Bible Question: What is meant by the use of the word "tongue" in this passage? What is the meaning behind the use of names of human anatomy (bones, lips, mouth, etc.) found throughout the book of Proverbs? |
Bible Answer: Tongue in this case is talking of what we say. In all most all cases when parts of the anatomy is mentioned in Proverbs it is talking of the literal part. The mouth what we eat, eye what we see etc. When it comes to the lips and tongue scripture often uses the word lips to suggest deceit or speaking false flattery. The tongue is most often used to speak of what we say, both righteously and unrighteous, soothing or hurtful, wisdom or ignorance, loving or hateful. |
