However, it does say (Mat 27:46) that when he was on the sross, Jesus cried, "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?" that is to say, "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" Paul tells us (2 Corinthians 5:21) that God had made him to be sin for us. We understand that God is holy and thus (Heb 7:26) separate from sinners. We know that sin separates between us and God, and our sins hide his face from us (Isa 59:2). We put these facts together and we think that God did turn his back on Jesus when (1 Pet 2:24) he bore our sins in his body on the tree. |

Aixen7z4 First God and Jesus are One how does One separate Himself from the other. When we are deepest in sin does God turn from us or does He reach out to us in Love saying take M y Hand? Jesus said He would never leave us nor forsake us yet when Jesus needed Him most we suppose God left him. What Jesus said was a quote from the beginning of Psalm 22. Psalm 22 is a vivid description of the crucifixion that Jesus was presently experiencing. By Jesus quoting this well known scripture to the crowd He was once more testifying of His love, and His desire for them to know the truth that he was in fact the Messiah. When the psalmist wrote Psalm 22 he was crying out from his personal predicament, his cry my God my God why did you forsake me. Had God forsaken the psalmist? Absolutely not, again the assurance God would never leave us nor forsake us. However in his sorrow it seemed that way to Psalmist therefore Jesus knowing that God hadn't forsaken the psalmist certainly wouldn't have quoted something like that had God really left Him. I believe the idea that is commonly taught in the church that God had turned His back on Jesus was because of the quote Jesus made and people not realizing it was the beginning lines of Psalm 22 which speaks of the crucifixion. Not making this connection they tried to explain by human reasoning that Jesus was in sin so God had to turn His back on Him, that is a concept not found anywhere in the Bible. Also while Jesus carried the sins of the world he wasn’t a sinner Jesus was still the perfect lamb of God the propitiation of our sins, He took on our sins He didn’t defile Himself by committing our sins. Lastly we see in the Bible that God talks to Satan and Satan is the epitome of sin, If God has to turn from sin then why not from Satan himself? Once again while we were still in sin God reached out to us. There is no Scripture basis to say God forsook Christ once we have proper understanding of what Jesus meant when He said My God My God why have you forsaken me. EdB |

Concerning the question whether God turned his back on Jesus on the cross, no more can be said than what I have said. The idea is not based on human reasoning but comes when one combines the scriptures cited. Your answer is reasonable. It may be true that God did never turn his back on him. However, we may not base this on the idea that God never turns his back on us. I will tell you that he does do that, even if only momentarily. His presence does not leave us, but he sometimes turns his face. "For the LORD hath called thee as a woman forsaken and grieved in spirit, and a wife of youth, when thou wast refused, saith thy God. For a small moment have I forsaken thee; but with great mercies will I gather thee. In a little wrath I hid my face from thee for a moment; but with everlasting kindness will I have mercy on thee, saith the LORD thy Redeemer" (Isaiah 54). |

Aixen7z4 I appreciate your position but it is not more Biblically grounded than mine. I can supply scripture all day where Jesus says He and the Father are One, that there is but One God, that the God head is one made up of Father Son and Holy Spirit. To separate one from the other we would have to understand the Godhead was divided and nothing in scripture suggests that. In fact Jesus said if you have seen me you have seen the father. You gave some verses where the writer was using hyperbola by saying You (God) turned Your face from sin. However since God spirit and is omnipresent, all seeing and all knowing He really doesn’t have a face nor back for that matter. So we have to realize these were figure of speech rather than actual reactions of God. If we look at the story of Isaac and Abraham at Mt. Moriah Genesis 22 we see a shadow of the crucifixion. There is a remarkable amount of "types" here. Abraham traveled three day to sacrifice Isaac and we know in Eastern Culture during that time Abraham consider Isaac already dead to him. They went along leaving their servants behind, while Jesus was on the cross the earth was thrown into darkness. Isaac carried the wood for his sacrifice, Jesus carried his cross. Isaac in obedience allowed his father to bind him and prepare him for sacrifice, Isaac was between 12 and 27 and Abraham was around 112 – 127 (Isaac allowed) just as Jesus allowed Himself to be placed upon the cross. Abraham said God would provide a Lamb however in verse 13 we see a ram instead was substituted, it wasn’t until nearly 2000 years later that God provided the Lamb. I say in all of this to say, no where in this beautiful picture of love and obedience do we see Abraham turning away from his son even as he was ready to thrust the knife in to take his very life. If God turned away from Jesus on the cross then in effect by Biblical definition Jesus was Spiritually dead. If God is Spirit and Jesus and God are one then one would have to conclude God was dead. Somehow that doesn’t work for me. So as I said while I see your position and appreciate it, it is certainly not biblically stronger than my position, and in many case it contains serious weaknesses which mine does not. EdB |

Your points are very well taken. These are some of the deep things of God that call forth wonder and praise. ’Tis mystery all: th’Immortal dies: Who can explore His strange design? In vain the firstborn seraph tries To sound the depths of love divine. ’Tis mercy all! Let earth adore, Let angel minds inquire no more. |
