212 | When does temptation become sin? | Matt 5:28 | humbledbyhisgrace | 185270
Greetings Aminat! It is a good question you ask and one I consider important for us all to understand. Many will teach you that it is the act that establishes it as a sin. There was a recent discussion on the forum about this. The example was used when David saw Uriah's wife Bathsheba showering (2 Samuel 11) it was called the temptation and the fact that he slept with her it was called the sin. This is how many understand it apparently. At least I have heard it explained in such a manner many times. However, using the same example of David mentioned here, consider what Jesus said in Matthew 5:28 Matthew 5:28 (NASB) "but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart." So we can safely say that sin is actually committed before the actual physical manifestation of the act. I do think it is important to note, the act itself would also be sin. But in the example used here, the violation of God's law can be accomplished even without the physical manifestation. As I understand it, the temptation is not sin, but sin is accomplished in the heart regardless if someone follows through with the lust in which they were drawn into the temptation in the first place or not. I personally am not sure how to explain at what point the temptation becomes sin. I think I understand it but I'm hesitant to teach it as fact/truth in fear of misleading someone. I would say this though, although the temptation may not be sin, it clearly reveals the sinful nature within. One last thought on this. I tend to believe for a child of God, conviction is a good indicator of when we are either about to fall into sin or have fallen into sin. By Faith, Steve |

213 | Do homosexual tendencys constitute sin? | Lev 20:13 | humbledbyhisgrace | 185091
Greetings Hobbs! James 1:14-15 (NASB) 1:14 But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. 1:15 Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death. The temptation is not sin but it does reveal the sinful nature in my opinion. The lust spoken of in James 1:14 begins within the person. There is ownership here that points to the source of the temptation being the person. Our own lust entices us. We tempt ourselves with our own evil desires. So when our own lust has conceived it is then we move from the temptation to sin. The big question is at what point does this take place? I'm not so sure I know how to answer that one correctly but I'm going to put my thoughts on it out there. It's one of those areas I'm not so sure I can put my finger on so to speak but would be interested in hearing your thoughts or others thoughts on the question. So, considering this passage of scripture and the question "Do homosexual tendencies constitute sin?" I would think that if one can be tempted by homosexual tendency then his sinful nature harbors lust for such a thing. As I understand it, I would also think that the lust is conceived and gives birth to the sin long before the homosexual act occurs. Your thoughts? God bless, Steve |

215 | reason for long quote in Jas 2:18? | Bible general Archive 3 | humbledbyhisgrace | 184199
Greetings number7! Here is one thought on this from the Bible Knowledge Commentary "2:18. This may be one of the most misunderstood sections of the entire epistle. But someone will say, You have faith; I have deeds. An imaginary respondent, “someone,” was introduced. He did not object to James’ conclusion. He agreed that faith without works is dead. But he wrongly disparaged faith while stressing works (see comments on v. 19). What follows, Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do, may be the continuation of the respondent’s words. If so, they should be included within quotation marks. (If this were James’ response to a contender’s “I have deeds,” James would have written, “Show me your deeds without faith.”) Though recent translations do not include the second half of verse 18 in the quotation of the respondent (e.g., neb, niv, rsv), the nasb correctly considers this entire verse part of his remarks. The Greek, of course, does not include quotation marks, which accounts for the variations in English. It seems, however, that the respondent is throwing down the challenge, “Show me your faith apart from (choris, ‘without’) works, and I will show you my faith by (ek, ‘emerging from’) my works” (author’s trans.). —Bible Knowledge Commentary" God Bless and may the Lord God bless you in your studies! I pray He will use you to reach many for His glory!, Steve |

218 | Saints | Bible general Archive 3 | humbledbyhisgrace | 182956
Greetings srjosepena and welcome to the Study Bible Forum! Of course it's okay to believe in saints as long as it is based on biblical truth. The most recent one that I'm aware of is a young boy about 9 years old that joined the ranks of the saints just this past Sunday. Praise God! I'm sure he is not the most recent though as the Lord God is drawing his saints to Him daily! According to the scriptures, all believers are saints. "The word saint comes from the Greek word "hagios" which means “consecrated to God, holy, sacred, pious." It is almost always used in the plural, “saints.” "…Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much harm he did to Your saints at Jerusalem" (Acts 9:13). "Now as Peter was traveling through all those regions, he came down also to the saints who lived at Lydda" (Acts 9:32). "And this is just what I did in Jerusalem; not only did I lock up many of the saints in prisons … “(Acts 26:10). There is only one instance of the singular use and that is "Greet every saint in Christ Jesus…" (Philippians 4:21). In Scripture there are 67 uses of the plural “saints” compared to only one use of the singular word “saint.” Even in that one instance, a plurality of saints is in view “…every saint…” (Philippians 4:21)." - Taken from www.gotquestions.org. You can read more at http://www.gotquestions.org/saints-Christian.html on this subject. By Faith, Steve |

219 | What is your favorite Bible edition? | Ps 119:105 | humbledbyhisgrace | 182787
Greetings Brother! I have different favorites :-) KJV - Cambridge - Presented to me when I was 15 by my Grandparents. 27 years latter when I was given the gift of salvation from our Lord I ran home, dug it out of storage as I realized it was God's written word to mankind. I finally picked it up and made good use of it. It's my favorite for sentimental reasons! UNASB - Thin Line - Red Letter - Zondervan - Contains OT and NT, Concordance, Promises from the Bible, Perspectives from the Bible - This is my most used bible. I really like the NASB! I have several study bibles but my favorite is the ESV Reformation Study Bible - Ligonier Ministries - High quality, very well made, almost too nice to use :-) I'm afraid I'm going to mess it up! I couldn't do it justice so take a look around this site for more details of the features etc... http://www.reformationstudybible.com/ Actually, I do use it as what is inside is soooooo much more valuable then the appearance! Praise God for His word! By Faith, Steve |

220 | Hating your parents, what does this mean | Luke 12:51 | humbledbyhisgrace | 182739
Greetings suzievette! Welcome to the Study Bible Forum! Allow scripture to interpret scripture and perhapes the meaning will be clearer for you. Matthew 10:37 (NASB) "He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; and he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me". We must put the Lord Jesus first before all others and all other things. It should be noted as well we are to put Christ first even before ourselves (Matthew 10:38-39) Matthew 10:38-39 (NASB) 10:38 "And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me". 10:39 "He who has found his life shall lose it, and he who has lost his life for My sake shall find it". God bless, Steve |
