163 | Isn't Paradise the Heaven? | John 20:17 | EdB | 241475
In Jewish theology Hades/Hell was the holding place for the dead. Jesus using this teaching talked about it in Luke 16:19-31 in the parable of the rich man and Lazarus. One side of Hades/hell was hot dry place and holding place of the unrighteous dead. The other side was Abraham's bosom or PARADISE where the righteous dead was held until the Messiah came. When Jesus died on the cross He descended into Hades/Hell to the paradise side and preached the Good news to the righteous dead. He then as Eph 4:8 tells us lead those held captive by death to heaven. The paradise side of Hades/Hell is no longer inhabited. Those that now die and are in Christ go directly into His presence. 2 Cor 5:8 Unfortunately the hot dry side of hades/Hell is still occupied by those awaiting final judgment at the Great White Throne Judgment. |

166 | Sex before marriage ? | Bible general | EdB | 241395
First to answer your question requires speculation and as you probably know speculation on this forum is frowned on. That said and risking the wrath of many I will offer my speculation. Matthew 22:1-14 speaks of this. The man in verse 11 thought he was saved but hadn't changed. I think the church in America today is filled with people that believe they are saved but haven't changed. J Vernon McGee once said over 65 percent of the people sitting in church are not saved. I questioned this and surveyed brother pastors. The results I now believe that the actual number is only about 10 percent of those that attend church are actually saved. Many think they can fool God. Fornication is sin any way you cut it. |

167 | Vessels to honor or dishonor | 2 Tim 2:20 | EdB | 241390
If you read the verse it is saying there are gold and silver and also wood and earthenware vessels. Some honor and some dishonor. Read the Amplified. Remember a vessel can not cleanse itself, only it's master can do that. If our Master is Christ then we will be cleansed. |

168 | Theos - Adonai | Bible general | EdB | 241386
I'm sorry my answer yesterday was totally off, I really don't know where it came from. My Apology!!!! YHWH (Yodh He Waw He)made up of Hebrew letters and is the term used for God approx 6800 times in original manuscripts. The error in my original answer was on the origin of the word Adonai which means LORD in Hebrew not Latin or Greek. However both the Greeks and Roman had gods named similarily. Adonis and Adonia. Tyndale it is believed took the word YHWH which modern Jews do not speak and combined it with vowels of the word Adonai (Lord). The word Adonai was commonly used when speaking of God. The problem with contributing Jehovah to Tyndale is some Masoretic text did vowel point the YHWH to make it appear as Ye ho vah but it was still pronounced Adonai (Lord or Master). In any case the word Jehovah as we pronounce it first showed up in English in the Tyndales Bible and as such Tyndale is said to have made the word. Again sorry if I made you lose any sleep. :-) |

169 | Jehovah's name | Bible general | EdB | 241380
The name Jehovah is made up. Most scholars contribute it to Tyndale. It is believed he took the tetragram YHWH and added the vowels from the Greek word for God "Adonai". The Latin influence of pronunciation of Y becomes J and W to V |

171 | Will those who don't like Christ's churc | Matt 22:14 | EdB | 241372
I think the answer to your question is the verses right before this. The man was invited to the wedding but he never changed his clothing and when the king came in he had the man thrown inner to the outer darkness. Today there are many many that think they are saved but they have never changed, they live as they did before their "salvation". In some cases their change if there is a change is nothing more than a Sunday morning facade. In their hearts they harbor anger, hatred, greed, pride and lusts. Today it seems the biggest delight many people have is putting others down. This shameful behavior is happening everywhere,in the Government, in the News, in reality shows, in schools, in business in the church and even in forums such as this. Most mistake this as intellect when in fact it is pride. We all must fight the big three. Lust of the eye, lust of the flesh and pride of life. If these are prevalent in our lives we are not the chosen few. |

172 | Timothy died at age 80 in 97 AD? | 2 Tim 2:22 | EdB | 241353
The easiest answer would be for me to say "tradition." In this case tradition may have come from Eusebius: The History of the Church. However I really like the scholarship of Foxes Book of Martyrs and in that book in the Second chapter near the end of the subtopic Second Persecution, it tells of the Timothy's martyrdom. And that is where I gleaned it. |

173 | Why is anatomy often in Proverbs? | Prov 16:1 | EdB | 241352
Tongue in this case is talking of what we say. In all most all cases when parts of the anatomy is mentioned in Proverbs it is talking of the literal part. The mouth what we eat, eye what we see etc. When it comes to the lips and tongue scripture often uses the word lips to suggest deceit or speaking false flattery. The tongue is most often used to speak of what we say, both righteously and unrighteous, soothing or hurtful, wisdom or ignorance, loving or hateful. |

174 | What is "that which is within"? | Luke 11:41 | EdB | 241350
You cited Luke 11:41 did you read the Amplified that was also cited I think that will answer your question. Luke 11:41 (amp) But [dedicate your inner self and] give as donations to the poor of those things which are within [of inward righteousness] and behold, everything is purified and clean for you. |

175 | Timothy's age | 2 Tim 2:22 | EdB | 241349
I know we do not like to speculate here but the most reliable sources tell us Timothy died at Ephesus in 97 AD when he was 80 years old. Timothy was martyred when he tried to stop a pagan ceremony. After he preached the gospel he was beaten, dragged through the city and stoned to death. First Timothy is thought to have been written in the Macedonian stages of Paul's ministry and is commonly dated to be in or around 60-65 AD. If we subtract 63 for 97 we get 34 years. If we then subtract 34 years from Timothy's 80 years we get 46 years. That would make Timothy 46 when Paul wrote First Timothy to him. Second Timothy was written about 4-7 years later so Timothy would be 50 to 53 years of age. Again all dates are approximate but I think there is enough evidence to say Timothy was a mature adult when Paul wrote to him and probably within 17-22 years of Paul's age. Most scholars believe Paul wrote as he did to show he considered Timothy a spiritual son and himself Timothy's spiritual father. Hope this helps. |

176 | first prophet peter quote | Acts | EdB | 241336
I would guess this is homework and YOU are to find the answer yourself. If you read Acts chapter 2 somewhere around verse 14 you will see Peter's first sermon and the mention of the prophet Peter quotes. Study Hard and show yourself approved |

177 | Old Testament go when die? | Luke 16:19 | EdB | 241318
Jewish teaching tells of the Jewish belief that Hades/hell was the holding place of the dead. There were two sides a hot dry side and another called paradise or Abraham's bosom. In Luke 16:19-31 Jesus' teaching using that same picture reinforces scholars confidence that, that was how Jews viewed the place of the dead. Jesus again reinforced that when he told the thief on the cross that today, the thief would be with him in paradise/Abraham's Bosom. We know Jesus descended into Hades/Hell and lead those held captive by death to Heaven Eph 4:8 |

178 | Should we give to a beggar? | Mark 10:21 | EdB | 241309
We the church are to give to the poor. However there are many that are lazy. This is where we must have discernment. John the Baptist said if we have a brother in need of a coat and we have two we are to give him one. As I said the church is to care for the poor but unfortunately the church has in many cases abdicated that to the government. |

179 | Did Jesus mention we are not to beg? | Matt 26:11 | EdB | 241307
As far as I know Jesus never said not to beg. David said said he never saw a righteous man beg Ps 37:25. However scripture does say the lazy will beg. Prov 20:4 |

180 | Naming Created Things | Gen 2:19 | EdB | 241305
This is almost impossible to answer since scripture doesn't address God's reasoning here. That said I think it was God's way of simplifying the process. He allowed man to man things using names that made sense to man. The alternative would have been to name everything and then teach man the names. On the dominion issue I think that gets misunderstood misused by many. God was, is and always will be in control. Man's dominion is nothing more than man's ability to overpower most of nature. Every animal fears man. Man has diverted rivers, dried up swamps and made swamps. We have moved earth from one place and taken it to another. We are like ants busy at the task at hand. However we have never changed the nature of animals, ants or any part of creation. We may have eliminated them, moved them, domesticated them but the nature that God placed in them remains. |
