21 | what was the origine of sunday worship? | NT general Archive 1 | djconklin | 28306
The latter is correct. Historical evidence indicates that most of the early church kept the Sabbath till at least the 5th century. If the day of worship was changed by fiat of either the apostles or the church then this is not understandable. If, on the other hand, the change was a reaction to external events and that latter the whole church changed over then it is understandable but still unbiblical. Neither the church nor the apostles had the right to change any of God's holy laws. |

22 | How did Noah know about clean animals? | Genesis | djconklin | 25863
Since God told Noah to gather the animals then Noah must have known before hand what was clean and what was unclean (Gen. 7:2). We assume that simply because it wasn't written down till later that it wasn't known before that time. In fact, oral tradition works quite well with details preserved for a long period of time. For instance, in the NT Gospels the pericope ab't the woman caught in the act of adultery wasn't written down in any of the gospels till the mid-4th century in Armenia mss. It is accepted, in part, because it bears all the ear-marks of being an oral tradition that was handed down through the centuries from the time of Christ.

"if one is hungry, why raid garbage cans looking for food, when God has a feast (His Word, the 66 books that make up the Bible) prepared for whosoever will come and partake?" Amen! Excellant point kalos! |

25 | Dietary value of dietary laws? | Leviticus | djconklin | 31877
Even if pigs are thoroughly cooked that simply means that one is eating the cooked trichinosis worm, the cysts of the young and does not deal with any of the other problems with eating pork (btw, I used to love pork chops!). A search of the web will reveal a large number of sources as to the medical value of following the dietary laws of the Bible. A local Christian church that does keep them converted a Jew who was in bad health because he was not following the health laws of the Bible and they pointed that out to him that that was the cause of his ill health--he became intirgued and converted to Christianity.
26 | 1Ki 7:23 apparent error measuring sea | 1 Kin 7:23 | djconklin | 28341
It is possible that the circumference was measured internally--it helps to know how it was built. What they did was to create a huge clay "mound" of the internal shape of the bowl. They then covered the outside with wax. Then they put a coat of clay on the outside with some holes left at the bottom. Then they poured molten brass in the top and this melted the wax that then ran out the holes at the bottom. Once the brass hardens they take off the outside layer of clay, flip the bowl over and haul it to the Temple. The only problem I see with Missler's (what was the source?) approach is that 111/106 doesn't come up to 1.415, it is 1.04717 (which is still awfully close considering the level of technology of the day). But, I don't know where he is getting the 105 figure from in the first place, either. That there could be a missing jot over time would not be surprising (and is frequently used to solve other little numerical problems) and doesn't have to be completely missing from some mss either--the little jots and titles are very small (it is no wonder some people ruined their eyesight trying to read Hebrew!), it could have been very faded when the mss was copied. The approach I took was that the critics had to make a number of assumptions in order to sustain their claim. The full picture can be seen at http://biblestudy.iwarp.com |

28 | turtle / turtle-dove | Song 2:12 | djconklin | 28342
In the KJV it has "voice of the turtle" and some Bible critics have used it against the Bible. Both of the above have it correct. So, why did the KJV use the word "tutle"? Well, if look up the word "turtle" in the Oxford English Dictionary (the multi-volume work) you'll find that many English writers used the word "turtle" as a metaphor for "turtle-dove". If you look at Shakespeare you'll find that he wrote a play in 1611 in which he did the same thing!
29 | turtle / turtle-dove | Song 2:12 | djconklin | 28458
You are correct Nolan in comparing many translations. I learned a long time ago how powerful an analytical tool compare and contrast can be.
30 | turtle-dove | Song 2:12 | djconklin | 64858
In the KJV it says "the voice of the turtle" which has caused some Bible critics to scoff. The NASB is correct in this regard and the Hebrew does mean "turtle-dove". Shakespeare also wrote a play (A Winter's Tale) in 1611 in which he talked ab't the cooing of turtles that will never part.
31 | Why was Jesus named “Jesus”? | Is 7:14 | djconklin | 25814
Capitalizations are from the translators. In the Hebrew all you'd have are the consonants till the vowel pointing was put in to make what we now call the Masoretic text (MT).
32 | Does "'almah" mean "virgin"? | Is 7:14 | djconklin | 25815
If you happen to run into people who claim that the word "almah" in Isa. 7:14 and not "virgin", or that Matthew mis-translated it I have gathered all of the available evidence in one place at http://biblestudy.iwarp.com
33 | Why was Jesus named “Jesus”? | Is 7:14 | djconklin | 25877
"The Hebrew was in all CAPS ..." Are you sure you're not thinking of the Greek? As far as I know the Hebrew consonants are only one size (very small! And the vowel pointing is even worse!). For a sample (and much blown up!) example of Hebrew see http://www.wts.edu/hebrew/index.html You read it from right to left the first letter (looks like our "W") would be an "S"; the next letter is an "M" and the last letter that looks like a "Y" is "ayin"--I don't have any of my books here so I can't help on the vowel pointing. |

Ed, It can be difficult a few times in some books. Whne I was learning Greek I would write in pencil the literal meaning of each word till I finished with each verse. Then I take a pen and re-write the Greek into a decent English sentance. While I'm doing all that I'd be checking a number of lexicons and other translations to make sure I was right. After awhile I didn't have to check other translations because it became fairly obvious what the writer was saying. But, I still recall the day I ran into a verse where I looked at the penciled words of one verse (in the entire quarter no less and we did 15-20 per day) and said to myself "There's no way you can make that into a decent English sentance!". So, I checked a dozen translations and found that they were all different too! I figured even the experts couldn't figure that one out. |

36 | Does "'almah" mean "virgin"? | Is 7:14 | djconklin | 27886
Nolan, You may find, as I did, that there is actually an abundance of evidence supporting the idea that "'almah" meant virgin. Well, I better cut this short lest I be accused once more of "blah, blah, blah". |

"I think DJConklin is mixing the how Tyndale came up the word Jehovah out of the tetragram YHWH rather than addressing the word Jesus." I wasn't thinking of that at all. |

"or "Learn Greek in Only 15 Minutes a Day"." Actually, you'd probably be amazed at the number of Greek words you already know (I'm working on compiling a list, last count I had about 30-40 words)! According to one of my NT profs (who when he referred us to the Bible we could tell that he was reading straight from the Greek) that if we practiced 15 minutes a day based on what we were taught we could do the same as he could. One of the bomnes I'd pick with most translators/translations is that even a modicum of research shows that they goofed in places. |
