1 | Which commandment was he talking about? | 1 Tim 6:14 | SomeOtherName | 201825
Very well stated. And, see, try as we might, we can't fulfill the comandments I adopted the omission of the vowel years ago in order to "not offend," and in so doing, I have offended, my appologies. |

Hello, SomeOtherName. You say you dropped the vowel in the word "God" years ago in order not to offend. Out of curiosity I ask, "Offend whom?" In your profile you say you prefer the King James Bible, but you surely are aware that it never refers to our heavenly Father as G-d. Nor does the NASB, which was translated under the aegis of the Lockman Foundation, our hosts of this Forum. This matter regarding the usage of this item, as well as other unconventional terminologies, on SBF has come up before. We most of us who are regulars on the Forum agree that it is of utmost importance to enter posts that are as plain and lucid as we can make them, without esoteric garnish of any kind. To write G-d, therefore, in lieu of God might possibly offend somebody, though I confess that I don't know who it would be or how it would offend. but it is virtually certain, to confuse more readers than it would offend. Since we have no scriptural basis whatever for dropping the "o" in "God" and consequently no cogent reason for doing so, let's adhere to the conventions of standard English usage and write "God" instead of "G-d." Can we make the case that the translators of the KJV, the NASB, and many other respected English translations were being imprudent and offensive by their use of God instead of G-d? I don't think so, do you? You can rest assured that you may use the vowel in the word "God" on this Forum with impunity! --Hank
3 | Which commandment was he talking about? | 1 Tim 6:14 | SomeOtherName | 201849
Question:Out of curiosity I ask, "Offend whom?" Answer: Since about 1996, I posted almost exclusively to Jewish forums or Messianic Jewish forums. I agree, God is not His "name" anyway, but a title. Romans 14:21 It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor any thing whereby thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or is made weak. If my brother was offended by me eating meat, I would refrain in his presence. I imagine that here I'll use the vowels here :) It is now a habit, formed over about 11 years of writing, so forgive me if I omit it accidently here. |

Dear SON, Romans 14 deals with liberty in the context of Christian brothers. It would be a misapplication of this passage relative to the Christian's relationship to unbelievers. In Him, Doc |

Correct, that's why it says "thy brother" I assumed we are all Christian brothers here, as we were on the Messianic boards which I used to post. It is the "brothers" I didn't and don't want to offend, that's why on this board I'll try to do as asked. |

Dear SON, I see... I misunderstood your application. That's what I get for popping on for a quick scan of forum posts! As we walk out Philippians 2:3, offenses will begin to fade. We can put it up with a great deal when we realize that if people knew us as well as God knows us, they could be far, far more correctly hurtful! On the other hand, when we love the truth, we hunger for instruction (Proverbs 9:8). We will understand that Biblical rebuke does not have a disrespectful or negative connotation. It is simply the application of the truth to a present situation, circumstance, or attitude. It has its roots in our love of the God of truth and for His children. More and more we seek to please the Lord in all that occupies our heads, hearts, and hands. Other things fade. Thank you for your efforts to be sensitive and compliant. I am sure I speak for the rest of the forum participants: We look forward to your continued participation. In Him, Doc |
