1 | Does Heb 6 support "always saved"? | Bible general Archive 1 | Emmaus | 90039
New Creture, If you can't don't. I can and do. Christ is the light of the world and yes He is spiritual enlightenment, but we obviously have a different understanding of the sacrament of baptism. And obviously early Christians understood it similarly to me as you will find by cehcking out the reference I gave. It may be extra biblical but it does shed light on how the early Christians understood baptism. Emmaus |

Emmaus Since when is extra-Bibical reference material suppose to be our final standard for truth, especially when it flys in the face of what is plainly taught in God's innerant word? once again concerning the word "enlightened" found in Heb. 6:4 Enlighten: 1 Strong's Number: 5461 Greek: photizo from phos, "light," (a), used intransitively, signifies "to give light, shine," Rev 22:5; (b), used transitively, "to enlighten, illumine," is rendered "enlighten" in Eph 1:18, metaphorically of spiritual "englightenment;" so Jhn 1:9, i.e., "lighting every man" (by reason of His coming); Eph 3:9, "to make (all men) see" (RV marg., "to bring to light"); Hbr 6:4, "were enlightened;" Hbr 10:32, RV, "enlightened," AV, "illuminated." See ILLUMINATED, LIGHT. Cp. photismos, "light," and photeinos, "full of light." Vine's Expository Dictionary Of New Testament Words baptism is not given as a definition for the meaning of "enlightened" In His service New Creature |

New Creature, Most of us would agree that secular historical records of the beliefs and practices of the church through the ages do not and should not trump Scripture as our final authority, but they can be helpful to us in understanding historical Christianity. Such was the intent, I believe, of our long-time friend and forum member Emmaus when he suggested these resources to you. --Hank
4 | Does Heb 6 support "always saved"? | Bible general Archive 1 | New Creature | 90077
Hank I don't doubt the resources Emmaus provided. The problem I have is when someone implys that it is possible to become spiritually enlightened through baptism. It's the same problem I have with others who believe in baptismal regeneration Thanks Hank New Creature |

Well, you have no argument with ME on your position on baptismal regeneration. I believe the Scriptures teach both regeneration and baptism but not baptismal regeneration. Baptists (and that's what I am) believe that baptism comes after regeneration -- we call it believer's baptism -- but has no power to regenerate. And here, of course, water baptism (immersion) is meant. ..... But we do not play down the extreme importance of obeying the Lord's command to be baptized. It is unthinkable that anyone who confesses Jesus as Lord and Savior would not follow Him in obedience to His command to be baptized. --Hank
