You are over-simplifying the matter. There is ONE plan of salvation, but many stages of progressive revelation and of the unfolding of that plan. People in all ages were not saved believing the SAME MESSAGE. They were saved by Christ's retroactive work, and by faith in God's word TO THEM at the time. We are saved today by believing God's word TO US. That would be the gospel of the grace of God, revealed by Paul. Abraham was saved by faith. However, it was not by believing on Christ like we are (Acts 16:31). It was by believing the "GOOD NEWS" (gospel) that God gave to him, that through him, and his seed, all the nations would be blessed (Gen 15). Good works IN THEMSELVES could never save those under the Law. However, faith in God's word to them, would show itself by doing the things required under Law, circumcision, animal sacrifices, Sabbath keeping etc.., while today we show our faith in God's word *TO US* by NOT WORKING (Rom 4:5, Eph 2:8-9 etc). |
