Greetings Free Thinker! Thanks for your honesty and thoughfulness my friend. This is a very complex series of questions, with my possible perspectives. However, allow me to share my perspective. What was the alternative? God could avoid evil and it's consequences only by removing our ability to make choices. So, the only real alternative to the system in which we currently live is one in which we have no choice whatsoever. Would you prefer that system? I know that I wouldn't. Another possible perspective concerns the relative 'good' or 'evil' of suffering. Most automatically assume that suffering can only be evil. However, most of the great strides that I have personally made in life came as a result of some great suffering which I have had to endure. So, is suffering really all 'evil'? As far as proof goes, you mention Elijah and the fire from Heaven. However, are you aware that many of those who 'believed' on that day, later turned repeatedly back to false idols? Many of those who saw the miracles of Jesus never believed in Him. Why not? Proof isn't all it is made out to be! ;-) You also mentioned that God should do something to prove that He loves you. He did! He died on a cross for your sins! What more must He do? :-) If you would like to discuss this more fully and more personally, I can be reached at Morant62@hotmail.com. Please feel free to contact me my friend. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Thank you for your insight, but it still does not answer the question. Let me see if I can explain. “What was the alternative? God could avoid evil and it's consequences only by removing our ability to make choices.” We could have still had free choices without killing and raping each other. I think anyway. “Most automatically assume that suffering can only be evil.” The same can be said of pain. A throbbing finger because you hit it with the hammer and a chest pain telling you that your heart is in danger are two totally different types of pain. One is annoying and simply reminds you to aim straight while the other is a warning of a more serious problem. My son does not have to suffer to show his love for me, but he must learn to clean his room which he would call suffering. “As far as proof goes, you mention Elijah and the fire from Heaven. However, are you aware that many of those who 'believed' on that day, later turned repeatedly back to false idols?” If god already knew that, why did he waste his time? Maybe for the few that did believe? As far as I have seen, nobody has ever said anything, in my life, like Elijah. i.e. god is going to make this miracle happen right now in front of your eyes. I have heard things like, when something unexpected but good happens, that was a miracle from God, but when something bad happens the rain falls on the just and the unjust. “Many of those who saw the miracles of Jesus never believed in Him.” What has happened in the last 2k years? Have you seen God or Jesus? I know that you are going to say that you have felt him in your heart, or that he has talked to you in some non-physical way. Why has he not been seen in all this time? “Proof isn't all it is made out to be! ;-) You also mentioned that God should do something to prove that He loves you. He did! He died on a cross for your sins! What more must He do? :-)” Is there any proof to this event other than the Bible? “The failure of such a historian as Josephus to mention Jesus tends to make the existence of Jesus at least reasonably doubtful.” Author: Mangasar Magurditch Mangasarian Title: The Truth About Jesus Is He a Myth? If you get a chance, read this book. The first part of this book is a parable that I found very interesting. You can find it at http://gutenberg.net/index.html Thank you for your help in this. I do realize the consequences for me being wrong are much worse than if you are wrong. So I intend to ask as many questions as I can type and read as many books as I can get my hands on. |

Greetings Freethinker! If you figure out a way to teach your son to clean his room, please let me know! :-) Concerning free will, how would you create a world with FREE choice and not allow anyone to choose to do wrong? Concerning Jospehus, all the texts that we actually have of his history do mention Jesus. However, liberal scholars reject them as spurious because they don't want to believe. There are many historical references to both the life and the death of Jesus. Are they real extensive? No!. But, they do exist. Concerning miracles and proof, I have seen amazing and immediate answers to prayer. But, I think you missed my point my friend. Many in the past have seen the kinds of proof that you believe that you need to see, yet they didn't believe in Jesus as a result. If we are determined not to believe in Jesus, no amount of proof will ever be enough. Just look at those who still believe to this day that the earth is flat! ;-) There are evidences which I can point to that indicate the truth of the Bible, the reality of Christ's life and death, the power of prayer. But, if you aren't willing to believe, none of them will make any difference. That is where the faith comes in, not that we are expected to believe in spite of reason, but that we must at some point take the plunge so to speak. You may have heard the old story about the man who was crossing the Niagra Falls on a robe. He asked the crowd if they really believed that he could do it. How about if he were pushing a wheelbarrow? Then he asked, 'Who believes enough to ride in the wheelbarrow?' Faith is simply trusting in God enough to make Him Lord of your life and placing your faith in His promises. There will always be a doubt or a reason not to do so - that's why it is called faith! :-) The best advice I can give you my friend is to pray and ask God to help you believe. I'll be keeping you in my prayers as well. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
