Greetings MrsBeverly! Welcome to the Study Bible Forum! May I ask, what class this is? Acts 17:28 (NASB) for in Him we live and move and exist, as even some of your own poets have said, 'For we also are His children.' - Supposedly he quoted the Greek poet Aratus —http://www.wscal.edu/faculty/wscwritings/commongrace.php Titus 1:12 (NASB95) One of themselves, a prophet of their own, said, "Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons." - Supposedly he quoted from Epimenides, a Cretan poet and philosopher from the sixth century b.c.—Bible Knowledge Commentary 1 Corinthians 15:33 (NASB95) Do not be deceived: "Bad company corrupts good morals." - Supposedly he quoted the pagan writer Menander. —http://www.wscal.edu/faculty/wscwritings/commongrace.php Acts 26:14b "...It is hard for you to kick against the goads." 263 | How does grace teach us? | Titus 2:12 | humbledbyhisgrace | 182173
Greetings Brother! Hebrews 12:7-11 is one passage we can look at for consideration. Verse 10 Hebrews 12:10 (NASB95) For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but He disciplines us for our good, so that we may share His holiness. In regards to your question verse 10 stands out to me as it compares our earthly fathers discipline as something that seemed best to them. In comparison to God's discipline which is for our own good so we may share His holiness. It is truly a gracious God willing to share His holiness with us wouldn't you agree? And He is willing to discipline us to ensure we share in His holiness! Below information was copied from the blueletterbible.com web site Outline of Biblical Usage 1) grace a) that which affords joy, pleasure, delight, sweetness, charm, loveliness: grace of speech 2) good will, loving-kindness, favour a) of the merciful kindness by which God, exerting his holy influence upon souls, turns them to Christ, keeps, strengthens, increases them in Christian faith, knowledge, affection, and kindles them to the exercise of the Christian virtues 3) what is due to grace a) the spiritual condition of one governed by the power of divine grace b) the token or proof of grace, benefit 1) a gift of grace 2) benefit, bounty 4) thanks, (for benefits, services, favours), recompense, reward Interesting question Brother! Our Father truly loves us Amen! By Faith, Steve |

264 | psychic vs prophet difference | Heb 1:1 | humbledbyhisgrace | 205712
The difference is God spoke to the prophets! Hebrews 1:1-2 (NASB) 1:1 God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, 1:2 in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world. Steve |

266 | How to convince someone to go to church | Heb 10:25 | humbledbyhisgrace | 207258
Greetings CCc, One passage of scripture I think might help is Ephesians chapter 4. This passage is rich in it's teaching and the beauty of being a part of the body of Christ. Spend some time reading through this chapter and prayer. I think it will help you in your understanding and therefor possibly give you wisdom when speaking with your friend on the matter. Also, other passage of scripture regarding the gifts of the Spirit (1 Corinthians 12, Romans 12) should help. I will pray with you for your friend. You, continue to be the encourager and set the example and pray! God bless, Steve |

267 | Hebrews10:26-31 | Heb 10:26 | humbledbyhisgrace | 212308
Hi Crystal, Welcome to the Study Bible Forum! I see you have received some good responses to your question and I hope you will prayerfully consider what everyone has shared with you. I wanted to take the opportunity to share with you also because God's grace is so amazing and your need for Him is essential. God the Father sent God the Son (Jesus) to be the Saviour of the world (1 John 4:14). It is only through the Son that God's plan of salvation is accomplished (Acts 4:12, John 14:6) We were born into sin and therefore dead in sin, separated from God our Creator (1 Corinthians 15:22 , Ephesians 2:12) In our sinful nature, we suppress the truth of God in unrighteousness even though that which is known about God is evident within us. (Romans 1:18-23 , Romans 3:9-20). But God, in His grace took the initiative to reconcile mankind to Himself through the sinless life and death of His only begotten Son (John 3:16, Ephesians 2:4-10, Romans 3:21-24). God the Father sent His Son (Jesus) to free us from sin (Romans 6:6-7, Romans 6:17-18) and to give to those who believe in Him the right to be children of God (John 1:12). Jesus shed blood in sacrifice satisfied the demands of God's divine justice. God the Father confirmed in the resurrection of the Son that the sacrifice of the Son is complete and sufficient for the sins of the world (Matthew 28, John 20:19-22, 1 Corinthians 15:3-8, 1 John 2:2). Jesus paid the debt owed to God for our sins (Matthew 20:28, Colossians 2:13-14) and by God's grace, those who believe in Christ Jesus are justified as a gift and have peace with God and are reconciled back to Him(Romans 3:22-25, Romans 5:1, 2 Corinthians 5:18-19, Colossians 1:20-22). Crystal, you are no different then any of the rest of us. We were all sinners just like you and desperate for a Saviour. There is not one born again Christian that has anything to boast about or claim they have done on their own. Each and every one of us who has been saved has been saved by the grace of God through faith (Ephesians 2:8-10). In 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 Paul says (15:3)"For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, (15:4) and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures And Paul says in Romans 10:9-10 (10:9) that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved (10:10) for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation. Crystal, we are simply benefactors of His grace. Without Him, it would indeed be to late for you and me and for everyone else! Trust in Him and all that He has revealed to us in His word! God bless, Steve |

268 | Why Is James Book So Different? | James | humbledbyhisgrace | 207294
tumbleweed, Below is the intro from the electronic version of the ESV translation I have on my computer. Also, there are a couple of links below. Read through what is said there and it might help. I'm sure there is more that can be said on this and lot's of references to comb through. Commonly referred to as "the Proverbs of the New Testament," the book of James practically and faithfully reminds Christians how to live. From perseverance to true faith to controlling one's tongue, submitting to God's will, and having patience, this book aids readers in living authentically and wisely for Christ. One of the earliest of the New Testament writings (a.d. 40–50), it is believed to have been written by Jesus' brother James. Many have claimed that James and the apostle Paul differed on the question of faith versus works, but in reality the spiritual fruit that James talks about—the picture of what faith looks like practically—demonstrates the true faith of which Paul wrote. Their writings are complementary rather than contradictory. - Intro from the electronic version of the ESV. http://www.gotquestions.org/Book-of-James.html http://www.angelfire.com/nt/theology/js-intr.html Steve |

271 | How do you guys fight temptation? | James 5:16 | humbledbyhisgrace | 165734
Here is another good verse to think about and to go along with the other good scriptures and points that have been shared with you. Psalm 119:11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. Ocelot and Mark both pointed out the importance of the Word of God. Psalm 119:11 is another scripture that points to this importance. Read it, study it, learn it, know it and never stop! Keep in mind, Jesus is our example. His life gives us an awesome example of how to live and handle things we will be faced with. If you will, take a look back at Mark's post and read again the scriptures he listed (Matthew 4:3-10). Notice what Jesus did? He used scripture to fight against the temptations He was faced with. If this is what our Lord would do, then we should follow His example with confidence. Remember, there is power in the word of God (Hebrews 4:12) Your brother in Christ, Steve |

272 | Jesus' sake rather than in Jesus' name? | 1 Pet 3:14 | humbledbyhisgrace | 193815
Greetings Huron, Perhaps for your own edification you should ask your Pastor what he means by this and not assume there is something to quibble about. Allow him to explain it to you! Consider this passage of scripture 1 Peter 3:13-17 1 Peter 3:13-17 (NASB) 3:13 Who is there to harm you if you prove zealous for what is good? 3:14 But even if you should suffer for the sake of righteousness, you are blessed. AND DO NOT FEAR THEIR INTIMIDATION, AND DO NOT BE TROUBLED, 3:15 but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence; 3:16 and keep a good conscience so that in the thing in which you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ will be put to shame. 3:17 For it is better, if God should will it so, that you suffer for doing what is right rather than for doing what is wrong. or this example in scripture Philippians 2:25-30 (NASB) 2:25 But I thought it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother and fellow worker and fellow soldier, who is also your messenger and minister to my need; 2:26 because he was longing for you all and was distressed because you had heard that he was sick. 2:27 For indeed he was sick to the point of death, but God had mercy on him, and not on him only but also on me, so that I would not have sorrow upon sorrow. 2:28 Therefore I have sent him all the more eagerly so that when you see him again you may rejoice and I may be less concerned about you. 2:29 Receive him then in the Lord with all joy, and hold men like him in high regard; 2:30 because he came close to death for the work of Christ, risking his life to complete what was deficient in your service to me. I can't speak for your Pastor but if he is a man of God I'm confident what he means when he says "for Jesus' sake" he is aligning with Jesus' cause, his purpose so to speak. Steve |

273 | Explain the meaning of 2 peter 1:13 | 2 Pet 1:13 | humbledbyhisgrace | 191150
Greetings Russell41! Welcome to the Study Bible Forum! The "tent" is referring to this earthly body. See also 2 Cor. 5:1, 4 See verse 12 for an explanation of what Peter is talking about regarding "stir you up". Also, notice Peter says in verse 12 "though you know them and are established in the truth that you have." (NASB) Therefore, we must agree with scripture and say yes! there is a "benefit to reminding people". We see here in this passage of the word of God that it is so. Peter, who was lead by the Holy Spirit to write these words clearly points out in verse 8 and 9 the importance. See verses 3-7 of what Peter is "stirring" them up / reminding them of. Go back and read the passage from verse 3-15 to put it all in context. God bless, Steve |

274 | I'm Confused! | 1 John 1:9 | humbledbyhisgrace | 211780
Greetings reedera4! Welcome to the Study Bible Forum! I understand your confusion! Let me see if I can help. Personally, I think it's a great error to teach we are not told to ask for forgiveness or that it's not taught in scripture. Sorry one of your pastors of all people would create such confusion for you. Does Scripture teach us to ask for forgiveness? Yes indeed it does! Matthew 6:12 (NASB) And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. See Matthew 6:14-15 also for context. Luke 11:4 (NASB) And forgive us our sins, For we ourselves also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation. 1 John 1:9 (NASB) If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. "Confess" in this passage means to "acknowledge" the sin. Or "profess" the sin. It is unreasonable to apply the meaning that asking God for forgiveness of the sin is wrong. There is nothing in the passage to teach that and it contradicts Matthew 6:12 and Luke 11:4 which clearly teach that we are to ask forgiveness. What must be understood in all these verses is that fellowship with God is in view here, not salvation. I fear we are more of a "clanging noise" in the ear of God with the nonsense we push on others. I'm sorry you have been left so confused on this considering it's importance and I hope this helps! Steve |

275 | Greater Love | 1 John 4:7 | humbledbyhisgrace | 164591
Be Like Christ! Philippians 2 is one why I could point to scripture to explain my thoughts. Mainly Philippians 2:7-9. From the day I was saved the Lord has laid on my heart the importance of the cross and what He did there. From that day the reading and hearing of His word has taught me just how dependent I am on Him. Understanding these things and looking back at my own self I see just how lost and empty I was before. When I see others now I can honestly say I feel compassion for them more then anything else (Who would you say gave me compassion?) I realize I was just as blind and helpless without Him (referring to the lost). Also, when I see a brother or sister stumble I only have to look back at my self and it doesn’t take long to realize that even standing in His grace we struggle with our corrupted self. It’s a constant reminder we need Him more then I think we realize some times. So for me, it was and continues to be a humbling experience. I could not love another like I do if it was not for God Himself giving me this ability and compassion. I know this because I know who I use to be and I can see the change He has made in my life. How to increase the love? Never forget what our Lord and Saviour did on the cross and continue to look to His example! Pray that He will increase our love for one another! I do confess that Jesus Christ is Lord! God bless! Steve |

276 | what is faith that overcomes | 1 John 5:5 | humbledbyhisgrace | 187548
Greetings tichman! And welcome to the Study Bible Forum! To sum it up, it is faith in the Lord Jesus Christ! He is the one who overcame the world! In Him, we too have overcome! Helpless, desperate, completely unable on our own, we are in need of a saviour! And we have one! Amen! It is Jesus! Here’s a good place to start. 1 John 5:4-5 (ESV) 4 For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world— our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? Faith in the Lord Jesus is absolutely essential! (John 3:16, Romans 10:9, 1 Corinthians 15:3-4, etc…). Do you believe Jesus is the Son of God? Do you believe that God raised Him from the dead? Do you confess Him as your Lord? By Faith, Steve |

279 | The two witnesses | Revelation | humbledbyhisgrace | 186870
Greetings GE! Here is what the Bible Knowledge Commentary has to say. Maybe this will help! The Ministry Of The Two Witnesses (11:3-6) 11:3-6. It was revealed to John that the two witnesses would be empowered by God to serve as prophets for 1,260 days or 42 months. They would be clothed in sackcloth and would be called two olive trees and two lampstands. Numerous and varied interpretations have been given concerning the two witnesses. Some have suggested that they are not literal individuals. However, in view of the fact that they die and are resurrected, the implication is that they are actual people. Another problem is their identification. A common interpretation is that they are Moses and Elijah because the judgments inflicted by Moses and Elijah in the Old Testament are similar to those of these two witnesses (11:5-6). Further support is given the identification of Elijah because of the prediction (Mal. 4:5) that he will appear “before that great and dreadful day of the Lord comes.” Christ said this prophecy of Elijah was partially fulfilled in His lifetime (Matt. 17:10-13; Mark 9:11-13; cf. Luke 1:17). And both Moses and Elijah were involved in the transfiguration (Matt. 17:3), which anticipated the Second Coming. But a problem with this suggested identity is that Moses had already died once. Some have identified the two witnesses as Enoch and Elijah inasmuch as they did not die but were translated (cf. Heb. 9:27). While there is room for considerable discussion of these various views, the fact is that the passage does not identify the two witnesses, and they probably do not have historic identification. The description of the two witnesses as olive trees and lampstands has an Old Testament background (Zech. 4:2-14). The two witnesses in this passage were Joshua the high priest and Zerubbabel the governor. Their connection to the lampstands was that they were empowered by the Holy Spirit, symbolized by the olive oil. In a similar way the two witnesses of Revelation 11 will be empowered by the Holy Spirit. Like prophets of old the two witnesses will be able to do supernatural miracles, and fire will destroy those who will try to harm them (Rev. 11:5). Like Elijah they will have power to stop rain, and will have power like Moses to turn water into blood and to bring on plagues (v. 6). In the midst of the unbelief, apostasy, and satanic power of the Great Tribulation these two witnesses will be a threat to the entire wicked world for a literal period of 1,260 days. —Bible Knowledge Commentary By Faith Brother, Steve |
