Is it a sin to file bankruptcy? No it is not! However it is a sin to break the promise to repay people what you owe. It is also a sin to cheat them out of their money. Bankruptcy was designed to help someone, that through situations beyond their control, got themselves into a nearly impossible financial situation, the opportunity to get out of debit and reestablish themselves. It has become a scam to buy now and avoid paying. I think a Christian can file Bankruptcy, but they are still obligated by their word, Christian ethics, and moral law to repay their debt. No matter what the court says, Christians still owe that debt. And if you follow Christ’s commandment to ‘do unto others as you would have them do unto you’, they understand they must somehow make every effort to repay their debt. One other thing no one tells you is the stigma of Bankruptcy follows you all your life. In nearly every transaction you will be asked if you have ever filed bankruptcy. You will always have that hanging over you. I think many people instead of looking to bankruptcy needs to look to Christian financial groups that can help them establish repay plans that will allow them to honor their word and God, while still preserving what they have and need to live.
