142 | What is the concept of time in Is 38:8 | 2 Kin 20:11 | humbledbyhisgrace | 190935
Greetings richman766 ! Welcome to the Study Bible Forum! This is spoken of again in 2 Kings 20:8-11. Neither passage speaks to time changing. Only the shadow on the stairway! To go any further then that is beyond what scripture teaches on the matter. 2 Kings 20:8-11 (NASB) 20:8 Now Hezekiah said to Isaiah, "What will be the sign that the LORD will heal me, and that I shall go up to the house of the LORD the third day?" 20:9 Isaiah said, "This shall be the sign to you from the LORD, that the LORD will do the thing that He has spoken: shall the shadow go forward ten steps or go back ten steps?" 20:10 So Hezekiah answered, "It is easy for the shadow to decline ten steps; no, but let the shadow turn backward ten steps." 20:11 Isaiah the prophet cried to the LORD, and He brought the shadow on the stairway back ten steps by which it had gone down on the stairway of Ahaz. 143 | What do you think, Steve? | Prov 4:10 | humbledbyhisgrace | 190921
What do I think? By the grace of God, I agree with scripture! God is absolutely sovereign and mankind is absolutely corrupted by sin and in desperate need of the sovereign God to intercede in our life to overcome the corruption of sin that we (mankind) cannot overcome! The scriptures are full of both of these teachings. But a sample to consider... The book of Job, 1 Chronicles 29:11, Daniel 4:35, Psalms 22:28, Psalms 115:3, Isaiah 14:27, Romans 11:36, 1 Timothy 6:13-15, John 3:27, Ephesians 1:3-6, Romans 8:5-8, 1 Corinthians 2:14, 1 Corinthians 10:13, Galatians 5:17, John 3:3-6, Romans 7:14-25, Ephesians 2:3, etc, etc, etc... Did you take note of Doc's post 190917 ? More excellent scriptures to ponder on this matter! So, what do you think Val? Steve |

149 | satan's big lie. | Jer 29:11 | humbledbyhisgrace | 190588
Hi sqkeener, Scripture refers to satan as the father of lies (John 8:44). Actually, the scriptures teach us much about satan. It also teaches us in James 1:14 we are tempted by our own lust. James 1:14-15 (NASB) 1:14 But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. 1:15 Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death. It is not satan that always deceives us but our own sinful nature leads us into sin as well if we give into it. Your question is a broad one, but a very good one to consider for all. I say this because we (Christians) need to understand who God is, what does He teach us about Himself in scripture? What does He teach us about satan, evil, and our own nature? If we are to know the difference between what is of God and what is evil then we must know and understand what scripture teaches us. It is important for us to study His word and spend time with Him. The more we understand of Him the better equipped we are to discern what is of God and what is of evil. A good example we can look to on this subject is when Jesus told Peter “Get behind Me, satan” (Matthew 16:23). Now as we read the passage of scripture (Matthew 16:21-23), one might first think that what Peter was doing was the right thing. Obviously, Peter thought it was. But we see from Jesus rebuke of Peter an excellent example of why your question is so important for us to consider. It is obvious from the Lord’s words to Peter, that Peter was influenced by evil. It may seem hard to grasp but the Lord’s words are clear as He says "… Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are not setting your mind on God’s interests, but man's." (Matthew 16:23 NASB). This is a good example as it shows us the contrast of what we may perceive to be good and what are actually the things of God. Using this passage of scripture we can see that Peter did not fully understand what the Lord had just told them in verse 21. Had he have known and understood perhaps he would not have been tempted to and/or acted on the temptation to do that which contradicted the will of God. It appeared to Peter the right thing to do would be to prevent the Lord from going and suffering these things. This seems logical and it is easy to understand why Peter would have acted this way. But it was God’s will that Jesus suffer all these things and be put to death and be raised again from the dead. The Lord Jesus recognized the evil as it was clearly in contradiction to the will of God. This is also a good example (in my opinion) of how mankind's ways can and do fall short when compared to God's ways. How do we know the difference? By knowing what the will of God is! We study His word, seek Him out daily through His word, prayer, fellowship with our brothers and sisters in Christ, and get to know Him and what He has revealed to us through His word and through His creation. It is not always easy as you can see from the example of Peter given above. But we must strive to study His word and seek His will. Even if it may seem right to us, if it contradicts the will of God, it is sinful and must be rejected! Hope this is in some way helpful as I think your question is a good one and is important to not only understand but to apply as well. God bless, Steve |

150 | Preach Love of Christ or Obiedience | Ps 103:19 | humbledbyhisgrace | 190543
Greetings Crossroads1! Welcome to the Study Bible Forum! You know there are so many subjects that could be preached on but the fist thing that came to my mind was the sovereignty of God. Don't think you could cover it all in one sermon but you could get the point across! Maybe you could spend some time pointing out to the church who it is that calls us into service and who it is that gives the gifts to us and what the purpose of the gifts are. Perhaps your pastor and the "sideliner" both need to be reminded of this! You really leave a lot open for speculation with so little detail. I don't say that seeking more information only to say this situation to me doesn't sound like it can be resolved in a forum like this. Sounds like to me the church needs to ensure God is at the center of everything it is doing. If not look for more trouble down the road! Seek Him out brother, lift Him up before the congregation and stand firm against any evil that attempts to divide His people!!! There's another good subject, "Recognizing evil". How many Christians have trouble doing that? God bless, Steve |

152 | What happened when Jesus assended? | Acts 1:9 | humbledbyhisgrace | 190182
Greetings johnboy36, Welcome to the Study Bible Forum! It would have appeared to you just like it did to the eye witnesses that were there! See verse 9 below to see what scripture says they saw. Acts 1:9-11 (NASB) 1:9 And after He had said these things, He was lifted up while they were looking on, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. 1:10 And as they were gazing intently into the sky while He was going, behold, two men in white clothing stood beside them. 1:11 They also said, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into the sky? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in just the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven." Hebrews 9:24 (NASB) For Christ did not enter a holy place made with hands, a mere copy of the true one, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us How old are you? Steve |

153 | Searching for the truth | John | humbledbyhisgrace | 190121
Greetings Fytrobert! John 14:14-15 (NASB) 14:14 "If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it. 14:15 "If you love Me, you will keep My commandments. 1 John 5:14 (NASB) This is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 1 John 3:21-22 (NASB) 3:21 Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence before God; 3:22 and whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do the things that are pleasing in His sight. It appears you are focusing on what name one calls the Lord (Correct me if I'm wrong on that). Surely this is not what is meant by "ask Me anything in My name". Considering the scriptures above and the fact in Genesis 11:1-9 it is God Himself that confused the language of mankind. He set our boundaries and times to live on all the face of the earth (Acts 17:26). By the grace of God and to His glory, there are many languages spoken by mankind. The spelling and pronunciation of names may be different across some languages but this is by His design! Personally, I hold fast to proclaiming the name of Jesus when I pray. Not that saying the name is a requirement for the prayer. But rather as a cry to God and to the world and to myself that I believe and confess Jesus as my Lord and Saviour. I have heard some teach that we should use certain names and that it is dishonoring to God when we use the translated names ect... Again, my opinion, but what scripture teaches is that if we love Him, we keep His commandments, if we ask according to His will, if we do what is pleasing in His site (see scriptures above), if we abide in Him and do His will (John 15:1-16)! Hope this helps! In Jesus name and to His glory! Steve |

156 | Luke 7:36-50 - Clarification needed | Luke 7:44 | humbledbyhisgrace | 189934
Greetings Azure, If there were any question about it I would think verses 36 and 44 should clear it up. Luke 7:36 (NASB) Now one of the Pharisees was requesting Him to dine with him, and He entered the Pharisee's house and reclined at the table. Luke 7:44 (NASB) Turning toward the woman, He said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? I ENTERED YOUR HOUSE; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she has wet My feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. (My emphases added) Steve |

157 | why Acts chap. 4 and 5 is not practise | Eph 4:1 | humbledbyhisgrace | 189826
Greetings Bill, It is a good question! The passage of scripture you reference is a beautiful picture isn't it? How awesome it would be to see the brethren united in the Spirit like this today! I think the bottom line is sin! It appears to me we tend to be more interested in numbers then we are true believers. Everything in the church seems to be clocked and dated and the practice of uniting in the Spirit to worship God and disciple the brethren has taken a back set to playing church. Also, there seems to be a great lack of knowledge of God's word in the church and in too many cases an acceptance of false teaching. You are probably familiar with Ephesians 4:1-16. Share this with your brothers and sisters in Christ and encourage them to read it and seek to do their part. A good question for all of us is, are we doing our part or do we just sit back and complain about what others are not doing? That question is not pointed at you by the way. From what I have seen, it becomes easy for us to complain about others and we come up short ourselves. God is amazing and the way He works through those who are faithful and about His work is undeniable. Big question for all of us, are people seeing God in us? Are we setting the right example?!?!?!?! 160 | John 13:1 | John 13:15 | humbledbyhisgrace | 189343
Azure, My understanding is "the end" is referring to His time here on earth with them. Consider the first part of the verse "...Jesus knowing that His hour had come that He would depart out of this world to the Father..." I would think the washing of the disciples feet was aditional proof of the statement as it shows even though His hour had come, He humbled Himself once more taking the opportunity to teach them the ways of God!
