.e. "The heavens are telling of the glory of God; And their expanse is declaring the work of His hands." Ps 19:1 The Bible, God's Word, is in the realm of what is called "Special Revelation" It is God's love-letter to mankind. And we are indeed commanded by the Lord to take it's massage of salvation the whole Earth. "And He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. Mark16:15 I believe the Gospel is being preached in all the world, maybe not in all languages yet, but it's getting closer to that high mark all the time. It has been translated into literately hundreds of languages and dialects throughout the world. You know I don't know how God will deal with the man who has never had the opportunity to hear His Word. But I'd rather be in his shoe's on the day of judgment then, the man who has sat in a pew for years and years hearing the word and, not done anything about it. :-( Why does he say we are chosen if he is impartial? I don't think He gave us the answer to that one. God bless John |

275 | What does God owe the Devil? | Luke 4:6 | stjohn | 209520
Hi Finder: Nice to see you my friend, it's been a while since we've seen you here at SBF. Welcome. :-) First I don't think God really give satin the world, in a sense WE DID! Or should I say Adam's sin did. God gave dominion of the Earth to Adam. "Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth." Gen 1:26 But when Adam fell into sin, Gen 3:1-7 that dominion was taken away Gen 3:8-24 and a void left for satin. Why did God allow this? I don't know. But Man doesn't really need satin to show him how to be evil. as it is written, "THERE IS NONE RIGHTEOUS, NOT EVEN ONE; THERE IS NONE WHO UNDERSTANDS, THERE IS NONE WHO SEEKS FOR GOD; ALL HAVE TURNED ASIDE, TOGETHER THEY HAVE BECOME USELESS; THERE IS NONE WHO DOES GOOD, THERE IS NOT EVEN ONE." "THEIR THROAT IS AN OPEN GRAVE, WITH THEIR TONGUES THEY KEEP DECEIVING," "THE POISON OF ASPS IS UNDER THEIR LIPS"; "WHOSE MOUTH IS FULL OF CURSING AND BITTERNESS"; "THEIR FEET ARE SWIFT TO SHED BLOOD, DESTRUCTION AND MISERY ARE IN THEIR PATHS, AND THE PATH OF PEACE THEY HAVE NOT KNOWN." "THERE IS NO FEAR OF GOD BEFORE THEIR EYES." Rom 3:10-18 As far as getting rid of him for our sake? Well, he sent His Son for our sake! :-) John 3:16 And that's the Good news! And he will "get rid of him" that's for sure! Rev 20:10 Don't worry so much about satin, how about, who Jesus is to you, and what He did for you! Is He your saviour? God bless John |

Hi Malisa: What happened to the rich man, how did he live and how did he end up? And what happened to Lazarus? What was the story about? Did the rich man end up okay with God at the end of his life of luxury in which he did not care about the poor man, Lazarus? Can you tell me what you think? Have you read it? We would be happy to help you understand it, if you have some specific questions. It's really a very short read Malisa, only 12 verses long. :-) God bless you in your studies. John |

Hi begbie: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and will all your soul and with all your mind" Jesus is quoting from the Old Tenement, and it is the first of The Ten Commandments of God. Hers is a link to a very good commentary that will explain it for you very well. http://www.freegrace.net/gill/ If this is homework, be sure to use your own words, or if you "quote" it directly, make sure you "cite your source" (i.e. John Gill) and give it as a "quote". Your teacher will appreciate this! :-) God bless John |

279 | this city is the pot and we the flesh? | Ezek 11:3 | stjohn | 208954
Hello, Bro.! A warm welcome to SBF! What is being implied in Ezek 11:3 is that they, (the wicked leaders) are somehow being protected and feeling quite safe from siege, as the brass would separate the meat from the flame, from being burned. See, also in, Jer 1:13 where is seen a, boiling pot, facing "away" from the north, from whence destruction is imminent. If I may, suggest a couple good commentaries. http://www.freegrace.net/gill/ And http://eword.gospelcom.net/comments/ezekiel/jfb/ezekiel11.htm God bless John |

280 | speckled and spotted sheep | Genesis | stjohn | 208942
Hi Smalltiny, Well, thats a very good question, and one that just about everyone who reads that would like to know. But the Bible just doesn't tell us how it happened, but we can be sure it was not because of what the schemer Jacob did, it was from God, for only by His providential hand could it be done. So we cam be sure it was something God did and not something Jacob did that caused the sheep to be born with strips and spots. God and God alone can preform miracles. I hope this helps. But this is one of those, Duet 29:29 things, "The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our sons forever, that we may observe all the words of this law. Deut 29:29 God just doesn't reveal this to us. God bless John |
