1 | Is belief in the bible needed to be save | NT general Archive 1 | hetfield | 160829 | ||
It is my opinion that the new testament in accurate, useful and reliable but not "the word of God". It seems that 2 timothy 3:16 is not refering to the new testament. It had not yet been compiled. It is my opinion that the word of God is Christ and the gospel as in (2 corinthians 2:17,4:2, john 1:1, 1:14) I think the belief that the bible is the word of god is a stumbling block for some people to come to Christ. Do we need to believe the bible is the word of God for salvation? Then why do we Christians seem to hold on to this belief? Why do we need to believe the bible is the word of God in order to become a member of a church? Are there any Christian groups or demominations that have my view? I would greatly appreciate your opinion on this subject. |

Is the Bible truly God's Word? ____________________ "If the Bible is the Word of God then to dismiss it is to dismiss God Himself." ____________________ 'Our answer to this question will not only determine how we view the Bible and its importance to our lives, but also it will ultimately have an eternal impact on us. If the Bible is truly God’s Word, then we should cherish it, study it, obey it, and ultimately trust it. If the Bible is the Word of God then to dismiss it is to dismiss God Himself. 'The fact that God gave us the Bible is an evidence and illustration of His love for us. The term "revelation" simply means that God communicated to mankind what He is like and how we can have a right relationship with Him. These are things that we could not have known had not God divinely revealed them to us in the Bible. Although God’s revelation of Himself in the Bible was given progressively over approximately 1500 years, it has always contained everything that man needed to know about God in order to have a right relationship with Him. If the Bible is truly the Word of God, then it is the final authority for all matters of faith, religious practice, and morals. 'There can be no doubt about the fact that the Bible does claim to be the very Word of God. This is clearly seen in verses like 2 Timothy 3:15-17, which say, “. . .from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 'In order to answer these questions we must look at both the internal and external evidences that the Bible is truly God’s Word. The internal evidences are those things internal to the Bible itself that testify of its divine origin... 'Another of the internal evidences that indicate the Bible is truly God’s Word is seen in the detailed prophecies contained within its pages. The Bible contains hundreds of detailed prophecies relating to the future of individual nations including Israel, to the future of certain cities, to the future of mankind, and to the coming of one who would be the Messiah, the Savior of not only Israel, but all who would believe in Him. Unlike the prophecies found in other religious books or those done by Nostradamus, the biblical prophecies are extremely detailed and have never failed to come true. There are over three hundred prophecies concerning Jesus Christ in the Old Testament alone. Not only was it foretold where He would be born and what family He would come from, but also how He would die and that He would rise again on the third day. There simply is no logical way to explain the fulfilled prophecies in the Bible other than by divine origin. There is no other religious book with the extent or type of predictive prophecy that the Bible has. 'A third internal evidence of the divine origin of the Bible is seen in its unique authority and power... 'Besides the internal evidence that the Bible is truly God’s Word there are also external evidences that indicate the Bible is truly the Word of God. One of those evidences is the historicity of the Bible... 'Another external evidence that the Bible is truly God’s Word is the integrity of the human authors... 'A final external evidence that the Bible is truly God’s Word is the indestructibility of the Bible... 'Throughout time, skeptics have regarded the Bible as mythological, but archeology has established it as historical. Opponents have attacked its teaching as primitive and outdated, but its moral and legal concepts and teachings have had a positive influence on societies and cultures throughout the world. It continues to be attacked by science, psychology, and political movements and yet remains just as true and relevant today as it was when it was first written. It is a book that has transformed countless lives and cultures throughout the last 2000 years. No matter how its opponents try to attack, destroy, or discredit it, the Bible remains just as strong, just as true, and just as relevant after the attacks as it was before. The accuracy which has been preserved despite every attempt to corrupt, attack, or destroy it, is clear testimony to the fact that the Bible is truly God’s Word. It should not surprise us that no matter how the Bible is attacked, it always comes out unchanged and unscathed. After all, Jesus said, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away” (Mark 13:31). After looking at the evidence one can say without a doubt that “Yes the Bible is truly God’s Word.”' Recommended Resource: Scripture Alone by James White ____________________ To read more go to: www.gotquestions.org/Bible-God-Word.html |

1. Your first point, 2 timothy is refering to the old testament. The new testament had not yet been compiled. 2. Your second point proves accuracy, not The actually literal "word of god". 3. Your third point? 4. Integrity of "human authors"? Exactly. This again prove reliability and accuracy, not the actual literal "word of god" 5. "Indestructibility in the bible". The bible has not transformed countless of lives. Christ the creator and savior has change countess lives. Reliable? yes. Accurate? yes. Usefull? yes. "word of God"? no If you believe the bible to be the "word of god" then why does it say that Jesus is the "word of God"? And by the power of the spirit writes his words on our hearts. Jesus is the "word of God" written on all believers hearts. Saying the bible has saved us is like saying to the person who witnessed to us saved us. It is not the messenger (i.e. the bible) it is Jesus Thanks for your response |

Hi hetfield, Maybe the distinction is being overemphasized? I for one do not say that Jesus is not the living Word of God- because He is! (John. 1:1, 14) "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth." Futher, Jesus says that His Word is Truth- John 17:17, "Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth." I'm sure we're agreed on this point. However, the writer of Hebrews declares, in 4:12, that "For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow..." Certainly you'd agree that this refers to the written Word? We also know that "So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ" (Rom. 10:17), a clear reference to the life-changing power of the written Word of God! Do you deny that the written Word has any life-changing power, or that it cannot change lives? It is the very Word of God, is it not? Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |
