141 | Why did they wait? | Luke 24:1 | DocTrinsograce | 241925
Hi, Sand... Welcome to the forum! It wasn't a matter of waiting, rather the women got there at the soonest opportunity -- at daybreak per Mark 16:2. They had to travel from the city to the sepulchre, but before that they had to obtain and prepare the proper spices for embalming. Neither of these activities could begin for Jews until sunset on Saturday, the end of Sabbath. Indeed, it is quite possible that they were working on these preparations all the night, then left as soon as possible, but still in the darkness, for the tomb. Therefore, rather than seeing the women's arrival as being an unnecessary delay, we ought to see their arrival as evidence of great haste. A haste borne of their devotion to our Lord Jesus Christ. 143 | Israelites..400yrs.. in Egypt...Why? | Acts 1:7 | DocTrinsograce | 241907
Hi, Tom... Welcome to the forum! "Why" questions are always the hardest ones to answer. Who, what, when, where, and how are the easy ones to answer. Why questions drill into purposes, intentions, and design. When God gives us explanations about His intentions, then we may assert those things with confidence; but when He does not do so, then we are left only with speculation (Deuteronomy 29:29). There is a phrase that I often think about. It is found in Galatians 4:4; "the fulness of time." In other words, right exactly at the proper time; not one moment sooner or one moment later. As God works out His eternal purpose, things occur precisely at the best time. Nothing is delayed, nothing is hastened, but all His plans work out in perfect faithfulness just as He intends. Indeed, there is not one molecule in this universe that is not under His control. I apologize that your question won't be able to be answered in a fully satisfactory way. It would be presumptuous of us to spell out God's intentions when He has not revealed them to us, for who can know the mind of God? (1 Corinthians 2:13) In Him, Doc |

145 | How do I know / feel / experience God | 1 Cor 1:28 | DocTrinsograce | 241902
Dear Zeag, We are told in the Word to "consider your calling, brethren, that there were not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble; but God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong, and the base things of the world and the despised God has chosen, the things that are not, so that He may nullify the things that are, so that no man may boast before God." (1 Corinthians 1:26-29 NASB) See that? Not many wise, not many mighty, not many noble. That's us! That is you and that is me! Feelings and experiences are the things that the world offers. They are essential ingredients for what the world offers. There are even many churches who try to give feelings and experiences in order to prove to the congregants that something magical is happening. But as the Word says above, those worldly things God will make into nothing. Rather it is the things that the world despises that He will make into something. He will do this specifically so that none of us will be able to boast in ourselves, but that all of it will be of God. You see, the proof that God has chosen you is in your continued desire to know Him. He has given you redemption through Christ, otherwise you could not approach Him. He has given you His Word, otherwise you could not know Him. As a saved person there is peace between you and God -- a peace that is declared by Him in the Word -- not simply some fuzzy feeling. The world will give you feelings and experiences without substance. If God gives you substance without feelings and experience, rejoice in the substance! In a previous post I directed you to Hebrews 12. Apparently you did not notice the promise given therein: "All discipline for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful; yet to those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness." (Hebrews 12:11) Let me reiterate: The proof that you are His own is your desire for Him. You will be willing to pursue Him even in the dry wastelands. The proof that you are not His own will come if you abandon your seeking of Him. Think of it like this: If a man loves a woman, he does not stop loving her when she leaves the room. He does not stop loving her when she goes to visit family in another town. In fact, if a man goes and romances another woman while the other is out of town, we know that this man never really loved her in the first place. Right now, Paul tells us, we do not see things clearly. We cannot see the object of our love with physical eyes, for our God is invisible. But the time is coming when we will see Him (1 Corinthians 13:12). God has promised to reward those who earnestly seek Him (Hebrews 11:6); i.e., they will see Him face to face. Forgoing warm-fuzzies now is certainly worth living with Him in eternal life! So it boils down to this: If you love the Lord, then continue to pursue Him. If you love feelings and experiences so much, then go back to the world (Matthew 10:37-38). I believe that you can see the comparative value of each option (Matthew 16:26; Revelation 3:17). 147 | What is predetermination all about | John 3:16 | DocTrinsograce | 241885
Hello, Hey... Welcome to the forum! That's a good question. The word predestination appears six times in the New Testament. The Greek word is proorizo; which is a compound word, pro (meaning beforehand, prior to) and horizo (to appoint, decree, specify). Hence: to determine ahead of the time of the event itself. Here are the six references (NASB): "...to do whatever Your [God's, cf v24] hand and Your purpose predestined to occur." (Acts 4:28) "For those whom He [God, cf v28] foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren;" (Romans 8:29) "...and these whom He [God, cf v28] predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified." (Romans 8:30) "But we speak God's wisdom in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God predestined before the ages to our glory." (1 Corinthians 2:7) "He [God, cf v3] predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will." (Ephesians 1:5) "Also we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to His [God's, cf v3] purpose who works all things after the counsel of His will." (Ephesians 1:11) Go back and read the references in their contexts. Using the rules of grammar that you already know, you will be able to readily discern the truth of the matter. In Him, Doc |

148 | taken young because troubled life ahead | Ps 116:15 | DocTrinsograce | 241875
Dear Diana, Welcome to the forum! I am very saddened at hearing of the loss of your son. I can't help but to grieve with you. Sometimes when we ask "Why?" it isn't so much that we want a logical explanation. Instead it is because we think that God is not justified in doing what has caused us so much pain. It is true that we examine the lives of other people -- and even our own lives -- by what we do. In fact, that is what the Bible tells us is at the root of discernment. However, with God, we do not discern who He is by what He does, rather we discern the truth about what He does by who He is. Scripture tells us that God is perfectly good, loving, infinitely wise and powerful. There is not one molecule that is outside of His control. Therefore, we know that whatever happens will ultimately be for our good and for His glory. How that is the case, we cannot now know. Consequently, I believe that what you expressed in your question was sound, though I do not know the particular passage that you are seeking. Perhaps, however, Psalm 116:15 may be of solace to you. Meanwhile, everyone who reads this will be praying for you. People from all over the world. Most of whom do not write on this forum, but only read it. They will be faithful to pray, some of them will also have had the same experience (2 Corinthians 1:5-7). In Him, Doc |

149 | salvation before the cross | Bible general | DocTrinsograce | 241860
Hi, cutacross... Welcome to the forum! The only means of salvation is Jesus Christ, and Jesus Christ alone (John 6:44; 14:6; Acts 4:11-12). The very first proclamation of the gospel was Genesis 3:15. We are even told that this same gospel was preached to Abraham by God (Galatians 3:8). Of course it is not until the New Testament that God the Son is fully revealed in Christ (Hebrews 1:1-2). We have the benefit of seeing the atonement achieved in time past, whereas God's people prior to that time believed the Word of God while not yet having a name (1 Peter 1:10-11). From start to finish, there is but one means of salvation, and that is by the atoning work of Christ. There are many today that teach that there have been a variety of ways to be saved throughout history, by good intentions, and various other meritorious acts of men (cf 2 Timothy 4:3-4). However, such teaching is alien to orthodox Christianity and heterodox to the teaching of Scripture. See post #241850. In Him, Doc |

151 | Thank you Doc | Bible general | DocTrinsograce | 241853
Hi, Zeag... While thinking about you and praying for you yesterday, I was mindful of something that has helped me over the years. Ancient Israel, complained that God had brought them into the wilderness for no better purpose than to kill them off (Exodus 16:3). Here they were, sitting in the desert all depressed. By that time, God had: brought plagues on Egypt, sparing them; removed them from slavery, with the voluntarily given plunder of their masters; parted the waters of the dead sea, saving them, while drowning their enemies; provided a pillar of smoke by day and a pillar of fire by night; miraculously provisioned them with food and water; etc. etc. So, you think, Israel, that God has just done all this so as to wipe you out? Yeah. Right. None of the miracles that Israel experienced can even compare to the greatest miracle of all, the redemption of a single sinner, by grace alone, through faith alone, in the atonement of Christ alone. If our Father didn't even spare His own Son for us (Romans 8;32), can we really believe that He did all of that just to wipe us out in the desert? Perhaps keeping that in mind will be as helpful for you as it has been for me. You are also absolutely right about your suffering being evidence that God loves you. You must have read Hebrews 12 as suggested! I do not think of it as punishment. Instead, think of it as the writer of Hebrews suggested, the loving discipline of a Father who spared nothing to save your soul. The Bible uses the imagery of a potter and a lump of clay (Romans 9:21). God knows what He is forming in us, even when the process is not a comfortable one! For now I suggest that you keep reading the Gospels. Again, don't worry about what you do not understand. That will come in time. Now is the time to be concerned about what you do understand. You are gaining the skills and the discipline to read His Word. In the mean time, we are praying for you, your health, and your walk with God. We are also praising Him for the clear evidences of His working in your life. In Him, Doc |

152 | Faith like a mustard seed? please help | Luke 17:6 | DocTrinsograce | 241849
Hello, Zeag... The passage you are citing Matthew 17:20. However, always read the Bible in context. You need to know who is speaking, to whom they are speaking, and the circumstances under which things are being discussed. Only after those things are answered, will you be able to find personal application. Instead, you are trying to go about it in the opposite direction! Nonetheless, the Master used the expression "faith like a mustard seed" on more than one occasion. See also Luke 17:5-10. The phrase "like a mustard seed" is similar to what we mean when we say "the size of a grain of sand" or "as small as the head of a pin." It just means tiny. Now read through Luke 17:5-10. Ask the right questions as I advised above. You can do this. It will take some effort, as all things do that are worthwhile. In fact, in all your seeking for yourself, perhaps you will find the proper application about who is really to be served. When you are praying according to His will -- and this passage will tell you about that -- He will answer. The evidence of your faith will not be found in your emotions, nor will it be found in the answer to your prayers, rather it will be found in your persistence in obeying your new Lord. In Him, Doc |

154 | does god punish us for sinning | Heb 12:2 | DocTrinsograce | 241844
Hi, Zeag... Yes, God does and has punished people for sin. As you study the Word, I will leave it to you to find specific instances in Scripture for when He has done so! However, whether that applies to your situation is an entirely different matter. But you are a Christian, consequently you should know that all things come from His hand, as I said to you early. Therefore, seek Him and His glory through your circumstances. In Him, Doc |

155 | Please help a new Christian | Heb 12:2 | DocTrinsograce | 241839
Hi, Zeagle50... Welcome to the forum! Also, welcome to the Family of God. Scripture tells us that God is the one who originates us in the faith and He is also the one who will perfect it (Hebrews 12:2). He does not save us so that we will feel things or to spare us from suffering in life. Instead, all He does is for His glory and our ultimate good. What has begun in you is a transformation as the Lord transforms us to the image of Christ. Thus, you see, that He has started this relationship with you by what He has done in saving you. None of it matters how you feel. Rather these things are facts. The truth of facts are not changed by how we feel about them. What you need to realize is that the Scriptures are the most explicit speaking of God to you. Isn't that also part of having a relationship; i.e., communication? The Word of God is far more of His speaking to you than anything you might hear with ears or feel in the heart or experience in your life. Therefore, I would encourage you to read through Hebrews 12:1-13 in your current circumstances. Read it through over and over. Remember, do not worry about what you do NOT understand, rather focus on what you DO understand. It will be in the things that you DO understand that God will be dealing with you. Then I would suggest that you read through the gospels, one chapter a day, all year long. You'll have read them four times by 2016! It is in the Word that our Lord Jesus Christ makes Himself known (Hebrews 1:1-2). Finally, we will all be praying for you as you grow in Him. Perhaps He will bring healing to your body. Nonetheless, as you read Hebrews 12, you will know that everything that He does with us has the ultimate goal of glory in Him. In Him, Doc |
