81 | What does it take to grow in church. | 1 Pet 1:2 | DocTrinsograce | 242429
Hi, coretta... Welcome to the forum! According to the apostle Peter it begins in redemption (the tri-fold work of our triune God): "according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, by the sanctifying work of the Spirit, to obey Jesus Christ and be sprinkled with His blood: May grace and peace be yours in the fullest measure." (1 Peter 1:2) That passage by Peter is really something (vv2-11). God begins the work internally in regeneration, then out of that work we participate with him in the continual increase of the seven attributes that he mentions in vv5-7. Those attributes are internal, but they manifest themselves externally. He tells us that if these qualities are yours and are increasing then shall we be fruitful in Christ (v8). But if we lack these qualities the warning is dire (v9). Then he concludes: "Therefore, brethren, be all the more diligent to make certain about His calling and choosing you; for as long as you practice these things, you will never stumble; for in this way the entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be abundantly supplied to you." (2 Peter 1:10-11) Thus, our Lord has provided us with salvation, and with the activities by which we grow in the institution of the church that He has gifted us. Wonderful, isn't it? In Him, Doc |

A few more references for you: Surely You set them in slippery places; You cast them down to destruction. (Psalms 73:18) It is good for me that I was afflicted, That I may learn Your statutes. (Psalms 119:71) This precious value, then, is for you who believe; but for those who disbelieve, "THE STONE WHICH THE BUILDERS REJECTED, THIS BECAME THE VERY CORNER stone," and, "A STONE OF STUMBLING AND A ROCK OF OFFENSE"; for they stumble because they are disobedient to the word, and to this doom they were also appointed. (1 Peter 2:7-8) |

83 | SEARCHING OR THE TRUTH | NT general | DocTrinsograce | 242423
Hi, FytRobert... The word for heaven was idiomatic in Bible times as it is today. There were generally three references to heaven: The first heaven was what they called the atmosphere, the second heaven was what they called the area containing the stars and planets, and the third heaven was the invisible dwelling place of God. 84 | SEARCHING OR THE TRUTH | 1 John 3:2 | DocTrinsograce | 242419
Hi, FytRobert... Final or ultimate sanctification is the last stage of the overall process of redemption. This occurs for the elect either at the Return of Christ (1 John 3:2; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-15) or upon death (2 Corinthians 2:5-10). For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us. For the anxious longing of the creation waits eagerly for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself also will be set free from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now. And not only this, but also we ourselves, having the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our body. For in hope we have been saved, but hope that is seen is not hope; for who hopes for what he already sees? (Romans 8:18-24) Baptism is not a condition of redemption (Ephesians 2:8), rather it is an expression of what God has done in us, before the congregation of saints. In Him, Doc |

85 | is this a complection color? | Gen 25:25 | DocTrinsograce | 242409
Dear LiKiMa, The Hebrew word would be something like our English word ruddy. Think of, for example, a red headed Scotsman, with a ruddy complexion. Apparently this was what Esau looked like. It is not unknown for newborn babies to have hair on their bodies. Apparently Esau had this attribute on into his adult life (cf Genesis 27:11). In Him, Doc |

86 | Why did God cast Lucifer out of heaven? | Luke 10:18 | DocTrinsograce | 242405
Hi, LiKiMa... Satan rebelled against God (Isaiah 14:12-14), being unsatisfied with his place. God could not be displaced even if He had wanted to be! By definition there can be but one God. In Him, Doc |

Hi, LiKiMa... Welcome to the forum! 1 Timothy 3:6 tells us that pride was at the root of the devil's disobedience. Compare with Jude 6. In Him, Doc |

88 | Should pastors/preachers be evaluated | 1 Cor 4:4 | DocTrinsograce | 242360
Hi, Sister Azure... I cannot speak to how our Lutheran brethren handle this question. However, I do have some experience with Historic Baptists (ARBCA) and Presbyterians (OPC). The elders are ordained in both groups. Every church has at least three elders, often more. Some of the elders are teaching elders while others are what are called ruling elders. The definitions and roles vary somewhat even among individual congregations. Nonetheless, the elders are always meeting together for mutual edification and accountability. In addition, there is often a lot of interaction with other Reformed congregations. If the churches are newly planted (i.e., less than five years old), then the elders also meet regularly with their founding congregations. In this latter situation, there are measurable goals that are set for the new congregation. Often elders from one congregation will be assigned to a new congregation when their elder boards (or "sessions" as they are called by Presbyterians), lack qualified men. Sometimes whole families will be asked to attend a congregation that needs solid congregants. When needed, a teaching elder will take the pulpit of a congregation in times of need. I have even seen this done between Baptists, Presbyterians, and Dutch or Reformed Church of America pastors. With a plurality of elders, efforts are continually made to insure that the men are walking in a manner worthy of the gospel (Philippians 1:27). The elders are not only measured by what they teach and affirm, but also by how they live. Orthodoxy gives rise to orthopraxy. This combination is commanded by our Lord, and forms the basis of all teaching. In Him, Doc PS I recently noticed the following short article. You might find it interesting; although it does not have direct bearing on your question. http://www.ligonier.org/blog/5-things-look-church/ |

90 | why was Jacob holding on to his brother | Gen 38:28 | DocTrinsograce | 242329
Hi, Happy... Welcome to the forum! Jacob (the grabber) was holding on to his brother Esau's heel as an indication by Divine Providence of Jacob's desire to usurp Esau's birthright. This became a pattern that manifested itself throughout his life. A pattern that later signified the man of God's own choosing. See Malachi 1 and Romans 9 for the particulars of how this was a picture for us. In Him, Doc |

94 | Does God have an Elect set of people? | Rom 8:29 | DocTrinsograce | 242315
Hi, Moonzzup... Welcome to the forum! Because of the sin of Adam, every human being is destined to hell. What is more, in their lives they affirm the justice of God's judgement "The wages of sin is death" (Romans 6:23) for "there is none righteous, not even one; there is none who understands, there is none who seeks for God; all have turned aside, together they have become useless; there is none that does good, there is not even one" (Romans 3:10-12). God does not need to do anything to these men. His wrath will come upon each of them. He does this to the glory of His justice. However, God chose a remnant for His own (1 Corinthians 1:26-29). We are further told that this choosing was made by God even before He laid the foundations of the Earth (Ephesians 1:4-5). Although there is nothing in His elect that makes them worthy of being His own, He does this to the glory of His mercy. This is a marvelous truth that the Scripture affirms over and over. Therefore call out to this almighty, thrice holy God, that He might save you from the Wrath to come (1 Thessalonians 1:10). His sheep hear His voice and respond (John 10:27). In Him, Doc |

How to Glorify God on Marriage Profanation Day by Dr. James White 1) Begin the day with prayer and Bible reading, submitting your mind to the Lordship of Christ. 2) If you are married, pray for your spouse, expressing thanks to God for your marriage, and imploring the Almighty to protect your marriage so that it may be a witness to the world of what God intended. 3) Review the teaching of Jesus on the foundation of marriage in Matthew 19:4-6. Note especially that the Creator Himself established gender, the role of the husband, of the wife, of the father, and the mother, and that the only relationship He will ever bless is one that fits in this paradigm: one man, one woman. 4) Pray for grace to love rebel sinners who will be rejoicing in the profaning of God's good gifts, for you, too, once hated what is good and loved what is evil. Remember, you have been redeemed from the world, transferred from the kingdom of darkness to the kingdom of light, and that all of grace. 5) Pray for the younger generation that has been robbed of transcendent meaning and purpose. Pray for God's people, those young folks still being called out of the darkness into the light, for they will face a far more difficult world than most of us older followers of Jesus in the United States have ever faced. 6) Do not look backwards and long for the "good ol' days" when a semblance of moral sanity prevailed by God's grace in our land. Realize in the midst of judgment we are called to be salt and light. 7) Go out and tell someone Jesus is Lord. Lord over all of life. Lord over creation, Lord over man's institutions, Lord over all human authorities. Be salt. Be light. The darkness is deepening daily, and that means our light is all that much more necessary. The denizens of the darkness will try to extinguish that light. They cannot. |

97 | What is meaning of the meaning Passover. | Exodus | DocTrinsograce | 242288
Hi, havoh... Passover is a festival that commemorates God's release of Israel from captivity in Egypt (Exodus 12) and is mandated in the Law (Leviticus 25). It prefigures the delivery from captivity of all of God's people through the atonement of Christ on Calvary (1 Corinthians 5:7b). Through the offering of the perfect Lamb, God secured the redemption of all those called to Him throughout time (1 Peter 1:19-20). In Him, Doc |

98 | Trusting | Rom 8:32 | DocTrinsograce | 242281
Dear Nadia, Welcome to the forum! "What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things?" (Romans 8:31-32) People sometimes think that Christianity will provide you with good feelings and guidance for all the decisions we make in life. God never promises those things. Our feelings come and go. We are faced with decisions every hour and every day. What we build upon, is the solid rock of God's Word (Hebrews 1:1-3). Thus, we have from Scripture exactly what God's will is for you, Nadia. "For this is the will of God, your sanctification" (1 Thessalonians 4:3a). Stand on what He has said, no matter how you may feel. Walk in obedience to His word, no matter the cost. Equipped with these things, you will be able to make choices that bring Him glory (1 Corinthians 10:31). These are the things that Holy Spirit will guide you to through the Scriptures alone. Furthermore, everyone reading this will also be praying for you! In Him, Doc |

100 | Faith in God during Troubled times | 1 Cor 10:13 | DocTrinsograce | 242273
Hi, Collette... Welcome to the forum! Actually, the bible never says that God will not put extra problems on us that we cannot handle. That is just superstitious twaddle. Indeed, if you think about it, we have the problem of sin upon us; we struggle with the world; we deal with our adversary the devil. We cannot handle any of these things. God said, "Can the Ethiopian change his skin Or the leopard his spots?" (Jeremiah 13:23a) This is very despairing, difficult, and discouraging! However, there is good news! Our Lord Jesus said, "With people this is impossible, but with God all things are possible." (Matthew 19:26b) You see, although we are unable to help ourselves, God is able to rescue us. He has an eternal purpose (Ephesians 3:11), plans formed long ago and carried out in perfect faithfulness (Isaiah 25:1). In our weakness and inability, God grants grace (2 Corinthians 12:9). So tell your friend the good news! In Him, Doc |
