It is reassuring to know that faith is still "a" factor in salvation. "Salvation is conditioned solely on faith in Jesus Christ. Nearly 200 times faith, or belief, is stated as the single condition in the NT [for salvation]" (p. 1882, Ryrie Study Bible, Moody Press, 1976, 1978)

Baptism is a witness of salvation, and faith is also a witness of salvation. However, when you are baptized, it is a physical process, the person in question may not have faith, whereas adoption of faith requires loyalty. Hence, you can have a "Christian" who has been baptized yet does not follow God's Word, attend fellowship, etc. but have a true Christian who has never been baptized because the difference is faith. Faith and belief is the deciding factor of salvation. Baptism is only a witness and does not determine salvation.
