1 | Whose glory is being sought? | 1 Sam 4:3 | Mommapbs | 242868
Ed, the reason this strikes a chord with me is because I have a dear friend who is angry and disappointed with/in God. Her daughter has suffered a great loss and my friend believes that God has treated her unfairly because her daughter has served Him faithfully over the years. We forget that our system of "justice" is often not God's! This misunderstanding may also contribute to bargaining with God too. I suspect we do this because we are blind to the other god we most often worship - self.
2 | What is "that which is within"? | Luke 11:41 | Mommapbs | 241356
Ed, Yes, of course one anyone can emulate the example set by Christ, but without His indwelling presence, that "righteousness" is as you have described - filthy rags. I think we are getting to the same conclusion. We reflect the One/one we worship in what we do.
3 | What is "that which is within"? | Luke 11:41 | Mommapbs | 241354
Inward righteousness - is this of ourselves? Since this was observed by Jesus to the lawyers, isn't He really saying that it is impossible to be charitable because no one has inner righteousness? The law justifies no one. How then do we apply this to ourselves other than to recognize that we too must depend upon the righteousness of Christ within to be truly charitable.
4 | What do you seek? | John 1:38 | Mommapbs | 232040
Just an observation to share on this poignant question, "What do you seek?" As a follower of Jesus, what would your answer be to His question? Jesus already knows the desire(s) of our hearts. He knows we have needs, but the need He wants us to recognize is often overlooked. Jesus gives us instructions in Matthew 6:33 - seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. When we seek His Kingdom, we recognize His sovereignty; Jesus IS King. When we seek His righteousness, we recognize none of our own. We are dependent upon His grace. Do our hearts cry, "not my will but Thy will O LORD?" How often do we come to God looking for what is IN His hand, rather than just His hand? When we truly "delight in the LORD," He will indeed give us "the desires of our hearts." (Psalm 37:4)Those desires will be HIS desires and as a result, we will seek His Kingdom and His righteousness FIRST. May we go about our day remembering that apart from Jesus, we can do nothing. (John 15:5) |

5 | Did God give grace to Nineveh? | Jon 4:11 | Mommapbs | 228168
I see this Doc. IF Jonah is all about God's grace, did everyone - the sailors, the people of Nineveh and Jonah all receive God's grace? This seems a bit "universalist" to me - I'd appreciate your insight. In Christ's love, trish |

6 | Did God give grace to Nineveh? | Jon 4:11 | Mommapbs | 228166
Hi Doc - thank you for thinking of me. I remain cancer free but not always "free of cancer." It's like sin. Praise God. He has freed me from the power and penalty of sin, but it still has the ability to influence me. For the last two and a half years I have been facilitating a cancer support group where Christ is the real "big C!" Thinking about Jonah - I am wondering if we are seeing God’s mercy here instead of grace. When I think of God’s Grace, I understand it to be His unmerited favor in forgiving my sin and imputing His righteousness to me; thus, I am saved from His wrath against sin. We are saved by Grace through faith but I am struggling to see my understanding of God's grace in Jonah. Nineveh was spared destruction because they responded to Jonah’s call to repent. Then the people of Nineveh believed in God; and they called a fast and put on sackcloth from the greatest to the least of them. Jonah 3:5 My question is which god did the Ninevites believe? Did they really believe in Jonah’s God or in their god – which I think was called Dagon. Dagon was half man –half fish, just like Jonah would have appeared when he was vomited out of the mouth of the fish! He probably smelled fishy too. With this cultural backdrop, imagine the authority he might be accorded here. The reason I question this is because earlier in the text we read that the sailors cried to their god and appealed to Jonah to call on his god.(Jonah 1:5,6) From this, it appears that they were not the same. Also, it is noteworthy that elohim is used to reference both GOD and god. When God saw their deeds, that they turned from their wicked way, then God relented concerning the calamity which He had declared He would bring upon them. And He did not do it. Jonah 3:10 Next we read that Jonah was angry about this. Might this be because the people did not recognize the LORD’s hand but attributed the blessing to their god Dagon? (I know speculation, but it does make some sense to me.) I get a bit indignant when people take credit where credit is not due too! Of course this challenges my understanding of God’s grace. So I am wondering, is this perhaps mercy (not getting what they deserved) rather than grace (getting what they don't deserve)? Just as the sailors (their lives were spared) and the Ninevites (their city was not destroyed) reaped the consequences of Jonah’s obedience, we reap the blessing of the obedience of Jesus. I am reminded of Jesus’ prayer on the cross, “Father forgive them, for they know not what they do.” Perhaps Jonah instructs us to be more generous with God’s grace – it belongs to Him anyway! Blessings to you Doc! trish |

7 | Stones of Fire? | Ezek 28:14 | Mommapbs | 222368
Thanks Doc - I appreciate your insight. Thank you also for your concern. I am happy to say that I am marking 3 years in remission. Although I am cancer free - at times I am not free of cancer. But God is patient with me, teaching me about His faithfulness - How thankful I am that His is not dependent upon mine! God is so good to me. Oh how He loves us. Blessings to you and yours! momma |

8 | Stones of Fire? | Ezek 28:14 | Mommapbs | 222356
Thanks Doc - both man and angels are created beings and both have volition, Angels dwelt in the immediate presence of God; man was visited by God. Both sinned yet only man is redeemable. Does this reference have any bearing on why the angelic realm is not? What are your thoughts? Thanks, In Him, momma |

9 | Items of identity? | Gen 38:18 | Mommapbs | 220812
Greetings Doc - Don't you find is interesting that Judah would leave items of such value as a pledge for the mere animal he promised? Men! He sure got more than he bargined for didn't he? From this sinful encounter the Son of Man would one day be born. How great is our God! Indeed, He works all things together for good. Blessings to you - mommapbs |

Thank you Brad - the concept of authority is of interest to me as I am studying John 6:27. God set His seal on Jesus. Identity, Authority - good to contemplate on here. I'm focusing on the works of God v 29. Leapfrog over to chapter 9: 35-38 and see the work of God in the life of the man born blind. Lord, I believe; help my unbelief comes to mind here too. Thanks! Blessings, mommapbs |

11 | Sin causes sickness | John 5:14 | Mommapbs | 220231
Thanks for the heads up here. If it doesn't line up with God's Word . . . out it goes. I am so thankful for God's Spirit and His ability to guide and direct me into all Truth. So far, what I have read has not contradicted what I see in Scripture, but then I'm not too far along. None of the things I read on that site you gave me were in anything I have read so far. I appreciate this. Thanks again! God bless you too! momma |

12 | Sin causes sickness | John 5:14 | Mommapbs | 220219
Amen, Amen! Jesus' message is the same today: Repent - change the way you think and act! Right now I am doing a study on the mind. God commands us to be self-controlled, part of this is that we are to be in control of what we THINK! Instead of "I think, therefore I am.", I suggest that we consider I AM, therefore I think! For years, Proverbs 23:7 has reverberated within my soul. "For as he thinks within himself, so he is." Also, "Watch over your heart with all diligence,For from it flow the springs of life. Proverbs 4:23. "The steadfast of mind You will keep in perfect peace, because he trusts in You" Isaiah 26:3. Lastly, Philippians 4:7 - "the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." What a treasure God's Word is for us! I'm using Watchman Nee's "The Spiritual Man" as a resource. This is a humbling text. Blessings to you and yours Doc! momma |

13 | Sin causes sickness | John 5:14 | Mommapbs | 220189
Greetings Doc! Many blessings to you and yours in 2010. I am contemplating this verse. Jesus' command to "stop sinning" would indicate that the man was sinning. What sin can we see in this passage? Could it be that he failed to give glory to God for his healing? It is interesting to note that the Pharisees were more concerned that the man was carrying a burden - his mat - than the fact that he had been healed (of a bigger burden!) - any input here? As believers, we have the resident Spirit of God to enable us to choose not to sin, but when we fail to do this, what is the "something worse" that Jesus suggests will happen to us? Might it be the enabling the foundation of a stronghold to be built? In Christ's love, mommapbs |

14 | Truth apart from wisdom? | Ps 51:6 | Mommapbs | 217545
Hi Doc - so glad to read your response as well as other "old timers" here on the Forum. I appreciate the insight and references that you all provide as I prepare a message for some suffering folks. God has me where He wants me, so I am doing well! Our oldest son has a wife and baby, no income, will have no home as of September, no money (lost it all on a failed court case) and now he has had his car stolen. Today he told me, God owns it all, even the car, so He can do as He wants with my life. Suffering is good. Phil 1:29. It will be exciting to watch God move here. I am encouraged by his steadfast faith in God to provide; hope that I have modeled this for him too! Blessings, and thanks again for your response! mommapbs |

16 | Boasting in the Name? | Ps 20:7 | Mommapbs | 217535
Greetings! Thank you so much for these references! Also, for expanding my other post. These are some scriptures that I want to use as I develop a message for a cancer support group that I am part of at my church. Our mission is to focus on the REAL big "C" - Christ! Some may be cancer free, but many are not free of cancer. This diagnosis can become a prison of fear and doubt or it can become an opportunity for obedience as we learn to choose to trust God. It can even become a privilege. - See John Piper's "Don't Waste Your Cancer" - For to you it has been granted for Christ's sake, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake. Phil 1:29 We who have been chosen to suffer for Jesus' Name enter into an arena as a witness to/of the power of God - trusting Him for the outcome. For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us. Romans 8:18 For momentary, light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison, while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal. 2 Cor 4:17-18 Blessings to you! mommapbs |

18 | Truth apart from wisdom? | Ps 51:6 | Mommapbs | 217528
Greetings Vintage68 - Pilate asked "What is truth?" (John 18:38) yet he was staring Truth (John 14:6) in the face. As I ponder this verse, I believe that David is painfully aware of his sinful condition and need for repentance. Truth can not commune with unrighteousness. Repentance comes first. God is Truth and wisdom comes from God. We are warned not to be "wise in our own eyes." Proverbs 3:7. Truth reveals and the wisdom of God instructs what to do with it. Jesus said, "Apart from Me, you can do nothing." John 15:5. I think David understood this. My thoughts. Blessings, mommapbs |

19 | Do we understand suffering in delighting | Ps 37:4 | Mommapbs | 215841
Greetings Vintage68 - you asked, Does God truly give us the bitter cup, for His glory? We do not drink the cup given to Jesus - amazing grace. But I believe that God does give us what seems to be a bitter cup for His glory. Eze 36:26 declares that God acts , not for our sake, but for the sake of His Holy Name. For His glory. C.S. Lewis reminds us to put first things first - seek His Kingdom, His righteousness; seek His face - we learn to desire what He desires first. We cannot do this apart from His spirit - surrender and abiding are the key factors here - choosing to trust God, to praise Him, to delight in Him, no matter what circumstance we find ourselves to be in. The bitter cup becomes sweet in His presence. It remains bitter if we fail to recognize that it is HIS cup that frees us first. Larry Crabb writes: When we live with no higher goal than to make this life work, whether through therapy, accountability, post-modern freedom, evangelical Christianity, or Catholic spirituality, we fight the wrong battle. And that’s the battle most of modern church is fighting! We’ve lost our unique message, the bright colors of radical Christianity have gone beige, we offer merely a religious method for pursuing the same goal that godless culture esteems. We chase after second things, believing the lie that the blessings of God (second things) will feed our souls when the truth is that only His presence (the first thing) can do the job. Blessings on your day! mommapbs |

20 | Do we understand suffering in delighting | Ps 37:4 | Mommapbs | 215840
Greetings Keliy - thank you for your words. I know that I can always find much to ponder about the deep things of God here as He is at work among you. Your name vessel is so wonderful - we have this treasure in jars of clay. Sometimes I think we see ourselves as broken - but we as the LORD sees us, we are complete in Him. There is a great line in one of Keith Getty's songs that says, "Let the treasure of the trial form within me as I go." We are each a mould, fashioned by God for His purposes.(Eph 2:10) What He allows to be poured into our lives is part of that process. We hinder His work when we refuse to surrender to His presence - which is so ridiculous as we contemplate the LORD, His love, majesty, mercy, grace, kindness, compassion I could go on and on - who wouldn't want One such as He to be in control!? And yet, if we continue to focus on self, on the trial rather than the treasure we suffer inefficiently. As I contemplate the recent tragedies that I have been surrounded with in recent days, I can only cry out to the LORD to comfort those who are bearing a tremendous load. Praying for others is a way we share one another's burdens. No suffering is "undeserved." God uses suffering to teach us to draw close to Him. The choice is ours; too may flee away in bitterness and anger, I pray for them to be encouraged to turn around and seek His face. What can separate us from the love of God? I am learning what it means to share in the fellowship of His sufferings. The Lord knows what we are going through; He has a purpose - for our good. I suspect that He is grieved when we don't trust Him enough to persevere under trial, to stand firm until the end. Here is where we need one another, to come along side, to pray for and encourage. This is the Body in action. I am learning to be more senstive to this calling. Blessings to you. mommapbs |
