101 | true explaction of 23 psalm | Ps 23:1 | terrib | 149511
Hello Wilma62, Welcome to the forum. Since we do not know what the church taught about Psalm 23 to give the same message would be difficult. But, offered below is a commentary from Matthew Henry. "Many of David's psalms are full of complaints, but this is full of comforts, and the expressions of delight in God's great goodness and dependence upon him. It is a psalm which has been sung by good Christians, and will be while the world stands, with a great deal of pleasure and satisfaction. I. The psalmist here claims relation to God, as his shepherd (Psa 23:1). II. He recounts his experience of the kind things God had done for him as his shepherd (Psa 23:2, Psa 23:3, Psa 23:5). III. Hence he infers that he should want no good (Psa 23:1), that he needed to fear no evil (Psa 23:4), that God would never leave nor forsake him in a way of mercy; and therefore he resolves never to leave nor forsake God in a way of duty (Psa 23:6). In this he had certainly an eye, not only to the blessings of God's providence, which made his outward condition prosperous, but to the communications of God's grace, received by a lively faith, and returned in a warm devotion, which filled his soul with joy unspeakable. And, as in the foregoing psalm he represented Christ dying for his sheep, so here he represents Christians receiving the benefit of all the care and tenderness of that great and good shepherd." And since we are sheep may I offer a personal view. Permit me a little latitude and envision it from a sheep's viewpoint. "The LORD is my shepherd": I am a sheep and a dumb animal but I follow the one I have trust in. "I shall not want": there is nothing more that I desire but to be with my Shepard. "He maketh me to lie down in green pastures": in restful places in which I can dwell safely. "He leadeth me beside the still waters": by the tranquil waters, for He knows that if rough waters were to take me away my wool would get wet and I would drown. He will not put on me more than I can handle. "He restoreth my soul": when I am wearied, worn and exhausted, He takes me into His arms and comforts me, caresses me, whispers His care for me and re-kindles in me life, again. "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.": And when I go from pasture to pasture and I know not what awaits me there, for they are new to me, I will take comfort, because I hear His voice, His guiding words and whistles and I can feel the gentle tapping of His staff keeping me on the path so I will not fall into the ravines. "Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.": and when I get to those new pastures with their lush greens and the wolves that are there waiting to devour me, there He is, ever watchful, keeping me safe, anointing me with all His kindness. Oh, how I love my Shepard, my joy cannot be contained as my bleetings proclaim. "Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.": I am smitten with this Shepard, only good can come from my relationship with Him. I will stay with this Shepard, for who else will care for me like this One and I love Him for it. Hope this helps, terrib |

104 | Center of my Life? | Ps 118:8 | terrib | 112110
Dear members, I know this is not a trivia forum, but this is too amazing to pass up. Q: What is the shortest chapter in the Bible? A: Psalms 117 Q: What is the longest chapter in the Bible? A: Psalms 119 Q: Which chapter is in the center of the Bible? A: Psalms 118 Fact: There are 594 chapters before Psalms 118 Fact: There are 594 chapters after Psalms 118 Add these numbers up and you get 1188. Q: What is the center verse in the Bible? A: Psalms 118:8 Q: Does this verse say something significant about God's perfect will for our lives? The next time someone says they would like to find God's perfect will for their lives and that they want to be in the center of His will, just send them to the center of His Word! Psalms 118:8 (NKJV) "It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man." Now isn't that odd how this worked out (or was God in the center of it)? terrib |

105 | Center of my Life? | Ps 118:8 | terrib | 112122
Hi Punkiedo, Being attacked (not happened yet) does not bother me for I know there are only two religions in this world - God's and Satan's. By the way, there will not be any Pentecostals in Heaven nor will there be any Baptists there nor any other branch by which they have been named, only Christians. So that part I understand and forbear. Eph 4:16 From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love. I have not checked out that piece of trivia either but thought it was interesting. I do know that chapter and verse numbering is not in the original manuscripts but interesting none the less. Thanks for your response. I did read your profile. Welcome aboard! terrib |

106 | Aleph, Beth, Gimel, what is this? | Ps 119:1 | terrib | 116971
Psalm 119 It consists of twenty two parts, according to the number of the letters in the Hebrew alphabet; the names of which letters stand between each part; and every part consists of eight verses, all of which begin with the same letter: thus, for instance, the first eight verses begin with the letter, "aleph", and the second eight verses begin with the letter, "beth", and so on throughout; hence the Masorah calls this psalm the Great Alphabet. terrib |

107 | how can u believe in god? | Ps 135:6 | terrib | 146809
Welcome kpizzle14, Thank you for asking this question. Why do you think you happened to come to this forum? Did you decide this on your own or somewhere inside you, you are looking for some answers? I think you came for answers. Answers to something or someone calling you. I see God's hand in this so that you can understand and see what He wants to give you and help you understand. If you eat bad meat and get sick, is it God's fault? If you murder someone and go to the gallos, is it God's fault? If a nation through its greed causes its people to suffer, is it God's fault? The decisions of people are at fault, not God. If you eat the bad meat don't you have to suffer the consequences? If you kill someone, don't you have to suffer the consequences? This is what God is showing you, calling you, trying to get your attention, so He can show you why these things happen. That is why you have come here. To get some answers. Remember when your Mom or Dad said not to do something and you did it anyway? Yes, and you got in trouble for doing it, didn't you? Well, the same thing has happened to the world. When God created the world He put on it a perfect place called Eden. In it He put two people called Adam and Eve. Okay, you heard all this before, but the answers you are seeking all start from that perfect place. Remember, "Don't touch that honey, it's hot". Yes, well you got a blister didn't you, because you just had to touch it. And you did it because you could. You were free to act on your own. You were free to choose. You could either believe what was said was for your own good or you could suffer the consequnces, just like the bad meat. So it was with Adam and Eve. God told them that if they ate of a particular fruit it would be bad for them. But, they had to eat it. Just like you got the blister. Well, this choice that they made was more involved than just a blister. They were innocent and walked with God in the garden and had peace with Him and talked with Him. They were buddies! But something happens to a companionship when one of the parties betrays the trust of the other. And since God created them and now they knew that what they had done was against His wishes they hid from Him. They created a rift between them and God. Their inner being had been changed because of the knowing that they had gone against their friend. Their spirits had become separated. They now knew the difference between right and wrong. They had sinned against their one true companion their one true love. And because of that sin, even their offspring would inherit that seperation of spirit also. And so on down the line until today. We all have sinned just by inheritance and we all have lost that fellowship that once stood. So man has gone on during the ages and has done his own thing. And still, just like the bad meat, has had to suffer the consequences. Sickness, murder, war. God's doing or ours? There can only be one answer. We did it. You can't pass the buck on this one. But...but, there is a way out of all this turmoil. And if God was as unloving as you say, He would never have offered such a gift to this people, that have done nothing but create situations that put so much turmoil in the world. 108 | Does the Devil know our thoughts? | Ps 139:23 | terrib | 112326
FWH, Satan is a fallen angel: Jud 1:6 And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. Angels watch over us: Heb 1:14 Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation? Satan is powerful: Jud 1:9 Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee. Only God knows your thoughts: Psa 139:23 Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: Isa 66:18 For I know their works and their thoughts: it shall come, that I will gather all nations and tongues; and they shall come, and see my glory. Mat 12:25 And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand: But Satan does keep track of us: Job 1:7 And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it. Mat 12:43 When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none. Mat 12:44 Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished. As God the Father has many angels watching us and ministering to us so Satan watches. Though he can not read our minds he is aware of what can turn us toward sin. He has seen how we respond to various weaknesses and knows how to temp us. And that is why God says, Eph 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Hope this helps, terrib |

110 | How is hope deferred? | Prov 13:12 | terrib | 112957
Hi mommapbs, Hope deferred, that is, the object hoped for; if it is not enjoyed as soon as expected, at least if it is delayed any length of time, the mind becomes weary, uneasy, the heart sinks and fails, and the spirit of the person is ready for despondency, ready to give up the enjoyment the desired object would bring; whether it be deliverance from any evil, or the possession of any good thing or the enjoyment that comes when your love finally gets home when late. Loose hope and here comes apostacy, here comes grief, here comes death. But truth, faith and patience for that hope will be rewarded so says the Scriptures: (Rev 2:7) ... him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God. (Rev 2:11) ... He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death. (Rev 2:17) ... him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it. (Rev 2:26) ... he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations: (Rev 3:5) He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels. (Rev 3:12) Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name. (Rev 3:21) ... him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne. And the last: (Rev 21:7 KJV) He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. (Pro 13:12 KJV) ... but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life. Hope deferred, waiting for my Lord. terrib |

111 | How is hope deferred? | Prov 13:12 | terrib | 112966
mommapbs, You asked, "how could it make the heart sick?". It doesn't make the heart sick in the physical sense but in an emotional sense; wanting the promise to come but having to wait for that which is promised, with a longing that sometimes comes to the tune of pining. Like wanting to be with your loved ones and at a time they are separated from you and your heart aches for them. Your heart is sick for them. You said, "Jesus said that He came to give us life - abundant life, right here, right now!" and "He gives us HIS desires", yes these are true and because we have these things now they are no longer a hope, they are a reality. Hope is something you wait for, something in the future. Spiritually we are seated with Him in heavenly places (Eph 2:6) but physically we are bound, for now, to this Earth, this dust. (2Co 5:6 KJV) "Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord:" For as Moses knew God by voice and fire, his desire was to look upon His face but this flesh cannot contain the glory of His physical presence for the flesh is corrupt and nothing corrupt may enter into His presence. So we hope for the incorruptible. For if we hope in Christ only for the things of this life, or if our hope in Him is bounded with this life, and confined to the things of it, and does not reach to the things of another life, the things of eternity, the invisible glories of another world, to be enjoyed in soul and body; "...we are of all men the most miserable." (1 Cor 15:19) So, "exercising the hope that is within us" is no longer hope but faith, for faith is that of the present and hope that of the future. I guess sometimes I get a little melancholy, for I am ready to depart and soon the time will be, as with all of us, for as my youth was just yesterday my time will be as close as tomorrow. (Rom 15:13 KJV) Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost. terrib |

114 | god helps those who help themselves | Prov 28:26 | terrib | 147617
Greetings ram658, "Many people believe that quote came from the Bible. Many people obviously don't read their Bibles. This particular quote is nowhere to be found in all of Scripture. So where did it come from? Would you believe it came from GREEK MYTHOLOGY?? Specifically, it came from one of Aesop's fables. There's a story about a wagoner and Hercules that runs like this: "A Wagoner was once driving a heavy load along a very muddy way. He came to a part of the road where the wheels sank half-way into the mire, and the more the horses pulled, the deeper sank the wheels. So the Wagoner threw down his whip, and knelt down and prayed to Hercules the Strong. 'O Hercules, help me in this my hour of distress." But Hercules appeared to him, and said: 'Man, don't sprawl there. Get up and put your shoulder to the wheel. The gods help them that help themselves." The saying "the gods help those that help themselves" evolved to "God helps those who help themselves" as the phrase was repeated and passed on from culture to culture throughout the centuries. Today Christians often quote the phrase thinking it's biblically based, without realizing that it actually originated from pagan mythology!" (Courtesy of www.vesselofhonour.com) Opposite of Biblical teaching: Jer 17:5 (NIV) This is what the LORD says: "Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who depends on flesh for his strength and whose heart turns away from the LORD." Prov 28:26 (NIV) He who trusts in himself is a fool... terrib |

116 | Such thing as a choice? | Eccl 6:10 | terrib | 153158
Hi Tim, The original question used the phrase "God changes His mind". It might have been better to use the phrase "God changes His plan of action". Either way, I do agree with your outlook as to the Jonah situation. The insert below has some good points to it: Can our prayers cause God to change his mind? (Exodus 32:14) God does not change, but he will adjust his decrees to fit our response. The Bible contains many examples of this — the Hebrews on the outskirts of Canaan (Num. 14:11-23); Hezekiah's repentance on behalf of Israel (2 Chron. 29:3-10, 36); the sparing of Nineveh (Jonah 3:1-10). God's will is dynamic. As with any interpersonal relationship, God's relationship with humanity involves give and take. God accommodates his responses to ours; we adjust our responses to God's. So it can be said on this level, God sometimes changes his mind in response to our prayers. At the same time, God's will is determined. There are decrees and promises he has made that do not change. He kept his covenant with the Israelites (Deut. 7:7-8) and keeps his new covenant with us (John 6:37-40, 44). God wants us to follow his will obediently. He has predetermined ways he would like us to respond, but we have the choice to do them or not (Psalm 143:10; Heb. 10:35-39; 1 Thes. 5:18-18; 2 Peter 3:9). These three aspects of God's will work together. It is not possible for us to understand how, but God is ultimately in control. We might compare the relationship between God, his will and his people to a chess match between a novice player and a master. The novice can make any move he chooses and the master will respond accordingly. But the master will always be in control of the game. The analogy is limited and cannot be pressed further: God's people "win" when the Master's will is done. (Quest Study Bible, page 121. Copyright © Zondervan. Used by permission.) You are right, if everything is scripted then there is no freedom of choice! It is amazing how some like to put God in a box. I think the Pharasees were doing the same thing. The letter, the letter of the law kills. Too much theology can kill the Spirit, for in time it is no longer the Spirit that is teaching, but man. Some only believe what is written. Well, is there anything in the Scriptures that tells us what God is doing today, no, it is not in the Scriptures? Well, if it is not in the Scriptures then today never really happened, give me a break! Did people pray today? Did God answer prayer today? It's not in the Scriptures! Are we living in a vacuum? The Bible teaches us the basics of God, not the end of God! Is everything written in the Scriptures, NO, (John 21:25 KJV) "And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen." Where is mercy if everything is pre-planned? terrib |
