207 | Why is life capitalized in Acts 5:20 | Acts 5:20 | DocTrinsograce | 241367
Hi, hochimoe... Welcome to the forum, pastor! It is difficult to know precisely what the translators were thinking. I do not know of any documentation of their deliberations, except in general purpose. Robert Jamieson describes this phrase as a "beautiful expression for that Life in the Risen One which was the burden of their preaching!" John Calvin and John Gill, in their commentaries, say more, but they tend to concur. This is somewhat different from your supposition, but if we think more broadly, it certainly would encompass Christ's life, our life in Him, life through the gospel, etc. Perhaps the phrase hearkens back to the words of our Lord as in John 6:63, 68; 12:50; 17:3. 210 | Timothy's age | 2 Tim 2:22 | DocTrinsograce | 241341
Hi, 00123... The designation "agapetos teknon" does not necessarily imply that Timothy was a child (chronologically). As John Calvin states in his commentary on the phrase, "By this designation he not only testifies his love of Timothy, but procures respect and submission to him; because he wishes to be acknowledged in him, as one who may justly be called his son, the reason of the appellation is, that he had begotten him in Christ; for, although this honor belongs to God alone [Father], yet it is also transferred to ministers, whose agency he employs for regenerating us." Although I have assumed that Timothy was younger than Paul (cf Acts 16:1), it always seemed to me that this designation was more a ministerial and affectionate one. Paul used the same phrase in addressing Titus. The pattern of use of father and son in this way was commonly repeated in the early church. It is, perhaps, for this reason that it is retained in the Church of Rome and in Eastern Orthodoxy. In Him, Doc |

212 | Naming Created Things | Gen 2:19 | DocTrinsograce | 241313
Hi, Lionstrong... Having the name of a thing is a kind of dominion. A label is the means by which we invoke the character and nature of a thing. It certainly represents the beginning of being able to envelope a thing intellectually. It is difficult to imagine our ability to domesticate animals without having the ability to reference their kind by a name by which they are called. I do not think that the naming of the animals was a matter of God taking some kind of shortcut. Rather the process of seeing, characterizing, and naming creatures brought man close to God's creation -- which thing increases God's glory. In Him, Doc |

217 | Did Paul ride a horse to Thessalonica? | Acts | DocTrinsograce | 241281
Hi, FCN... Welcome to the forum! The biggest problem we have is that the Scriptures do not tell us. We wouldn't want to assert something with greater authority than the Word actually gives us to assert something. I do not know of any prohibition against equestrian use for Jews except on Shabbat. Keep in mind, though, that a horse, even today, costs as much to care for as does a human being. Consequently, regular use of horses tended to be something predominantly reserved for the wealthy or important people. Even in American history the horse only became ubiquitous because of the unusual distances. Common people could rarely afford keeping them. In Him, Doc |

220 | Timothy's holy calling | 2 Tim 1:9 | DocTrinsograce | 241270
Hi, 00123... Notice that the pronoun is "us" not "you." This is the calling of all believers to a life of holiness (Hebrews 3:1). Whereas we were once sinners and enemies (Ephesians 1:18; 4:1), now purchased (Acts 20:28) we belong entirely to God, separated from the world. In Him, Doc |
