AMPLIFIED 2015 | Genesis 2:19 So the LORD God formed out of the ground every animal of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called a living creature, that was its name. |
Bible Question: Here's a question. What are your thoughts about this question? Was the naming of the animals, or more broadly, is the naming of things in creation part of our calling to exercise dominion over the earth? |
Bible Answer: This is almost impossible to answer since scripture doesn't address God's reasoning here. That said I think it was God's way of simplifying the process. He allowed man to man things using names that made sense to man. The alternative would have been to name everything and then teach man the names. On the dominion issue I think that gets misunderstood misused by many. God was, is and always will be in control. Man's dominion is nothing more than man's ability to overpower most of nature. Every animal fears man. Man has diverted rivers, dried up swamps and made swamps. We have moved earth from one place and taken it to another. We are like ants busy at the task at hand. However we have never changed the nature of animals, ants or any part of creation. We may have eliminated them, moved them, domesticated them but the nature that God placed in them remains. |
