121 | To capitalize or not to capitalize? | Bible general Archive 1 | Ray | 1836
Dear JVH, Please be assured that I respect you, and you are not lacking in honor. "But God has so composed the body giving more abundant honor to that member which lacked, so that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another." I also compared Ephesians 4:5,Philippians 2:14,15, and Philippians 1:27 as good references as well as your Philippians verse for me. Only thing is you wouldn't agree with my Phillipians 1:27 capitalization,"standing firm in one Spirit, with one mind (soul) striving together for the faith of the gospel;" Sorry, I couldn't resist.:-) Let me talk about your points. (1) Right from the start, I decided as far as my own personal study was concerned, I would look at no religious literature except the Bible. I do look at several translations and copyrights, however. (2) All the letters in Hebrew are in caps so it is impossible to show Deity that way. That to me shows how very much scripture is to be individual, interpretive, and only as meaningful as each person can make it. In my interlinear Greek copy, Theos is capitalized. It MUST be capitalized to show the honor that He is due. He is the only true God and not a god. Why must they be capitalized today? Simply because the Deity of Christ is so much denied in our world and in our churches. (3) I have written to you about this one on March 17,2001 and tried to express the thought that it would be better sometimes to err on the side of using capitals. Luke 7:19 says, "Summoning two of his disciples, John sent them to the Lord, saying, "Are You the Expected One, or do we look for someone else?" If they expected One why would they look for someone or any one? That's what I wrote then, saying in other words that why would one be chosen over One, why would they when they Expected One, look for some one? (I do not know Hebrew or Greek. I took Spanish in High School, German in college, Latin in college choir, along with French songs. Didn't do very well in the foreign languages to be honest. I hope to learn Greek, however.) The word "one" is a difficult one in Greek as far as my personal study is concerned. For instance in John 1:2 when it says "He was in the beginning with God." it literally means "This One was in the beginning with God." Later, in verse seven talking about John the Baptist, it reads "He came as a witness" when literally it means "This one came as a witness". The Greek has the same word for "one" with no capitalization. It is up to the reader, always has been up to the reader, to decide if its important or not, which one to capitalize, or leave them both lower case. The book of John was written to downplay the importance of John the Baptist, but I'll let you capitalize the title he has had through the years. But I won't count him as Deity. But here again it was necessary for the individual to decide for himself how important John was. (4) In your Bible study, how many times have you read a verse talking about a Spirit as in an angel, and in the margin it will say,"or spirit".??? Question marks, mine. Have you seen "or Spirit."??? Where is the lower case they prefer? (The word Author is another tough one to decide, at least for me. I think I'm still thinking about the "Author of our faith". I'm not writing the Bible, either, but I think we all individually have to interpret it.) Who should decide about capitalization you ask? What are the denominations of the scholars of the past? Who should decide? Yes, I say we all have to decide, because it is important. John l:l literally says,"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and God was the Word." This is God's word and I think we should get to know the Word. |

Dear JVH, Thank you for replying to me for I know that I am not the only one that you are sharing thoughts with. I've been thinking of 1 Cor 4:16 and 1 Cor 14:19 today and also wondered about the correlation between Abraham being the friend of God and Jesus being the son (Son?) of Abraham.
123 | what was Mary's geneology | Bible general Archive 1 | Ray | 1952
Dear Brent Douglas, I read with interest your comment that Luke's genealogy of Jesus could also be logically read as "being only supposedly the son of Joseph but actually the son of Eli". I never thought of that possible interpretation. My favorite version the NASB, says "being, as was supposed, the son (I would say Son) of Joseph" and I would put your "but actually" the Son of God."as the last words of the lineage. I don't believe that Adam was the son of God. Adam had a son, Seth. God had a Son, Jesus. I think it was Timothy in the forum who mentioned Romans 5:12 "through one man sin entered into the world"...v.14 "offense of Adam, who is a type of Him who is to come"...the one Man, Jesus Christ." I was most interested in your "but actually". Later, Ray |

Dear rsrsd, May I make a couple of suggestions of capitalization for use in interpretation? Your reference to Matt 19:17 was worded that only the Father is good. Actually it reads,"There is only One who is good;" And really the "only" isn't in the Greek. Personally, in my copy, I either capitalize "I and the Father are One" or read it "I and My Father are one". Either way it is saying the same thing and it is a great wonder when we understand spiritual things and know the one Spirit, Three in One. |

125 | Bible has 1188 chap's, cntr is Psalm 118 | Bible general Archive 1 | Ray | 2061
Hi, I don't know if that is true or not, but certainly the Psalm has things central to our faith as Christians. For instance verse 22 "The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief corner stone. This is the (Lord's) doing; it is marvelous in our eyes." Compare that also with Matt 21:42 "Jesus said to them, "Did you never read in the Scriptures, 'The stone which the builders rejected, this became the corner stone; this came about from the (Lord) , and it is marvelous in our eyes." I do think that even if it were true, it would be meaningful to believers more than nonbelievers. In other words, it wouldn't be a basic doctrine. I could say that Psalm 118:9 would be central too, KBurgee, "It is better to take refuge in the (Lord) than to trust in princes." Can I get you guys to answer any of my brain-teasers about the five words? Later, Ray |

Dear JVH, I would be very willing to share my study with you, but I just now stopped talking with KBurgee and weblord about a brainteaser and issued more or less a challenge to think about it. Let me give them a chance to answer my challenge and after a good nights sleep I can express some words meaningful and spiritual.
127 | What unmarried sexual acts are sinful? | Bible general Archive 1 | Ray | 2422
Hi, I am Ray, one of the capitalizers, small c. I don't know how I missed that one, except I was looking at the capital S Spirit in the next sentences.:-) Romans is a tough one. Look at Romans 7:6b for instance, "so that we serve in newness of the Spirit and not in oldness of the letter." The footnote says, or spirit. Its hard. Look at 8:23 and 8:15 and then compare 7:6 with 6:4. I think Hebrew is all capital letters. Capitalization is not a matter of inspiration of scripture or the Scriptures, but rather our own individual interpretation of the words or the Word. Welcome, Ray V.H. |

Hi JVH, You expressed some interest a while back in a comparison of scripture. I haven't really been thinking about it, but I want to express myself tonight. O.K? The real comparison is between lCor 4:20 and lCor 14:2. "For the kingdom of God does not consist in words, but in power. What do you desire? Shall I come to you with a rod or with love and a spirit of gentleness?" Compared with, "Pursue love, yet desire earnestly spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. For one who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men, but to God; for no one understands, but in his spirit he speaks mysteries." This study revolves around the word "spirit". Between lCor 4:20 and 6:17 there are five 'spirits'; spirit of gentleness, absent in body but present in spirit, and I with you in spirit, that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord, (and lastly,) But the one who joins himself to the Lord, is one spirit with Him. Between 1Cor 14:2 and 14:18 there are five "spirit" words. "...but in his spirit he speaks mysteries, my spirit prays, I shall pray with the spirit, I shall sing with the spirit, Otherwise if you bless in the spirit only..." It is because of these portions of scriptures that I think it reasonable to know why he chose the number five in verse nineteen, "however, in the church I desire to speak five words with my mind, that I may instruct others also, rather than ten thousand words in a tongue." There are also five 'spiritual' words around lCor 2:13,"which things we also speak, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, combining spiritual thoughts with spiritual words." or interpreting spiritual things to spiritual men.NASB note in margin. Dear JVH, 1Cor 14:26, "What is the outcome then, brethren? When you assemble, (five things)each one has a psalm, has a teaching, has a revelation, has a tongue, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification." Go back to 1 Cor 14:1 and go through verse 26 and you'll be perfectly, completely edified. Later, Ray P.S. There are five "heavenly" words. Have you found them yet? You wouldn't have to look far. |

131 | "is" italicized or not italicized? | Bible general Archive 1 | Ray | 3200
Hi Bud, I think that it is good and in the plan of God that the Greek language can allow for tenses to be inserted as the reader interprets. In other words, this book wasn't the last one written and the reader would possibly have read it "All the Scriptures were inspired..." I encourage you to continue to be that careful to detail so that you can learn as much as you can. Another thing to consider is that some versions have reasons for italics other than the fact that Greek does not include that actual word. That word of encouragement having been said, I would also say that we would be best served to be majoring on the basics of the faith, and we would do well not to be too concerned about things that matter little. |

132 | What is the Holy Spirit? | Bible general Archive 1 | Ray | 4099
Hi Elijah, I too think that you will be very hard pressed to find two scriptures to support your thoughts. However, I find your comparison of scriptures to be well founded. A great comparison (Psalm 104:4 "He makes the winds His messengers,..." and Heb 1:7 "Who makes His angels winds, And His ministers a flame of fire.") I would suggest that you also compare John 3:11 with upper case pronouns where Jesus says, "We speak of what We know". Remember that John 3:8 is speaking of the wind and how it blows and we don't know where it came from and where it's going and that's what the Spirit is like and what we're like. In a posting with JVH I tried to tell him that Jesus said these same words. So I see a wind and a spirit and I see Jesus and the Spirit but not your angels as the Holy Spirit. Keep searching and thinking, and these guys and gals can keep us on track. Later, Ray
133 | What unmarried sexual acts are sinful? | Bible general Archive 1 | Ray | 4231
Dear JVH and forrest, You guys had a great conversation on 4/12 and 4/13 that I just now read. Rest assured that many people will be blessed by it, especially as your future postings with each other will continue to show the love of the Lord that you both have. Now since I'd rather talk about capitalization of scripture rather than unmarried sexual acts any day, that's what this posting is about. Typing mistakes that forrest implies he might make and varying, inconsistent usage of the Written Word aside, I would like to just say what I believe and would get from your discussion. The philosophical bent of the use of capitalization is thought of as a waste of time to you JVH but its use will help in showing that you are both saying the same things in agreement. I believe that there is truth itself and that there is the Truth Himself. I don't think we have to say truth itself (Himself) as forrest did. I believe that it is important to know the bible teaching that will lead to correct doctrine and tradition. We need to know the truth itself. I believe that it is most important to know the Way, the Truth, and the Life, and the "message of this Life." John 8:31 says, "If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the Truth, and the Truth will make you free."...NASB (except for capital T's) "So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed." Compare that with John 14:7, "...from now on you know Him and have seen Him."...and yet you have not come to know Me, Phillip?" I was led to contrast Isaiah 45:4-15 also. Don't be afraid to communicate your differences especially if you do as well as you did here. |

134 | TRINITY | Bible general Archive 1 | Ray | 4264
Hi retxar, I praise God with you for His glorious word. You can praise Him whether you find anyone to agree with you or not. You can even praise Him for the possibility of the truth of your thoughts. I have often thought that many people must be studying the Trinity and I appreciate your courage in expressing a rather "far fetched" idea. Perhaps the idea arose from the fact that your study bible said at Gen 18:3 in the margin, or Lord. That is indeed what made me consider all the pronouns of the angels to see if they were speaking of Deity. Let me tell you why I decided against it. We may be able to think of these passages as a "type" of the Trinity or an example of a trinity, but thats as far as I would go. Why I wouldn't say that these angels are God: 1) Verse two states that Abraham met them and bowed himself to the earth. This may be a common practice in those times, I do not know. But the thing is that this was not an act of worship on his part. 2)Verse 16-21 has the men walking with Abraham and the Lord is talking to them as well as Abraham possibly. Verse 17, And the Lord said, "Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do,..." I will go down now..Then the men turned away from there and went toward Sodom, while Abraham was still standing before the Lord." 3)Chapter 19 and the situation with the two angels and Abraham and the men of Sodom is not one that I can see God getting into. The consideration that you put into thought is important. Keep studying with an open mind. Later, Ray |

135 | TRINITY | Bible general Archive 1 | Ray | 4393
Hi retxar, I'm glad if I helped. It's 11:00 P.M. now for me so keep that in mind as I talk (I did have a nap today, though). Isn't it great that while bible studying we can have a personal talk with God as we try to determine all that is involved in the scriptures! And it's great that we can change our minds as we study for there is always more to discover. Our God is alive and active. I say that it is a personal study for in the reference to Ex 3 and the angel or Angel we have to decide for ourselves. And don't worry about leading anyone astray for it isn't something that is major enough to affect salvation. Another similar situation of angel or Angel is a passage later in Genesis about Jacob wrestling with God and men and that He had seen God face to face. It looks like you're going to cause me to reread Genesis since the new copyright of my NASB. One of the things I will be considering again is whether to capitalize the breath of Life in Genesis 2:7;6:17; or Rev 11:11. But not now. What do you personally think? Later, Ray |

136 | Do the italicized words clarify? | Bible general Archive 1 | Ray | 4630
Hi retxar and koinekid, I read your references and understand what you are saying about Jesus and the Father being One. I also hear koinekid say that words are not always in the Greek but necessary for clarity. There is a certain flow to the scriptures and we don't want to add or subtract to the words per Revelation. And if you have seen the Theomatics.com website that I have recommended considering on this forum, a few Greek letters more or less can give added meaning and depth. Retxar, I compared your references, especially John 8:24 and l8:5 with John 17. Verse 5, "Now, Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was. I have manifested Your name..." and verse ll, "keep them in Your name, (the name)which You have given Me, that they may be one even as We (are)." The parenthesis are the italicized words. When you are looking at the Greek and considering capitalization, you are on your own interpretation. Look at John 9:9 and 17:11 and I pray that we all will recive sight of who Jesus is. But the same Greek words are used in these two passages and translated the same. But one is he who used to sit and beg and the other One is He. Even the God of Exodus 3:13 and 1 Chronicles 5:25 in flesh. Even Immanuel, God with us. Mt.1:23 Even the Prophet who is to come into the world. Jn 6:14. Later, Ray |

137 | Need to find a scripture | Bible general Archive 1 | Ray | 5942
Hi prayon, It seems to me that it should continue, 'like has never been seen or will be seen again'. I can't find it if that is the one. I like Ezekiel 25:17 though. "I will execute great vengeance on them with wrathful rebukes; and they will know that I am the Lord when I lay My vengeance on them."
138 | A question of capitalization: small "s"? | Bible general Archive 1 | Ray | 6048
The NASB enters an alternate capitalization occasioning at the bottom of the page. Consider with me the three "in the Spirit" occurances of Rev 1:10, Rev 4:2, and Rev 21:10. How many of you would make this a small "s"? Also, how about Son of Man in Rev. 1:13?
139 | A question of capitalization: small "s"? | Bible general Archive 1 | Ray | 6059
Hi EdB, Thank you very much for answering. I agree that the capitalized S is not all that wrong. I'm looking for a little more consistency, however from our translators. Another place where there is "in the Spirit" is Ezekiel 37:l although NASB has "by the Spirit of the Lord". I haven't decided on that one yet or verse 14 where it says "And I will put My Spirit within you, and you will come to life,..." A note in the Study Bible says that Spirit could be "breath" within you: I'll be comparing it with my possible "breath of Life" at Gen 2:7. Anyway, Ezekiel 36:26,27 show us that both cases could be used correctly, or at least that it is not all "cut and dried," so to speak. Verse 26 says "put a new spirit within you" and verse 26, "And I will put My Spirit within you,..." According to my "Phrase Concordance of the Bible" by Nelson publishers, there are twenty four "IN THE SPIRIT" phrases. What are your thoughts on four more? Mt 22:43, Acts 19:21, 1Peter 4:6, or Acts 21:4 "through the Spirit"? Thanks again. In regard to the Son of Man and who it may be a direct reference to may I suggest the study of Daniel 3:25 in the NASB and the NKJ. Later, Ray |
||||||
140 | A question of capitalization: small "s"? | Bible general Archive 1 | Ray | 6100
Hi EdB, I'll be interested in what other people might be choosing for I think that these are valid considerations. I agree also with NKJ in the Daniel and the furnace episode. The figure in the furnace appeared like the Son of God and the men put their faith in their God who had sent His angel. I left out one "in the Spirit" phrases from Revelation. I would put the three that we have considered in lower case along with Rev 4:2. For consistency I would also put Matthew 22:43 as "Then how does David in the spirit call Him Lord,"... But if you know me at all you know that I would capitalize the three words of "Son" in that passage. In Acts 21:4, I chose the small "s" when I compared it with Acts 20:22,23 "And now, bound in spirit, I am on my way to Jerusalem,..." And just the fact that the will of the Lord, Acts 21:14, was to be done and Paul did go to Jerusalem (and to Rome), shows that it wasn't the Spirit telling Paul through them. Again, thank you EdB. I'm glad for the discussion if only to reinforce the truth that Jesus is the Son of God and the Son of Man. |
