Christmas-Is It Christian? *** If Christmas were important for Christians, would not Jesus or his disciples have mentioned it? Also, the Bible tells us: "All Scripture is inspired of God and beneficial . . . that the man of God may be fully competent, completely equipped for every good work." (2 Timothy 3:16, 17) If Christmas were of divine origin, would not God have inspired the Bible writers to say something about it so that Christians could be "completely equipped for every good work"? The Bible ignores Christmas because it is not a Christian doctrine or practice. It is not of divine origin. As the Sri Lankan Daily News observed: "It is quite significant to note that nowhere in the New Testament was a special day called Christmas set apart to celebrate the birth of Christ. . . . Christmas is of human origin. Christmas is not a part of the Bible." Jesus Not Born on December 25 Regarding the date December 25 given for the birth of Jesus, there is no evidence to indicate that this is correct. The evidence shows otherwise. |

Tess, are you forgetting “our” calendar was changed? Is that the reason you feel Jesus wasn't born in "December"? John, Jesus' cousin was conceived shortly after Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement), which is on the tenth day of Tishre (our Sept- Oct.). So John would have born in Tummuz (June-July), and Jesus was born about six months later. Luke’s CHRISTMAS story spells out all the fine details. I don't believe for one second these "dates" are in Scripture just to fill Bible pages. You can - IF you honestly don't desire to acknowledge the Almighty hand of a God in full control of this universe The Jewish month Kislev corresponds with "our" Nov-Dec. It is their ninth month. Read Haggai 2:18f and discover for yourself what it says about the 24th of Kislev (sometimes spelled Chislev) (our Dec) about the foundation of the Lord's temple being laid. The Jews have continued to celebrate this activity for centuries, long BEFORE any Druids thought up any holiday for Dec. 24-25. Cross reference that to 1 Cor. 3:11 where it spells out WHO is the “temple’s” foundation - Jesus Christ. And His people are His temple. By the way - HAPPY HANUKKAH! Today is the day Jews begin their eight days celebration with their "Feasts of Dedication". They remember the miracle of not running out of oil. Around the world, the candles being lit will be accompanied by blessings and chanting the hymn rock of ages, (Maoz Tzur). Jesus Christ is MY Rock of Ages. Blessings, Taleb |

3 | Was there herding on/about December? | NT general Archive 1 | JCrichton | 106853
Hello, Taleb! I just logged on again (was on my way out when I read your post). I do not usually get involved with the dates (was Jesus born 6 BC or 6 AD, etc.) but I found your post most interesting. There has been a counsel about the shepherds being out on our Lord's birht day and some suggest that sheep hearding was not done in late December... Can you clarify this for me? I do not care to prove or disprove them, I'm just curious because you placed the Jewish calander with the Nov-Dec period of our present-day calander. Thansk for the info! Merry Christmas and God Bless! |

There is no evidence that Jesus was born on December 25th. We don't way day of the year He was born. Therefore, the question of whether shepherds would be herding in late December is mostly moot.

Taleb, hi! You are missing my point. Your previous example sets the date to Nov-Dec; I have always thought that it could be possible to get at least close approximation to Christ's birth date. But there are too many conflicting thoughts in the matter, so I gave it up. Your post perked up my interest. So I wondered what the climate would've been in that region around Jesus' birth. I thought perhaps you had some info on it. I still believe that a Dec date could be possible because we have experienced many mild Winters (Eastern region) in the US, and I conclude that it could have been such an experience for the shepherds and their herds! God Bless! |
