1 | Satan's will or God's will | 2 Tim 2:26 | aquila | 31817
I have always understood this verse to mean that the persons being spoken about were "held captive by Satan to do his (Satan's) will. How can I be sure that the amplified version is accurate in telling me that the persons are escaping "...henceforth to do God's will"?
2 | Satan's will or God's will | 2 Tim 2:26 | Jensen | 31870
Dear aquila..... The NIV has it this way... "and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will." The "who" word is clearly a reference to the "devil" word in the previous phrase. The amplified is wrong. But then again there may be some obscure Greek idiom that I do not know of. But you can not use the ampified for study. But the NASB is good for study :-) God Bless....Jensen |

3 | Satan's will or God's will | 2 Tim 2:26 | Morant61 | 31888
Greetings Jensen! I agree with you on both counts. I too like the NIV's rendering. It is possible: 1) To take both pronouns as references to Satan. 2) To take both pronouns as references to God. 3) To take the first as a reference to Satan, and the the second as a reference to God. However, the context makes more sense with option 1. The reference to being taken captive fits with the trap referred to in the previous clause. That trap was Satan's. 'To do his will' express the purpose or the result of the trap. Thus, it makes more sense that 'his will' refers to the one doing the trapping. Secondly, I agree with you that the Amplified Bible is not the best from which to study. My only problem with it is that is lays out all of the possible meanings of words without consideration of context. A Greek work cannot have every possible meaning in a given context any more than an English word can. I think that it can be misleading at times. But, I haven't used it much, so I could be wrong! :-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
