Greetings New Creature! The 'Theological Dictionary of the New Testament', by Gerhard Kittel is a 10 volume Greek dictionary, and proably the most difinitive work around. Here is what it says about 'photizo' in Heb. 6:4: ************************************ 1. Hebrews. Hb. uses the verb 'photizo' twice of Christians, the reference being to the beginning of the Christian life, 6:4; 10:32. Baptism is in view. But the use of the verb is not developed and there is no fixed baptismal terminology. Illumination takes place at baptism, but the verb does not denote this technically; it simply refers to the process of illumination as such. Volume 9, page 355. ************************************ I agree with his position. I think that baptism may have been in mind as well, but the thought was not fully developed, so probably should not be pushed to far. But, Emmaus is correct that baptism was probably at least partially in view here. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Tim I find that interesting. So from that can we assume that many from the early church believed in baptismal regeneration? If thats the case I will have to disagree with those who maintain that view In His service New Creature |

Greetings New Creature! I haven't read a whole lot on the early church's beliefs about baptism, but even if 'photizo' is referring to baptism, it doesn't mean that this verse is teaching baptismal regeneration. Emmaus and I do differ in our understanding of baptism, I just wanted to let you know that there is some historical evidence that 'photizo' can refer to baptism. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Tim I appreciate your help I have been reading many past articles you have posted in here concerning various topics. I am learning so much, and you always have a knack (or should I say, a teaching gift from God's Spirit) for not complicating the word of God, while at the same time providing depth and insight. I especially enjoy your comments on topics such as the atonement, various info you provided concerning Greek Grammar, and especially how you hold firm to the fact that "all" "world" "everyone" etc. mean exactly that, not something else. Oh by the way, I also downloaded and listened to your message; "Because He Wept" from your church web site. Excellent Thanks again New Creature |

Greetings New Creature! Thanks for the kind words! I have really enjoyed meeting so many new friends on this forum. This forum gives us the opportunity to help one another, challenge one another, and get to know one another. Even if we don't always agree, we stand firm in one faith. I'm glad you enjoyed the sermon. Our pastor was called away to the hospital for an emergancy involving a new baby in our congregation, so I only had about 12 hours notice that I needed to fill in for him. :-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
