AMPLIFIED 2015 | Genesis 2:19 So the LORD God formed out of the ground every animal of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called a living creature, that was its name. |
Bible Question: Here's a question. What are your thoughts about this question? Was the naming of the animals, or more broadly, is the naming of things in creation part of our calling to exercise dominion over the earth? |
Bible Answer: Hi, Lionstrong... Having the name of a thing is a kind of dominion. A label is the means by which we invoke the character and nature of a thing. It certainly represents the beginning of being able to envelope a thing intellectually. It is difficult to imagine our ability to domesticate animals without having the ability to reference their kind by a name by which they are called. I do not think that the naming of the animals was a matter of God taking some kind of shortcut. Rather the process of seeing, characterizing, and naming creatures brought man close to God's creation -- which thing increases God's glory. In Him, Doc |
