1 | Why five words? | Not Specified | Ray | 1827
Why the choice of the number five in I Corinthians 14:19? "I thank God, I speak in tongues more than you all; however, in the church I desire to speak five words with my mind, that I may instruct others also, rather than ten thousand words in a tongue."
2 | A question of capitalization: small "s"? | Not Specified | Ray | 6042
The NASB enters an alternate capitalization occasioning at the bottom of the page. Consider with me the three "in the Spirit" occurances of Rev 1:10, Rev 4:2, and Rev 21:10. How many of you would make this a small "s"? Also, how about Son of Man in Rev. 1:13?
3 | What verse comes to mind? Fear Him only | Not Specified | Ray | 36100
Deuteronomy 6:13, NASB has only in italics because it is not in the Hebrew. The word "only" certainly expresses the idea of the passage in its context. The NKJ margin option for verse 4 of the same chapter reads, "Hear O Israel: [The Lord is our God, the Lord alone, i.e. the only one]" I was comparing Deuteronly 6:13 with Psalm 96:4 today. "For great is the **Lord, and greatly to be praised; He is to be feared above all gods. For all the gods of the peoples are idols,[Or, non-existent things]..." Also Psalm 95:3, "For the Lord is a great God, And a great **King above all gods,..." Psalm 97:9, "For Thou art the Lord Most High over all the earth; **Thou art exalted far above all gods." Praise God with me as I ask this question. What verse comes to your mind for comparison with these in regard to the Lord only to be served, worshiped, and praised far above all gods? |

4 | What do you say? | Not Specified | Ray | 41338
What do we say to a question that begins with talking about rape and ends with the word suicide? I don't know because that is not my expertise. I only know that the situation can not be ignored and help must be sought from any source dealing with crisis. I think that when one is depressed because of an experience of violence like rape, and feels anger toward God, feeling unloved, helpless, and useless, then one needs to seek professional help outside of the realm of something like this forum. I mean to say that it will require much time and effort outside of this web site. But if one can keep the mind on good things, then he/she can make it through it all. From the heart, Ray |

5 | Overpower her?Does this affect the rock? | Not Specified | Ray | 55610
For the rendering of Matthew 16:18b, I read a version saying that, "the gates of Hades shall not overpower her." This is talking about the church then according to this rendering. If this "her" or the traditional "it" does not refer to the beginning of the verse, that is, the rock or Rock; then I would go with the rock. The rock could be Peter's testimony or Peter himself, but I do not believe right now that it is speaking about the Rock Himself [Deity]. If I would be talked into "Rock", then I would go with the translation or manuscript that does not have "Jesus" in it for verse 20. Matthew 16:20,NASB, "Then He warned *the disciples that they should tell no one that He was * the Christ." Matthew 16:20, NKJ, "Then He commanded His disciples that they should tell no one that He was *Jesus the Christ." The Christ is the Rock or Peter's testimony of the Christ is the rock of the church. 7 | Whose are you? | Not Specified | Ray | 69246
Hi Jeff, I have a question before you put an end to the discussion. I know that you, like Paul, wonder which would be best; to be in heaven or to stay here and witness for your Lord. Whichever is God's will, we are not our own. We are God's possession for Him to do with as He wants; it is not up to us. I was looking at "God's own possesion" today. Whose are you? In who's image are you? Ephesians 1:14, "who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God/'s own possession, to the praise of His glory. For this reason I too, having heard of the faith in the Lord (Jesus) which exists among you, and your love for all the saints, do not cease giving thanks for you, while making mention of you in my prayers;..." 1 Peter 2:9, "But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God/'s own posssession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; for you once were a people, but now you are a people of (God); you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy." Titus 2:11-14, "For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God/ and Savior, Christ (Jesus); who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds." Genesis 1:27, "And God created man in His own image, in the image of God/ He created him; male and female He created them. And (God) blessed them;..." Jeff, I don't accept your (.). 12 | What do you think of this great mystery? | Not Specified | Ray | 79560
In comparing 1 Corinthians 6:17 and Epesians 5:29 tonight I thought about how believers are one spirit with Him and that we are members of His body. What other verses come to your mind in considering this thought of Christ's spiritual body and the church? From the heart, Ray |

13 | How can you no? [I mean know] | Not Specified | Ray | 112053
Tara Bug, How can you know that you can control yourselves? How do you know that you can always say no? How do you know that you can correct a mistake even if it is only for a minute? You can say that you won't have intercorse of course, but that doesn't make it right. |

14 | Song of Solomon: beloved or Beloved? | Not Specified | Ray | 112464
As a counter of pronouns of Deity, I was content with the only one found in Song of Solomon. 8:6, "Put me like a seal over your heart, Like a seal on your arm. For love is as strong as death, Jealousy is as severe as Shol; Its flashes are flames of fire, The very flame of the Lord." My first question concerns J Preston Eby. Does anyone know who he is? He, according to a personal note in my Bible, has also capitalized "He" in Chapter 3:1-4. That makes a total of 12 which I could also go along with as far as my personal study method is concerned; being divisible by three. 2) My main question is an outcome of listening to J Vernon McGee on the radio this morning, as he is studying the Song of Solomon. He is spiritualizing more of the book than I had considered in the past. Spiritualizing to my mind means capitalizing pronouns. 3) My question for this verse involves capitalization and also the number of pronouns for the verse. Here is my interpretation for what it is worth, and I would like to get comments. Song of Solomon 5:9, "What kind of Beloved is your Beloved, O most beautiful of women? What is your Beloved more than another beloved, That thus you adjure us?" From the heart, Ray |

15 | US go... even we, the disciples? | Not Specified | Ray | 121531
See #8339 for reference. 1) Did the disciples follow Jesus and see the resurrection of His friend Lazarus? 2) Would we go, even we THE disciples, if it meant death to follow Him? See also John 18:17, 25. 3) Should we see the Light of the world in this passage? John 11:9 From the heart, Ray |

16 | Do we receive *holy *spirit as a gift? | Not Specified | Ray | 130087
In considering Romans 5:5, in my personal copy I have penciled in a lower case "holy spirit". I do this because I think of the holy spirit as the gift of God which is given to us. I compare the verse with Acts 11:16, "And I remembered the word of the Lord, how He used to say, 'John baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the *holy *spirit'. 17 If God therefore gave to them the same gift as He gave to us..." I would like some comments from the forum members as I continue to consider the gift of "holy spirit". From the heart, Ray |

18 | Stone or stone? Him or it? | Not Specified | Ray | 138889
1 Peter 2:6 quotes Isaiah 28:16, "Therefore thus say the Lord God, 'Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a tested stone, A costly cornerstone for the foundation, firmly placed. He who believes in [it] will not be disturbed.'" The marginal note in the NASB has for the word disturbed [Lit. in a hurry]. The NKJ for the last sentence reads, "...Whoever believes will not act hastily." Question: The Greek for 1 Peter 2:6 has the word "kataischuno", Strong's #2617, from 2596 and 153; to put to shame, to disgrace. Are disbelievers ashamed of "it" or "Him"? Are they disobedient to the "word" or to the "Word"? From the heart, Ray |

Reference #124161. John 3:34, KJ, "For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him."
