God's day to you, hic and welcome to the SBF, May I interject? It would help me, and others if you put something in your profile. Now because we have different interpetation of Scripture - there are different demoninations. For example, the role of women in ministry and the type of rule (pastor, elder or congregational). We should accept the minor differences. Searcher |

144 | The meaning of number | Bible general Archive 3 | Searcher56 | 171148
- God's day to you, minowens, and welcome to the SBF, I basically agree with the site that Doc provided ... I provided several verses with the number forty. I don't see it being consistent, so don't try. Gen 7:12 The rain fell upon the earth for forty days and forty nights Gen 18:29 Forty was used by Abraham in his countdown Gen 25:20 Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah Gen 26:34 When Esau was forty years old he married Judith Gen 50:3 Now forty days were required for it, for such is the period required for embalming. Exo 24:18 Moses was on the mountain forty days and forty nights. Exo 26:19 "You shall make forty sockets of silver under the twenty boards Num 14:34 'According to the number of days which you spied out the land, forty days, for every day you shall bear your guilt a year, even forty years, and you will know My opposition. Deut 25:3 "He may beat him forty times but no more, Jdg 3:11 Then the land had rest forty years Jdg 13:1 Now the sons of Israel again did evil in the sight of the LORD, so that the LORD gave them into the hands of the Philistines forty years. God's day to you, prayon, Doc is right - cite your source. Well let us see about you number theory. It is dangerous to say a number means something. All I need to do is to point out it is not consistent, once. 1-unity ... While uni means one ... tough to have unity with one ... need two. While we need to have the same mind, one doesn't always mean unity “Lamech took to himself two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other”, Zillah. (Gen 4:19) . 2 is Fellowship; union with Christ; ... "union" in 2 seems to contradict 1 - unity. Also, same verse above ... with two wives I doubt there was fellowship. Then there are the two theives (Luk 23:32,39-43) and witnesses (Rev 11:6). 3 is the Trinty ... While tri means three, tow or three witenesses were needed in a death sentence judgment (Deu 17:6). Also ..."And if one can overpower him who is alone, two can resist * him. A cord of three strands is not quickly torn apart" (Ecc 4:12). 4 is the earth(4 winds, 4 corners of the earth) ... There were also 4 rivers out of Eden (Ge 2:10), 4 rings/ corners (tabernacle) (Exo 25:26). 5 is grace … There were 5 wise and 5 foolish virgins (Mat 25:2). 6 is man; human weakness … It is the number of days we should work, as the Lord completed His work (Exo 16:26, Ex 20:11) … Also, “Six branches shall go out from its sides” (Ex 25:32). 7 is perfection or completion … Actually God completed creation in 6 days, as already cited. God told Noah it was going to rain in 7 days (Gen 7:4) … and the number of days Noah waited between birds (Gen 8:10, 12) 8 is new beginning … “And every male among you who is eight days old shall be circumcised” (Gen 17:12) and “There shall be eight boards with their sockets of silver” (Exo 26:25). 9 is Spirit … While there are 9 parts of the fruit of the Spirit (Gal 5:22-23), “nine cities” is seen trice (Jos 15:44, 54, 21:16) and the number of lepers who didn’t return (Luk 11:11-19). Plus, there are gifts of the Spirit (1 Cor 12) .. is that number 9? . 10 is Responsibility on earth … Is the final number Abraham asked the Lord (Gen 18:32) and the number of camels his servant took to find a wife for his son (Gen 24:10). The tenth day was the day they selected the lamb (Exo 12:3) 11 is Human failure; confusion; judgement .. It is the number Joseph saw in his dreams (Gen 37:9), number of curtains (Exo 26:7) … plus the number of disciples after the resurrection (Lu 24:9). On the last I doubt any of list fits. 12 is number of earthly government (12 apostles; 12 tribes) … The woman had an issue of blood twelve years (Mat 9:20) … twelve wells of water (Exo 15:27). 40 is testing; probation … Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah,( Gen 25:20) and Esau was forty years old he married Judith (Gen 26:34) … forty sockets of silver (Exo 26:19). 50 is year of jubilee … Abraham started with fifty in asking the Lord to spare Sodom (Gen 18:24) and the width in cubit of the ark (Gen 6:15). Notice that I cited the first books of the OT or NT ... I think there is more. Searcher |

God's day to you, Jagfire and welcome to the forum Did God complete His creation in six days or seven? There is no meaning behind every number in the Bible, except for 666 ... "Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for the number is that of a man; and his number is six hundred and sixty-six" (Rev 13:18). Searcher |

Scripture ... Isaiah 1:18 "Come now, and let us reason together," Says the LORD, "Though your sins are as scarlet,They will be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They will be like wool." ... 158 | Can anyone recommend a good study book? | Bible general Archive 3 | Searcher56 | 172695
God's day to you, idsimmons, and welcome to the SBF, When doing a Bible study, there are two basic methods - topical (like family) and expository (which is a studying a book in the Bible). The group needs to determine which ... think expository is easier. I like it when a preacher uses this style, so I can prepare before he preaches. The next step is choose the study guide you are going to use. There are many, depending on what you are going to study and the level of difficulty (how much studying each is going to do). I have enjoyed Irving Jensen's and Chuck Swindoll's study guides. Go to your Christian book store to see what they have or online, one source is http://www.christianbook.com/ - Select Books on the left side - Then select Bible Study Guides ... you'll see many choices. This can give you ideas for the group to choose. Don't limit your study to what the guide has. Check out what the author says against what the Bible says by digging deeper. Remember it is just their view on what is said and should be a start. Searcher |
