161 | Questions for reflection and comment | Matt 26:45 | New Creature | 110835
Mommapbs; See if this helps you in any way. Verse 45. Sleep on now, and take your rest Perhaps it might be better to read these words interrogatively, and paraphrase them thus: Do ye sleep on still? Will no warnings avail? Will no danger excite you to watchfulness and prayer? My hour-in which I am to be delivered up, is at hand; therefore now think of your own personal safety. (Adam Clarke Commentary) Verse 45 Then cometh he to the disciples, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest; behold the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. The expression "sleep on now ..." is difficult, for, almost in the same moment, he said, "Arise, let us be going" (Matthew 26:46). Dummelow viewed it as reproachful irony, i.e., "You have slept through my agony; sleep also through my betrayal and capture." Broadus viewed the passage as a permissive imperative. He has no further need of their keeping awake; his struggles in the solitude close by are past. So far as concerns the object for which he desired them to watch and pray, they may now yield to sleep. To be sure, they did not long enjoy the permission. Immediately, perhaps even as he spoke, came the sudden onset of his arrest and capture. (Coffman Commentaries) Verse 45. Sleep on now, and take your rest. Most interpreters have supposed that this should be translated as a question, rather than a command. "Do you sleep now, and take your rest? Is this a time, amidst so much danger, and so many enemies, to give yourselves to sleep?" This construction is strongly countenanced by Luke, Luke 22:46,) where the expression, "Why sleep ye?" evidently refers to the same point of time. There is no doubt that the Greek will bear this construction; and in this way the apparent inconsistency will be removed between this command, to sleep, and that in the next verse, to rise and be going. Others suppose that, his agony being over, and the necessity of watching with him being now passed, he kindly permitted them to seek repose till they should be roused by the coming of the traitor; that, while they slept, Jesus continued still awake; that some considerable time elapsed between what was spoken here and in the next verse; and that Jesus suffered them to sleep until he saw Judas coming, and then aroused them. Others have supposed that he spoke this in irony: "Sleep on now, if you can; take rest, if possible, in such dangers, and at such a time." But this supposition is unworthy of the Saviour and the occasion. Mark adds, "It is enough." That is, sufficient time has been given to sleep. It is time to arise and be going. The hour is at hand. The time when the Son of man is to be betrayed is near. (Barnes' Notes on the New Testament) Blessings New Creature |

162 | Where does it say that? | Mark | New Creature | 141547
greetings kalos: I think the idea foe the thought "'God cannot look upon sin" may possibly come from the following verse of the OT Hab. 1:13 Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity: wherefore lookest thou upon them that deal treacherously, and holdest thy tongue when the wicked devoureth the man that is more righteous than he? 163 | What is unpardonable sin? | Mark 3:22 | New Creature | 138590
Below is a portion of an interesting article I came across a while back. I don't remember the source. But read it and and tell me what you think. "Now suppose that I see the light from the lamp of God's Word, but refuse to obey it. Let's say that the Holy Spirit has convicted me, and I understand perfectly what He requires of me, but it is unpopular and inconvenient. What happens if I disregard the light and reject the truth which the Spirit has revealed - for any reason whatsoever? The Spirit continues to speak, of course, and for a time there is a battle in my conscience. I feel miserable and guilty. Days pass by, and even months, while I keep on violating my conviction of what is right. Gradually, the conscience begins to adjust to what is being done in the physical body. Slowly the guilt feelings begin to subside and the acts of disobedience appear less and less objectionable. Finally, the truth which seemed so clear and uncomplicated in the beginning turns into a muddle of uncertainty. Rationalizations spring forth to justify disobedience, and the early convictions of sin fade away. Life is almost as comfortable as it was before the light came. What has happened? We have sinned against the Holy Spirit and are sinking into the state of the unpardonable sin. You see, this deadly sin is not any particular act which can be isolated and labeled. It can be any sin which is cherished in the face of light and knowledge. It actually is a condition of seared sensitivity brought on by persistent disobedience to recognized truth. The reaction is similar to ignoring an alarm clock. The conscience becomes more and more tolerant of the pricking reminder of transgression until, finally, it no longer even recognizes the unwelcome sting of conviction. Like the clock it runs down, too, and just as well, because no one is listening any longer. Continual, willful disobedience disqualifies one to be Spirit-filled. This remarkable representative of God is offended when His primary function is denied. His very nature is to make sin appear exceedingly sinful. Sin cannot comfortably remain where the Holy Spirit abides. Either the sin is renounced or the Spirit finally will be rejected and depart. Refusing to walk in the light does not bring an immediate separation from God, but persistent disobedience continues to harden the conscience to the seriousness of sin. That state of darkness developed by repeated violation of known truth is what we refer to as the unpardonable sin." |

1John 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. 8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us [our] sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. |

166 | Romans2:14 Can Nonbelievers goto Heaven? | Mark 10:18 | New Creature | 103225
jultox The non-believers and atheist's final eternal destination will be the "lake of fire" Revelation 21:8 But the .... unbelieving, ... shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. People don't go to heaven based upon their good deeds, or because they think they are good. Salvation cannot be earned. It is not by works or good deeds that a person becomes saved. But rather by faith in Christ Jesus. Unless a person has a personal relationship with Jesus he cannot ever enter the kingdom of heaven. Salvation is a free gift which is offered universally to all who will receive it by faith. Eph 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Eph 2:9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. Without being born-again (spiritually) a person cannot enter heaven John 3:5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. The following is about a person who thought he was accepted by God and looked down upon another Luke 18:9 And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others:b Luke 18:10 Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. Luke 18:11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. Luke 18:12 I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. Luke 18:13 And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. Luke 18:14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted. Everyone is born with an inherited sin nature. When a person is convicted, or convinced by God and agrees with God that he is a sinner and repents and receives Christ as Savior, he can now say he has hope of entering heaven when this life is ended Peace be unto you New Creature |

168 | What are God's "things?" | Mark 12:17 | New Creature | 116165
1 Cor. 2:11 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. 1 Cor. 2:12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. 1 Cor. 2:13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. 1 Cor. 2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. Some of the things of God, are the mind of God, discernment, wisdom, knowledge, through God's Spirit, we also become aware of our need of a Savior, and of our lost condition. Our need of salvation, etc. Col. 3:1 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Col. 3:2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. Things above - things heavenly, things eternal that moth or rust cannot corrode, things which fully satisfy the child of God. As in contrast to the things of earth which are temporary and can never fully satisfy |

169 | Why isn't my church growing in numbers? | Mark 16:15 | New Creature | 183632
We don't like to admit it but we can become complacent, and complacency amounts to lukewarmness. Being wealthy and intellectual can result in becoming complacent. We need to always be willing to examine and guard ourselves against becoming lukewarm. Lukewarmness can be individual or corperate. Rev 3:14 And to the angel of the church in Laodicea write: These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God: Rev 3:15 I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. Rev 3:16 So because thou art lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spew thee out of my mouth. Rev 3:17 Because THOU SAYEST, I AM RICH, AND HAVE GOTTEN RICHES, AND HAVE NEED OF NOTHING, AND KNOWEST NOT THAT THOU ART the wretched one and miserable and POOR and blind and naked: Rev 3:18 I counsel thee to buy of me gold refined by fire, that thou mayest become rich; and white garments, that thou mayest clothe thyself, and that the shame of thy nakedness be not made manifest; and eyesalve to anoint thine eyes, that thou mayest see. Rev 3:19 As many as I love, I reprove and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent. Rev 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock: if any man hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. Rev 3:21 He that overcometh, I will give to him to sit down with me in my throne, as I also overcame, and sat down with my Father in his throne. Rev 3:22 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith to the churches. |

170 | Can a person push God too far?? | Luke | New Creature | 54948
His patience toward those who "keep on backsliding," is limited ( SEE - Jer. 15:6; Hosea 11:7) You keep on backsliding. So I will lay hands on you and destroy you; I can no longer show compassion. (Jer. 15:6) NIV Backslidding, or drifting from the faith (Heb.2:1) can also be Grieving (or saddening) the Holy Spirit (Eph. 4:30). Lukewarmness sets in, Rev 3:15-16… Continued backslidding results in the conscience becoming seared (1 Tim. 4:2) and the heart becoming caloused and hardened (Heb 3:13). Then we quench (1 Thess.5:19) (put out) the Holy Spirit's spark of spiritual life that He began within us. |

171 | Are Miracles Possible? | Luke | New Creature | 98492
Hank Miracles are definitely possible, and occur all the time. Each time a person becomes a new creation in Christ Jesus, that is a miracle. (2 Cor. 5:17) The new birth is a most marvelous miracle. When spiritual life is imparted to the one who was spiritually dead. Then that is a miracle that only God can accomplish. Thank God that He performed a miracle in my life, and in your life as well. 173 | Is there a prophet named Sidian? | Luke 2:25 | New Creature | 163929
I think you may be referring to Simeon. See below. It was revealed to him that he would not die until he had seen the Christ. Luke 2:25 And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; and this man was righteous and devout, looking for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Spirit was upon him. Luke 2:26 And it had been revealed unto him by the Holy Spirit, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ. Luke 2:27 And he came in the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, that they might do concerning him after the custom of the law, Luke 2:28 then he received him into his arms, and blessed God, and said, Luke 2:29 Now lettest thou thy servant depart, Lord, According to thy word, in peace; Luke 2:30 For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, Luke 2:31 Which thou hast prepared before the face of all peoples; Luke 2:32 A light for revelation to the Gentiles, And the glory of thy people Israel. Luke 2:33 And his father and his mother were marvelling at the things which were spoken concerning him; Luke 2:34 and Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the falling and the rising of many in Israel; and for a sign which is spoken against; Luke 2:35 yea and a sword shall pierce through thine own soul; that thoughts out of many hearts may be revealed. |

174 | One example of loosing salvation NT | Luke 8:13 | New Creature | 88342
tj57h@cs.com I have provided you with the following example of two individuals who as far as I can tell have at one time forfeited their salvation. It was said of these two that they made shipwreck of their faith. The picture I get of a shipwreck, is the ship is run upon the shallows and rocks by the wind and waves, and the waves pound athe ship into the rocks unmercifully until they bust the ship apart and it sinks or is cast adrift. The ship is destroyed. The same way the faith of these two was destroyed. Others will tell you they were not ever truly saved to begin with. I believe Paul would have told us that was the case if it was true. But I don't buy into that philosophy and thinking. Since Paul never said they were never really saved to begin with, that would have to be an assumption on the part of those who read these verses in that context. Paul wrote about some who "made ship-wreck of their faith" (1 Tim. 1:19,20) unlike many in our day Paul did not say of these who shipwrecked their faith, they were never really saved to begin with. 1 Tim. 1:18-20 This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare; Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck: Of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander; whom I have delivered unto Satan, that they may learn not to blaspheme. 175 | Where did your faith come from? | Luke 8:13 | New Creature | 88963
God authored and initiated my salvation. Being born-again was not something I being a spiritually dead person could do. A corpse cannot raise itself to life either physically or spiritually. So give God all the credit. I agree grace is unmerited, unearned, and undeserved. That still does not address the question of whether or not salvation can ever be forfeited. Like all free gifts, they can be refused, or thrown away. Thanks anyway I still remain unconvinced New Creature |

If "once saved, always saved is true, then why does God's wriitten word say in; John 15:6 If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. 177 | WHAT MADE LOT A RIGHTIOUS MAN? | Luke 8:13 | New Creature | 89301
sorry I have not been able to respond to you, since I have had such a difficult time trying to keep up with all the mail and questions I have received on this topic. You asked me "So now exactly what sin is it that is going to send a born again Son to eternal condemnation in hell?" This is a popular question those who cling to the teaching of "once saved, always saved" love to ask those of us who find Bibical support to believe that teaching is not Bibical as is taught by many today. It's not a matter of what (single sin) will send a born again son to hell. It is rather a repeated offense or offenses against a Holy God which the Bible calls willful sin (Heb. 10:26) It is actually a process of drifting away from the faith which happens gradually over a long period of time. Don't ask me how long, I can't answer that. It very well is an individual thing. Nevertheless from Scripture I believe that the teaching of "once saved, always saved" must be an invention of man. Consider from God's word Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him. (Heb. 10:38) For in the case of those who have once been enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly gift and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, and then have fallen away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame. (Heb. 6:4-6 NASB) If a man abide not me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. 178 | Please provide responses to these verses | Luke 8:13 | New Creature | 89346
Doug First of all in John Chapter 15 it is said that people not works are cast into the fire to be burned. No where does John 15 indicate that this is works judgment. John 15:1-6 is plainly about those who do not abide (remain) in Christ the vine. To read anything else into that text is to alter the clear and plain meaning of Scripture. I suggest you take a closer look. Next you stated; "I think it is unfortunate that you feel that within yourself you had to do something to gain eternal life. You must believe this, if you feel you can do something to lose it. But eternal life is not YOUR work. It is the Work of God, within you." My work in salvation was once God turned the light on in my soul and spirit to follow through with the Bibical commands to repent and believe. God does not do our repenting or believing for us. repent ye, and believe the gospel. Mark 1:15 except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. Luke 13:3 Repent ye therefore, and be converted Acts 3:19 God ... now commandeth all men every where to repent: Acts 17:30 So you see repenting is commanded of God. If you call doing what God asks us to do a work then you will have to discuss that with God since that is what His word says. That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. We must believe also. God draws us to Himself, and enables to respond, but He neither repents or believes for us. And yes I also am aware that it is God's goodness that leads us to repentance, however there is not a single verse in Scripture that implicitly states that God does our repenting for us. Those who repent have their sins remitted, because of their faith in the shed blood of our Savior. Not because of what we can or might do, but because of what Christ did on the cross on our behalf. We merely believe the Biblical commands to repent and believe. Next you said: " have some challenges for you: I would like you to give me your perspective on the following verses which strongly support eternal security. Jer 32:40 I will make an everlasting covenant with them: I will never stop doing good to them, and I will inspire them to fear me, so that they will never turn away from me." If you want to get into the Old Testament as well then you will have to reconcile that single verse with these other verses from the New testament 1 Sam.16:14 But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul Saul said ... God is departed from me , and answereth me no more, (1 Sam. 28:15) Then said Samuel, Why then, dost thou ask of me, seeing the Lord is departed from thee, and is become thine enemy. (1 Sam. 28:16) The LORD is with you, while ye be with him; and if ye seek him, he will be found of you; but if ye forsake him, he will forsake you 2 Chr. 15:2 because ye have forsaken the LORD, he hath also forsaken you 2 Chr. 24:20 Ezek. 18:24 But when the righteous turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and doeth according to all the abominations that the wicked man doeth, shall he live? All his righteousness that he hath done shall not be mentioned: in his trespass that he hath trespassed, and in his sin that he hath sinned, in them shall he die. if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off forever. (1 Chr. 28:9) I will even forsake you saith the Lord. (Jer. 23:33) And there are many others as well. Next you used John 6:35-40 this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all that he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. How then do you explain the fact that Judas who was numbered with the other 11 apostles was lost. In what sense is this verse true? Then you posted from Jude 24 says "He is able to keep us from falling" This only says that He is able to keep from falling those who continually believe and trust in Him by faith. Faith is a verb which denotes continuous action and believe. So does the Bible contradict itself. Not in my opinion it doesn't. Scripture must be interpreted with Scripture. Thats why "once saved, always saved" does not agree with the Bible. It just isn't Bibical in the way many denominations teach it these days. So will you believe clever theologians, or trust that God's word is the only true and accurate standard. In His service New Creature |

179 | What does it mean to "fall away"? | Luke 8:13 | New Creature | 197297
hello budderfligh Let me provide you with what I believe may be some helpful definitions of "blasphemy against the Holy Spirit" "These words (Mark 3:28-30) were never intended to torment anxious souls honestly desiring to know Christ, but they stand out as a blazing beacon warning of the danger of persisting in the rejection of the Spirit's testimony of Christ, until the seared conscience no longer responds to the gospel message." (Ironside) Blasphemy against the Holy Ghost (Matthew 12:31,32; Mark 3:28,29; Luke 12:10) is regarded by some as a continued and obstinate rejection of the gospel, and hence is an unpardonable sin, simply because as long as a sinner remains in unbelief he voluntarily excludes himself from pardon. (Easton's Bible Dictionary) The sin of blasphemy is a sin that can be forgiven. However, there is a sin of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit that cannot be forgiven (Matthew 12:32; Mark 3:29; Luke 12:10). This is a state of hardness in which one consciously and willfully resists God's saving power and grace. It is a desperate condition that is beyond the situation of forgiveness because one is not able to recognize and repent of sin. Thus one wanting to repent of blasphemy against the Spirit cannot have committed the sin. (Holman Bible Dictionary) |
