Hi, Germ... Welcome to the forum! Actually, these predictions did take place under Titus Flavius Vespasianus. Josephus writes that many Jews were, at that time, shipped down the Nile and sold as slaves. In Him, Doc |

42 | SEARCHING FOR THE TRUTH | Col 3:13 | DocTrinsograce | 242888
Hi, Robert... Good question. Here is how I attempt to walk out forgiveness. 1. Keep in mind that we are commanded to forgive. 2. Remember that no one has ever wronged you more than you have wronged God. 3. Choose to forgive those who have wronged you. 4. Pray for grace to forgive, as it is only possible through our Lord. 5. Act the way you would act toward the object of your forgiveness in a way that you would do when forgiving someone. 6. Use the contrary feelings that will arise from time to time as signals to seek out more grace from the Lord. 7. Express continual gratitude to God who has forgiven us so very much! 8. Forebear with others to the same extent that you have been foreborne by God. It might well be worth reading the book of Colossians as well. In Him, Doc |

45 | Thanks EdB | Bible general | DocTrinsograce | 242845
Hi, John... Ed may continue to interact with you, and I welcome him to do so. However, there is a convention we've adopted in the forum to only mark as questions those that begin a thread. If you ask someone directly, then mark it as a note. They will be notified, regardless. This also keeps the main forum page clear for new questions. Here is a helpful source: https://www.monergism.com/ Type in your search words. There are many articles and lectures available. You might want to use the search word canon, apocrypha, etc. These books you're talking about are certainly odd in many respects. I've read through them, as Ed has probably done, too. For those of us from a Reformed background: we actually have the following explicit statement in our confessions: "The books commonly called Apocrypha, not being of divine inspiration, are no part of the Canon of Scripture; and therefore are of no authority in the Church of God, nor to be any otherwise approved, or made use of, than other human writings." In other words, to us, these books are not to be depended on... for a "rule of saving knowledge, faith, and obedience." In Him, Doc |

46 | SEARCHING FOR THE TRUTH | John 17:1 | DocTrinsograce | 242777
Hi, Robert... John 17 is our Lord's High Priestly prayer for all of those who belong to Him from the far past on through to the consummation of His Kingdom on earth. It is thought that in John 13, Christ is speaking to His disciples as they walked out of the temple. It is thought that John 15 was when they were walking through a gate on which grape vines were carved in bas relief by Herod. They would walk out of Jerusalem through the Kidron Valley and up to the Garden of Gethsemane. It was in the evening, and the sacrifices in the Temple were being made so that the waters were stained scarlet. Many of the Jews had come from afar and were camped out in the valley. As the night darkened, I often imagine that the tents of the travelers were glowing from the olive oil lamps they had with them. Then, in Gethsemane our Lord knelt and prayed the prayer that we have in chapter 17. He prays for the glorification of the Father and the Son. Sometimes this prayer is called the Great Intercessory Prayer. Read it through -- in its entirety -- and see how He prays for His church. In my humble opinion, Paul comments with thoughts of this prayer in the second chapter of Philippians. In Him, Doc |

Hi, Robert... I am not certain what passage you are thinking about. If I remember correctly there are three historic instances of tongues: Among the Jewish Christians (Acts 2:4); among the Samaritans, the first fruit of the gentiles (Acts 10:46); and among the gentiles (Acts 19:6). In each case Apostles were present. Thus Christ's prophecy was fulfilled per Acts 1:7-8. In each of these instances other characteristics of their conversion became evident: there was a powerful evangelism, there were lives utterly changed as they became new creatures, there were special acts for common weil, there were increasing knowledge of through the Apostles teaching, and God was being glorified explicitly in their praise and implicitly in righteousness. If you want to see the additional gifts that were a sign for the primitive church, read through the book the Acts of the Apostles. It is a logical Part 2, so to speak, of Luke's Gospel. In Him, Doc |

51 | ETYMOLOGY OF WOMAN | Gen 2:23 | DocTrinsograce | 242732
Hello, Rolf... The first mention of the word woman is in the following passage: The LORD God fashioned into a woman the rib which He had taken from the man, and brought her to the man. The man said, "This is now bone of my bones, And flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man." (Genesis 2:22-23) The word is nashiym in Hebrew. From looking at this in the past, I have the general sense that it is the feminine version of man; or maybe by extension out of man. In Him, Doc |

Ma'am, might I suggest that you write something about yourself in your profile? This is generally very helpful for the rest of us. For example, if we know that you are Roman Catholic, we will understand that certain questions are already settled for you. Or if you are a Methodist, then we know that much of your theology is rooted in John Wesley's teaching. In this way, we reduce the possibility of bringing offense, and enhance the possibility that we will render appropriate answers for you. :-)

54 | SEEKING FOR THE TRUTH | Matt 13:10 | DocTrinsograce | 242715
Hi, Robert... The disciples asked our Lord Jesus that very question. Here, let me pull it directly from the passage in Matthew: And the disciples came and said to Him, "Why do You speak to them in parables?" Jesus answered them, "To you it has been granted to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been granted. For whoever has, to him more shall be given, and he will have an abundance; but whoever does not have, even what he has shall be taken away from him. Therefore I speak to them in parables; because while seeing they do not see, and while hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand. In their case the prophecy of Isaiah is being fulfilled, which says, 'YOU WILL KEEP ON HEARING, BUT WILL NOT UNDERSTAND; YOU WILL KEEP ON SEEING, BUT WILL NOT PERCEIVE; FOR THE HEART OF THIS PEOPLE HAS BECOME DULL, WITH THEIR EARS THEY SCARCELY HEAR, AND THEY HAVE CLOSED THEIR EYES, OTHERWISE THEY WOULD SEE WITH THEIR EYES, HEAR WITH THEIR EARS, AND UNDERSTAND WITH THEIR HEART AND RETURN, AND I WOULD HEAL THEM.' But blessed are your eyes, because they see; and your ears, because they hear. For truly I say to you that many prophets and righteous men desired to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it. (Matthew 13:10-17) In Him, Doc |

55 | what time of year is Abib | Deut 16:1 | DocTrinsograce | 242698
Hi, Rolff... John Gill, still recognized as an expert in Judaic life and culture, writes the following: "[Abib] sometimes called Nisan; it answered to part, of our March, and part of April; it was an observable month, to be taken notice of; it was called Abib, from the corn then appearing in ear [see Strong's H29], and beginning to ripen, and all things being in their verdure; the Septuagint calls it the month of new fruit; it was appointed the first of the months for ecclesiastic things, and was the month in which the Israelites went out of Egypt, and the first passover was kept in it, and therefore deserving of regard. See Exodus 12:2." In Him, Doc |

56 | Sabbath to Sunday Worship? | NT general | DocTrinsograce | 242690
Hi, Justme... The primitive church adopted this practice under the auspices of the Apostles. We have solidly received this to the present day in our orthopraxy. The Scriptures themselves give us indirect references as to why. For example, I find Hebrews 4 to do just that. For further study, you might find the 22 chapter of the 1689 London Baptist Confession helpful. The following link also gives Scriptural references: http://www.vor.org/truth/1689/1689bc22.html In Him, Doc |

58 | SEARCHING FOR THE TRUTH | Matt 12:7 | DocTrinsograce | 242678
Dear Robert, Yes, this would be a form of intercession. The word comes from the Latin, literally meaning to "go between." In the Greek it means to instrumentally secure by entreaty to an authority for someone underneath that authority. Thus, it always has to do with mediating between two parties. In the case of the church members, praying on their behalf (the first party) to God (the second party). You make entreaty to God for a brother. In Him, Doc |

59 | SEEKING FOR THE TRUTH | Matt 12:7 | DocTrinsograce | 242674
Hi, Robert... Intercession is a priestly function. It seeks to make supplication to God on behalf of those who are unable or unwilling to do so. Intercession is the pleading to God for mercy, grace, and forgiveness of the people for whom we are praying. There are many examples of this in Scripture -- from Melchizedek to Moses; from David to Daniel; from Jeremiah to Jesus; and from each of the apostles. We are told that our prayer accomplishes a great deal when offered up in righteousness (James 5:6b). That righteousness must be unwavering (v1:6) and made manifest in good works and in the avoidance of faults (v2:24). Obviously, the person praying must be in right standing with God, for righteousness does not exist outside of God's eternal purpose. The new creature demonstrates his transformation in a growing love of God, a growing love of the brethren, and a growing love of the Word. Many are those who will still be called to Christ. Thus, we care deeply for those who are still imprisoned in sin -- those who will one day be brethren. We ask that God would open the eyes of their mind to the glorious gospel of Christ (2 Corinthians 4:4). Continue to search the Word for those things that will bolster your prayers; always asking the Lord to grant you yourself His mercy, grace, and compassion. Why not start with a study of Ephesians? In it Paul often breaks out in prayer and praise. In Him, Doc |
