The older I get (and I do get older) and the more I read the various versions of the Bible, the more convinced I become that the best version is the one that speaks best to you -- that you enjoy, feel comfortable using, and can understand, The only caveat I would offer is that it should not be a free paraphrase but a true translation, one that manages to strike a proper balance between being as transparent as possible to the Hebrew and Greek manuscripts while at the same time rendering God's message in standard, contemporary English. If I had to name a translation or two that would meet these criteria, I'd be forced to name the NASB and NKJV as qualified candidates. Some of the newer versions, e.g., English Standard and Holman Christian Standard may well be on their way to earning their place among this august group also, but they need a bit more time yet in order for their ink to dry more thoroughly. --Hank | ||||||

Hank: You write: "Some of the newer versions, e.g., English Standard and Holman Christian Standard may well be on their way to earning their place among this august group also, but they need a bit more time yet in order for their ink to dry more thoroughly." How true. It takes time for even the best of new translations to catch on in sales and popularity. For the first five or more years after its publication, the NIV was still virtually unknown here in the rural Midwest. I've not had the privilege of acquiring a copy of the English Standard Version, although I have been very pleased with the samples of it that I've seen. I agree with you re the Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB). I have owned and enjoyed the HCSB NT since last summer. It could easily become my main Bible. I like EVERYTHING about it -- the wording of the text, the clarity and accuracy, the font style of the type, the page layout which includes headings and subheadings throughout the text, format, and excellent translators' notes. The text is accurate enough to be used in word studies, yet it is also clear enough to use in evangelization (witnessing). Hank, I know you already have a copy of the HCSB. For those of you who don't, "Try it; you'll like it." You may sample the HCSB NT by going to: www.broadmanholman.com/hcsb/default.asp There you will find the complete text of the NT available online for FREE. kalos |
