161 | Parable fo the Good Samaritan - Evaluate | NT general Archive 1 | Mommapbs | 25540
The interpretation of the Parable you have presented is out of sync with Scripture. Jesus used this illustration to teach us that loving our neighbor emanates from a heart that loves God first! On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus.” Teacher," he asked, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?” “What is written in the Law?" he replied. "How do you read it?" He answered: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind; and, Love your neighbor as yourself. You have answered correctly, Jesus replied. "Do this and you will live." But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" Luke 10:25-29 How do we love God? By obeying His commands I John 5:3 What are His commands? And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us. Those who obey his commands live in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us. I John 3:23-4 What pleases God? Our faith - “Without faith it is impossible to please God” Hebrews 11:6 “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved." Acts 4:12 Jesus declared, “I am the Way the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”.” John 14:6 No one can “achieve salvation!” “But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior.” (Titus 3:4-6) “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God -- not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Ephesians 2:8-10 The only thing that distinguishes a believer from a non-believer is the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit of Christ. God alone can see this! The work of the Holy Spirit is to conform us to the image of Christ, so that our attitudes and actions will reflect Him. Many believers hinder His work by not yielding their will to Him! The point is this, our first response to God is one of faith – do we believe what God says? All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. The penalty for sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. See Romans 3:23, 6:23 God will judge sin; do we recognize our need to be saved from His wrath? We have a choice to exercise faith in Christ’s finished work on the cross, He paid the penalty for our sins (death) or choose to believe in our selves to meet God's Holy demand for righteousness? God’s righteousness is either out of reach, therefore we need a Savior, or it is attainable, and we can achieve eternal salvation on our own. God’s Word is very clear; you can choose to believe it or ignore it. “Anyone who believes in the Son of God has this testimony in his heart. Anyone who does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, because he has not believed the testimony God has given about his Son. And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. I John 5:10-13 There are no denominational or religious monikers over the gates of Heaven. Salvation is a free gift and available to everyone – Muslims, Buddhists, Catholics, Baptists, Wiccans – but there is only ONE WAY, Jesus! |

162 | IS PRODUCING"GOLD DUST"@CHURCH A GENUINE | NT general Archive 1 | Mommapbs | 28443
HOW DOES ONE KNOW A GENUINE SIGN FROM GOD DONE BY A PERSON? There is no genuine sign from God done BY a person. Even regarding the work of our Lord Jesus Christ, it was His yielded submission to the power of God within Him that enabled Him . . . Acts 2:22 "Men of Israel, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know." Signs and wonders belonging to God are accomplished through an individual by the working of the Holy Spirit. Acts 14:3 "So Paul and Barnabas spent considerable time there, speaking boldly for the Lord, who confirmed the message of his grace by enabling them to do miraculous signs and wonders." We are reminded to "test the spirits." Not every spirit testifies of Jesus Christ. 1 John 4:1"Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world." We are also warned in 2 Thess. 2:9 -"The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with the work of Satan displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders," ASK GOD for discernment -He will answer you when you seek HIM with a sincere heart. John 4:48 "Unless you people see miraculous signs and wonders," Jesus told him, "you will never believe." John 20:29 "Then Jesus told him, "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed." I hope these Scriptures help! |

163 | thou hast left thy first love | NT general Archive 1 | Mommapbs | 34593
Greetings! Anything or anyone that we put before Jesus is an example of "leaving our first love"! He wants to have FIRST PLACE in our hearts. Jesus said, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind . . ." Luke 10:27 In an earlier post I offered a suggestion about this verse that I will copy at the bottom of this reply. But first, let me assure you that according to God, "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,"(!) 2 Tim 3:16 So we would do well to heed the warnings that Jesus issues in His messages to the churches. Remember also that Jesus instructed John to "Write on a scroll what you see and send it to the seven churches: to Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea." Rev 1:11 Although this message was shared historically, because it is the Word of God, it obviously transcends time as well. Within the body of Christ, there will be contemporary "churches" or groups of believers whose character is described by John in these first few chapters. But even as individual believers, Jesus' commendations, warnings and promises should be used for self examination, admonition, correction and encouragement! Lastly, looking at the context of 1 Tim 5:12, this verse does not appear to bear the same weight as Rev 2:4. This passage is adressing the care of widows. So these two verses are like apples and oranges in my mind. A widow is free to remarry if she so desires, a married woman (we are the Bride of Christ)who leaves her Husband for another "love" is guilty of adultery. Here is my orignal post, it has an interesting historical observation for you to mull over! In Revelation 2:4, could Mary, the mother of Jesus be the competition for our love the Lord is referring to? If you will recall, the Apostle John was charged with Mary's care by Jesus as He was dying. 'From that hour the disciple took her into his own household.' John 19:27 Most of us know that John wrote The Revelation of Jesus Christ while he was exiled on Patmos, but many probably don't know that he was exiled from his position as the "bishop" at Ephesus. If John had relocated from Jerusalem to Ephesus, it is safe to assume that Mary, being in his care, accompanyied him also. And,according to historians, the house that John provided for Mary is still standing in Ephesus. In fact, it has become a shrine. In Revelation 2:4 and 5, following His condemnation, 'But I have this against you, that you have left your first love.', Jesus counsels and warns us with these words,'Therefore remember from where you have fallen, and repent and do the deeds you did at first; or else I am coming to you and will remove your lampstand out of its place--unless you repent.' Putting this scripture together with historical references it is possible to conclude that perhaps Ephesus was the genesis point of where the love for Jesus was eclipsed by the adoration of His mother,Mary. The Ephesians did not heed the Lord's admonition to return to their first love, in fact, first church they built in Ephesus was not dedicated to the Lord, but to Mary instead! Obviously they did not repent, for true to the Lord's warning, today there is no church in Ephesus! It is a dead city - not a soul lives there! Blessings, Mommapbs |

164 | tribulation vs. wrath | NT general Archive 1 | Mommapbs | 35316
Greetings! You have made an interesting observation. Jesus said, "These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world." John 16:33 We are in the world and are indeed suffering tribulation. The reason? Tribulation is the result of the presence of sin. The earth is the domain of Satan; he is the "prince of this world." And tribulation or trouble is the reigning characteristic of this ruler! We must be careful not to associate the tribulation that Jesus assured us that we would encounter with the "Wrath of God!" They are VERY different. The Scriptures that you provided are sobering, for what we are experiencing under the reign of Satan is a "drop in the bucket" when compared to the Wrath of God that will be poured out upon the earth in the days to come! What a relief to know that He will save us from that day! "For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ" 1Thess. 5:9 Blessings, Mommapbs |

165 | What is the proper NT church model? | NT general Archive 1 | Mommapbs | 45649
Greetings Retxar! I agree that the "elder" organization is the most Bibilical but a more serious question is: WHO should appoint these elders today? Could we suggest that elders are divinely "called?" We see that in the early church elders were appointed according to the instructions Paul set forth. Yet, 1 Tim3:1 affirms the "desire" to assume this responsibility. Would we reason that those who are "called" of God to the position of elder or overseer also possess the desire for such a responsibility? I believe that apart from a latter day Apostle, prayer is the prerequisite for the organization and leadership of the Church. (1 Tim 2:1-9) Seek God’s will for those who HE has selected to be in authority. I have a few observations to share with you. Since God establishes all authority (Romans 13:1-2) What authority has God established for His Church? WHO is the head of the body? According to the following references, Jesus MUST be the AUTHORITATIVE head of the Church: 1. "He is the head over all rule and authority." Col 2:10 2. "For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body." Eph 5:23 3. "He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything." Col 1:18 Isn’t it interesting that Jesus uses the masculine descriptive – He is the Husband. What might we conclude then about the leaders in the Church – His BRIDE? Should they all be women? (Just stirring the pot here!) Back to the topic . . . It is wise to consider what Paul wrote to Timothy, who was commissioned to build up the Church in Ephesus. The leader is called an overseer (elder)and 1 Tim 3 lists their qualifications well. It is interesting to note that Paul says he “must be able to teach.” (v 2) Just wondering, if elders must be able to teach, how diligent are we in our churches to appoint those with this gift? (I think more often than not, elders are selected for their charisma, or perhaps their managerial or administrative skills!) In 1 Tim 5:17, Paul says that elders who do their work (preaching and teaching) well should be paid well! (A novel concept for some I’m sure.) As Christ’s representatives, Paul, in 1 Tim 1:5, exhorts us to be filled with “love that comes from a pure heart, a clear conscience and sincere faith.” All else (UNITY, and purpose: evangelism, service, instruction, ministry, etc) will flow from these! Paul goes on to say that “some teachers (elders?) have missed this whole point. They have turned away from these things (being filled with love that comes from a pure heart, a clear conscience and sincere faith) and spend their time arguing and talking foolishness.” Does this sound familiar!? With regard to the gender issue, I personally can not receive a woman as an overseer or an elder according to Paul’s criteria and organization of church leadership. Although there are references to elders in the New Testament churches, it is interesting to note that in the organization of leadership as outlined in 1 Tim 3, elder is singular while deacons are plural. Then again, the plurality of the leadership certainly supports the “giftedness” of the body of believers (1 Cor 12) to use their gifts in concert – we are not to entertain solo performances. (Yes, you can read into this here too!) What about accountability in the Church. Do we see this in action in Bilibical references? Did the early believers place themselves under any one person's authority in Jerusalem or Antioch? I believe that organizing their assembly upon the foundations of Jesus' teachings, they placed themselves under HIS authority. The activity of the Holy Spirit; His power and unifying presence was evident in the early church. I believe that even today we could entertain the notion of examining the activity of the Holy Spirit as a means of accountability in our churches! Jesus commanded us to “love one another;” for “the world will know that you belong to ME if you love one another” John 13:34-5. How have we, the Church, the Body of Christ loved one another since then - especially in our leadership? Refer back to 1 Tim 1:5-6! Frankly, I doubt that ANY organized Church leadership will measure up to what God desires for this reason: lack of love for the brethren which has resulted in loss of unity! Although we are so fractured as a body, we have the hope of our "resetting" with the eminent return of Jesus to restore and reunite our broken (dry) bones! Thanks again for this thought provoking question. Blessings, Mommapbs |

166 | What is the proper NT church government? | NT general Archive 1 | Mommapbs | 46445
"Now the overseer must be above reproach, the husband of but one wife, temperate, selfcontrolled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach," 1 Tim 3:2 BUT - above reproach does not mean infallible! As the body being led, we must keep this in mind as we hold them accountable! Also, as the "overseer" the Pastor recognizes each of his flock and their gifts; he is the steward of these as well. The following is a piece I wrote called "The Family Business" which you may find interesting: The Family Business If we don’t use our spiritual gifts, we are robbing the body of Christ – Beth Moore Once a upon a time there was a father who wanted to secure his children’s future so he decided to buy a business; this would enable him to provide an employment opportunity for his entire family. The father evaluated the strengths and weaknesses of each child and saw to their training and education. This would equip his children for the jobs he had prepared for them to do. Finally, the day arrived when the father had all his children in place at the business he had bought. He was proud of his children and their accomplishments. The father knew that their skills would be essential for the future of the company and he looked forward to working with them on a daily basis. However, as the father surveyed the company's year-end earning report he was disappointed. There was little growth and no profit. Upon investigation, the father discovered that his employees were unable to accept the leadership that he had provided. They refused the gifts, talents, expertise and training the father had so carefully invested in his children. The employees were ignorant – unable to understand that the success of the company would ultimately benefit everyone! The father’s dream of a family business faded. And one by one, his children left to seek a place of service where their gifts were welcomed and appreciated. Recognize the spiritual gifts that God provides in others. And . . . Use them or lose them! |

168 | why would the night | NT general Archive 1 | Mommapbs | 54410
Greetings dltlshines! Romans 1:20 answers the first question. God has made Himself known to us through His creation - just gazing at the night sky is a humbling experience. We are so small and insignificant, yet the God of the Universe placed the sky with all its starry hosts arrayed there and us beneath its canopy to come to know HIM! If we can describe it as no less than majestic, what should we conclude about the CREATOR?! Secondly, Jesus affirmed children when He declared, "Truly I say to you, unless you are converted and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven." Mt 18:3 What better voice to deliver praise than one who is able to completely trust God!Children naturally trust; they learn to doubt. See Mt 21:15-16 for an illustration of this contrast. Hope this helps! Blessings, Mommapbs |

169 | Is Christ a mystery? | NT general Archive 1 | Mommapbs | 65234
Greetings FTimA! The mystery of Christ has been revealed - Jesus is God's Perfect provision for the salvation of the whole world. Can you explain HOW this is possible? It's a mystery to me! In your profile you wrote,"How could this have come about by mere chance?". The "mystery of Christ" relies upon the same answer. (GOD alone) We know through God's Word that He saves man based upon faith alone (Eph. 2:8-10 et al)But can we explain HOW God saves? HOW means, what is the process that takes place in us that we degenerates become righteous, acceptable to God? When we do not understand HOW something "works," we often call it a mystery. The same can be applied to HOW God declares us righteous by the shed blood of Christ . . . can you explain HOW Christ's ressurection insures the same for us as believers? It's a mystery to me, yet knowing the One who keeps secrets (Dt 29:29)enables my heart to have confidence that He is faithful to do as He promises. Blessings on your day. Mommapbs |

173 | "Your bread"?Or "loaves of Bread"? | NT general Archive 1 | Mommapbs | 119012
Greetings Ray - re: your question, "whether this Man is capable of changing the stones into bread?" Does this not challenge the Divinity of Jesus and hence the sovereignty of God - which is, what I think, exactly what Satan was attempting? (pun intended) And the tempter came and said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread." Mt 4:3 Your question reminds me of the father's request in Mark 9:22 " . . . But if You can do anything, take pity on us and help us!" I can just hear Jesus incredulous response, "If I can" ?!!! (v 23) Might He say also to your question: "If I CAN turn these stones into bread?" And the devil said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, tell this stone to become (Your) bread." Luke 4:3 On another note, Greek or not, is the issue of possession in question in this passage? For God, as Creator, owns everything; He is sovereign over all and is not subject to the demand of ANY created being. (I think we forget this at times!) Thanks for giving me the opportunity to dig deeper into this passage! Blessings, mommapbs Psalm 34:8 |

175 | Joseph a "type of Christ | Genesis | Mommapbs | 48214
This list is taken from "Dispensational Truth" (1918), by Clarence Larkin. He notes these events in Joseph's life as a "type of Christ:" 1. Taken to Egypt 2. Tempted and overcame 3. Savior of the world 4. Rejected by his brethren 5. Sold for 20 pieces of silver 6. Interceded for his brethren 7. Got his bride (gentile) before the famine (tribulation) 8. Reveals himself to his brethren and is accepted (I found it interesting that I had to correct Larkin's spelling of "brethern" to brethren! They didn't have "spell check" in 1918 and this list was actually handwritten.) |

177 | how did Jacob reap what he had sown | Genesis | Mommapbs | 84822
Greetings ford! What did Jacob reap from his sons? How does the way a father loves set a pattern for the family? As I see it, these boys lived in a household of divided loyalties. Jealousy reigned. First and foremost it began with Jacob's unequal love for his wives - Rachel was loved more than Leah. (Gen 29:30-31) Secondly, Jacob loved Joseph more than any of his brothers. (Gen 37:3) It also appears that Benjamin, the only other son of his beloved Rachel was deeply loved as well. (Gen 42:38) It is also interesting to note how this preferential love as demonstrated by Jacob influenced Joseph - see Gen 37:2 - Joseph was the proverbial "tattle tale." Certainly he did not endear himself to his brothers in such a role. And yet, he was not corrected or chastized until his self rightoeuness became more apparant (Gen 37:10) Sadly, Jacob's preferential love for Jospeh over his brothers was expressed in a tangible manner which strengthened the jealousy and hatred btween them. (Gen 37:4) This is in stark contrast to the activity of God, His love is unconditional! (Romans 2:11 et al) Note also how Joseph flaunts his "superiority" or status by telling about his dreams. (Self exaltation)Gen 38:5-11 His brothers responded with more hatred and jealousy. Hatred, deceit, dishonesty, self righteousness, jealousy, arrogance and pride all reared their ugly heads as Jacob's sin of paritality was sown in the lives of his family. And yet don't we as well reap what we sow when we fail to love as Christ loved the Church and gave Himself up for her?! How thankful I am for the pure and unconditioanl love of Jesus! These are just some thoughts on your question. I hope this helps! mommapbs |

178 | Why would we de-value story-telling? | Genesis | Mommapbs | 84895
Greetings JRM! Since God frequently uses object lessons to teach me His truth, I don't disregard the use of "story" as an effective tool. I do struggle with your choice of the word "myth" though. You asked, "Can a story convey truth more clearly than historical details?" I think it depends upon the Storyteller! Permit me to tell you a story: This isn't history, per se, but it is "HIS Story!" An excerpt from "The Last Act in Scene III." Because God is eternal, we cannot adequately grasp what has always been and will be. But suffice it to say that before the beginning, God. The Trinity was in perfect communion. The Bible is silent about the point in the continuum of eternity past that God created the angelic order, yet I believe that these beings preceded mankind and the physical universe. Indeed, the Creation is just part of a much larger story, one that has been written to put an end to evil for all eternity! Very simplistically, eternity past is Act I; the creation of the angelic order is Act II; the creation of man takes place in Act III; Act IV is the Earthly reign of Christ and Act V is eternity yet to be. Right now, we are moving very close to the "Last Scene in Act III- the Judgment of God!" John Eldredge, a counselor and author, presents the message of the gospel of the kingdom as a great adventure. This, the "greatest (love) story of all, is told by the Master Storyteller. And in every story, there is a beginning and an ending; there is also a cast of characters: a hero, a villain, and of course the damsel in distress. God, the Author, was already there at the beginning; creation was not. God is the good King. Yet what was created questioned His goodness and therefore His rule. Satan is the villain; he is the being who brought sin into God's perfect Universe by his rebellion. Evil cannot co-exist with God, so a plan for the restoration of God's Kingdom continues to unfold with the Creation and the anticipated Fall of man. Jesus is the hero, who leaves His home in Heaven to enter our world, on a Divine mission: to rescue the beautiful maiden. Mankind is that damsel in distress! And whether we recognize it or not, we are the ones who need to be saved. We do not need to be saved from the villain, for he has already been defeated, but rather, we need to be saved from the wrath of God against sin. “All have sinned . . . the penalty for sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”Romans 3:23, Romans 6:23 Today we are living our individual "little stories" within the pages of what John Eldredge calls "The Sacred Romance." This "romance" is the ongoing pursuit and wooing of the damsel's heart by the Hero. “The love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.For while we were still helpless,at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:5,6,8 Act III, the one in which humanity is cast, is drawing to a conclusion. The Old Testament prophets as well as Jesus gave us "cues" (clues and signs!) to keep us following the story line of this great adventure He has written. The Last Act - the Judgment of God - will come and the story of those who have chosen to be written out of the script will end. But just as God was there in eternity before the beginning of time, God will usher in eternity for the future . . . God declares that He will make all things new, not all new things! (Rev. 21:5) In this great restoration, there will be a new stage and a perfect script for His Beloved; indeed they will “live happily ever after!” “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him, should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16 I know that there are those who will reject my interpretation of theology, but this presentation made sense to me! It enables me to understand how mankind "fits" into the BIG picture that God has prepared for those who love Him! "THINGS WHICH EYE HAS NOT SEEN AND EAR HAS NOT HEARD, AND WHICH HAVE NOT ENTERED THE HEART OF MAN, ALL THAT GOD HAS PREPARED FOR THOSE WHO LOVE HIM." 1 Cor 2:9 mommapbs |

180 | Did God created people before Adam | Gen 1:1 | Mommapbs | 48050
Greetings marg! You wrote, "I don't think we all are descendants of Adam." According to God's Word: "All flesh that moved on the earth perished, birds and cattle and beasts and every swarming thing that swarms upon the earth, and all mankind;of all that was on the dry land, all in whose nostrils was the breath of the spirit of life, died. Thus He blotted out every living thing that was upon the face of the land, from man to animals to creeping things and to birds of the sky, and they were blotted out from the earth; and only Noah was left, together with those that were with him in the ark. Gen 7:21-23 Noah was responsible for re-populating the earth. The genealogy of Noah is recorded in Genesis 5. He is a descendent of Adam. We are all descendents of Noah; therefore we are all descendents of Adam as well. Hope this clears up any confusion about your ancestors! Mommapbs |
